According to Ralph Porter Slaton, John Thomas Slaton and his brother William Moses (Will) Slaton moved to California while young, perhaps 1900/1920. They lived close to the Mexican border in Holtsville, California. John Thomas Slaton stayed in California, but William Moses (Will) Slaton moved to Manchestor, Ohio. The following is from Rebecca Uldrich, granddaughter of John Thomas Slaton: John Thomas Slaton, came to California in about 1905, from Oklahoma. He had gone to Oklahoma to work for his Uncle, Billy Moore. Papa said Grandpa and his uncle both had tempers, which made working together hard. Neighbors (Porter and Stella Ferguson) were moving to California, and asked Grandpa if he would like to come along and help with the stock. So he did. Haskell Free came after that, I think. He might have come at the same time, but I doubt if he came earlier, because the Valley wasn't opened for farming until around 1903. Will Slaton didn't come until about 1920, because they arrived just in time for his son Earl to start first grade with my dad.
