The 1800 census for Burke County, North Carolina was enumerated in a fashion which seems very unusual. Normally, people are enumerated in house number order in a census so that you can more or less determine who was living close to whom. The first census in which actual house numbers appeared was 1850, but the enumerations in previous census years were still listed in house number order.
However, the 1800 census for Burke County, North Carolina was enumerated in almost an alphabetic order. All the A's are listed, then all the B's, etc., except that within the A's the names are not alphabetized, etc. Such a procedure is very common for tax lists, but not for census enumerations.
I have not checked every county in every state for the 1800 census. But for the ones I have checked, the ones from North Carolina seem to have all been enumerated in this rather peculiar order, and the ones from other states seem to have been enumerated in house number order as usual.
This issue bears further investigation.

I believe that Christian Bortles/Bottles age 26-44 was my fifth great grandfather. Which is to say, I believe that Christian was the grandfather of my third great grandfather Jacob England. Christian's wife was Anna Catherine Anthony age 26-44. The will of Christian Bortles mentioned a grandson named Jacob England. There was no other Jacob England in Burke County at the time. The best current speculation is that Jacob was born out of wedlock, the son of an England woman and a Bortles man, where the Bortles man was the son of Christian Bortles. The family is reported to have been living in the Salem Church area, three miles south of Morganton on Rutherford Road. The unknown female age 00-09 is of great significance to my research. The speculation that Jacob England was the son of a Bortles man and an England woman may be wrong. Jacob may have been the son of an England man and a Bortles woman. If it was the latter, then a daughter of Christian Bortles who was born 1791-1800 would be the best candidate to have been Jacob's mother. The older daughter, Sarah Anthony (Sally) Bortles, married Samuel David Laughridge. So Sally could not have been Jacob's mother. |

I do not recognize this David Cox. There was a David Cox in Wilkes County in 1790, and there wasn't a David Cox in Wilkes County in 1800. So I wonder if the same David Cox was in Wilkes County in 1790 and in Burke County in 1800. |
