Joseph Haskel (Haskel) Free married first Rebecca Slaton of Jefferson County, Tennessee, daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore. Rebecca Slaton was the niece of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton. Rebecca died in 1902. Haskel then "went west", leaving his two surviving children Eva and Ollie Free to be raised by their grandparents Frank and Mary Moore. Two of Haskel Free's brothers-in-law, John Thomas Slaton and William Moses (Will) Slaton also "went west" and ended up in Holtsville, California. There must have been a connection between John and Will Slaton moving to California, and Haskel Free moving to California, but I am not sure what the connection might have been. |
