Nimrod S. Underwood was the son of William Underwood and the grandson of George Underwood and Sally Underwood (first cousins who married). As such, he was the second cousin of my third great grandfather William Ramey Underwood. The common ancestors were my sixth great grandparents John Underwood and Margaret Jackman. Nimrod was probably born in Greenville County, South Carolina. The family moved to Sevier County, Tennessee where my two direct lines of Underwoods lived. Nimrod's father William was called to serve in the War of 1812 from Sevier County, and Nimrod served in his place. After the war, the family moved to Alabama. |

I believe that this was Joel Cross, son of Capt. William Cross and Susannah (Sookie) Lane, and the grandson of Zachariah Cross and Elizabeth Ann Dimmit. If so, then this Joel Cross was the first cousin once removed of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. |
