Taxpayers for 1862, District 9, Anderson County, Tennessee

District 9 of Anderson County encompassed what would be described today as being more or less the same area as the Scarbrough community. The area is at the southwest corner of Anderson County, being bounded to the east and the south by the Clinch River, to the west by the Roane County line, and to the north by District 8 of Anderson County.

The line between District 8 and District 9 follows the crest of Pine Ridge between the Roane County line (point A) and Scarbrough Road (point B). From there, the line follows Scarbrough Road south to Union Valley Road (point C). From there, the line follows follows Union Valley Road east to the Clinch River (point D). The remainder of the District 9 boundary follows the Clinch River to the Roane County line (point E), and hence follows the Roane County line back to the beginning at point A.

The main entrance to the Y-12 complex is in District 9. If you follow Scarbrough Road north from the Y-12 entrance, you will pass from District 9 into District 8 very quickly. Namely, you will be in District 8 as soon as you pass through the gap in Pine Ridge and arrive in the main business district of Oak Ridge.

My interest in the 1862 tax records for Anderson County, Tennessee in District 9 is focused on three surnames - Cross, England, and Peters.

Cross surname

My interest in the Cross surname in District 9 is that my fourth great grandfather William Cross paid taxes on 35 acres in District 9 in his lifetime. The farm where William resided consisted of 174 acres in District 8. I have been able to identify two land grants and two deeds by which William collectively came into possession of the 174 acres. I have not been able to identify any land grants or deeds by which William came into possession of the 35 acres in District 9. However, we know that he paid taxes on the 35 acres from 1837 until his death in 1844, and we know that his son Alfred Carter Cross paid taxes on the 35 acres thereafter. Therefore, Alfred Carter Cross was paying taxes on 35 acres in District 9 in 1862. Alfred Carter Cross was my third great grandfather. Anderson County tax records prior to 1837 that might provide additional information about William Cross's 35 acres in District 9 are not extant.

The 1862 tax records for District 9 also include two entries for a man named William Cross. This William Cross was not my fourth great grandfather William Cross nor is there a known family connection between the two men named William Cross. The William Cross in the 1862 tax records for District 9 was the son of Brittain Cross and Mary (Polly) Cross. The Brittain Cross family lived primarily in District 6 and the family of my fourth great grandfather William Cross lived primary in Districts 8 and 9. District 6 would usually be described as being the area around the Marlow community. It is unusual to see a man from the Brittain Cross family such as this William Cross own land outside of District 6.

Members of the Brittain Cross family typically were wealthy and were leading citizens of the county. Brittain's son William Cross was a lawyer. As such, he had the wealth to own a great deal of land. In addition, his name often appears in tax records and legal records in association with his representation of a client. In this case, he owned 600 acres in District 9 on his own, and he represented clients who paid taxes on 5 slaves in District 9.

England surname

My interest in the England surname in District 9 is that my third great grandfather John England lived in District 9 of Anderson County until the Civil War. John England left Anderson County sometime after the Civil War and was enumerated in the 1870 census in Fentress County, Tennessee. The other England family member listed in the 1862 tax list for Anderson County in District 9 was John's brother William England.

Peters surname

My interest in the Peters surname in District 9 is that my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters lived in District 9 of Anderson County for the whole time he lived in Anderson County. Thomas was born in 1790 in Greenbrier County, Virginia. The place where he was born is now located in Monroe County, West Virginia. My Peters family moved to what is now the Scarbrough community of Anderson County in 1797. They moved along members of the Scarbrough family and the area therefore became known as the Scarbrough community. The other Peters family member listed in the 1862 tax list for District 9 was Arthur C. Peters. Arthur was Thomas's nephew, having been the son of Thomas's brother Henry Peters Jr. I am descended from both Thomas Peters and Henry Peters Jr. via cousin marriages among their descendants.
