He "disappeared into Missouri" after 1868. Nothing is known of him after that (but see subsequent notes).

from letter to Amelia Martin from Victoria Peters Hoover written 17 June, 1977: Tobias Peters and wife Martha, and son Elija and daughter, Mary (Mollie) lived in Center Valley. They owned a farm. He came from work at noon and called to his wife that he'd be in for lunch. He nor the mules were ever seen or heard of again -- so Martha sold the farm and with Elija and Mary moved in with her parents, Samuel and Charlotte Martin.

The people who bought the farm were burning brush heaps and found a skeleton with Tobias turkey caller, pocket knife, mirror, and pocket dictionary -- so they buried it as Tobias.

When Elija and his wife Virginia were living near Greenwood, an elderly gentleman ask (sic) to spend the night and asked personal questions that irked them. They had 2 children at that time. Several years later they had a letter from a lawyer in Noel, Miss., and he said that their father had died and left Elija and Mollie a considerable sum of money and said to tell them that he was the man who spent the night with them. He had also spent the night with Mollie and her family.

No one believed him, but had no real proof. Tobias had no reason to murder any one -- so it must have been the man's conscience.

From Beckie McElhaney, Feb 2001:

There is a mystery concerning James Peters and Martha Martin. Supposedly he killed someone and disappeared into Missouri. A body was found which may have been James or ?. Anyway, some years later his children received an inheritance supposedly from their father whom they thought was dead. The lawyer brought the inheritance to Greenwood, Arkansas from Noel, Missouri. I have been wondering if the inheritance could have come from another of Martha Martin's family members? There is no record of Martha Martin's death either. It has been said , they met up in Missouri but I have no way of knowing.

James Scarbro (Jim) Peters and Martha Ann Martin were married on 3 September 1868 in Roane County, Tennessee.87

She was buried between 1873 and 1880 in Lone Star Cemetery, Fort Chaffee, Sebastian County, Arkansas. Some researchers list a second marriage to William Washington (Washington) Williams in 1877 in Knox County, Tennessee. But I think it was a different Martha Ann Martin that married Washington Williams. (RGB)
