They owned the house and it was mortgaged.

John Franklin Cox was the brother of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox.  His wife was Mary Jane Slaton.

Uncle John was the son of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols.

Aunt Mary was the daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore.   As such, Aunt Mary was the niece of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.

Mildred was Mildred Frances Cox who married Lloyd Miller.  Hazel was Hazel Loretta Cox.  She never married.  Anna was Anna Laura Cox.  She died in 1923.  Dorthy was Dorothy Gladys (Dot) Cox who married (1) Conley (Con) Caton and married (2) Lynn Blackburn.  Marian was George Marion (Little George) Cox.  He died in 1924.  Mary Slaton was Mary Ann Moore, widow of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton.  As the census entry suggests, Frank Slaton was born in North Carolina, either Stokes or Polk County.  Frank Slaton was the brother of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton, so I am related to both the Cox and the Slaton sides of this family.

       Ray 1 son m s w TN NC TN

Sarah Francis (Sallie) Slaton was the daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore.  Her birth places should be listed as TN NC TN because Frank Slaton was born in North Carolina.  Sallie's husband was Wiley Porter Slaton Sr.

The name of the oldest son was a difficult transcription, and I am sure I don't have it quite right.  His name was listed as Francis T. Ingle in the 1930 census, so his middle name must have been some variation on "Treunlyaw" which I have not yet been able to discern.  The son Wiley P. was Wiley Porter Ingle Jr.

Sallie and Wiley were married about 1910, but I have not been able to find their marriage record.  The fact that their first two children were born in Florida may be a clue, because it may indicate that they were married in Florida.

Silas Amberson Bryan was the son of my second great grandparents William Allen (Will) Bryan and Melissa E. Underwood.  As such, Uncle Silas was the brother of my great grandfather William Harley (Harley) Bryan.

Amanda Melzina (Mandy) Slaton was the daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore.  As such, Mandy was the niece of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.

Aunt Mandy was the sister of Mary Slaton who married Uncle John Cox (dwelling number 213 above).  Mae was Stella Mae Bryan who married John F. Worthington.  Jessie was in fact a son Jesse P. Bryan who married Helen Wright.  Fred was Fred R. Bryan who married Mary Sue Odom.  George was George Lee Bryan who married Ruth Morie.

Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison was my great grandmother.  My great grandfather William Harley (Harley) Bryan had died in 1915.  Harley Bryan was from Sevier County, and he died in Sevier County.  Nannie apparently moved from Sevier County to Jefferson County between 1915 to 1920, and was living next door to Harley's brother Silas.

Emmert Oral Bryan was my grandfather.  He was married in 1921 to my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox.

I have wondered how Emmert and Ruby met, given that he was from Sevier County and she was from Jefferson County.  But it is clear from this census entry that Emmert's family had moved to Jefferson County between 1915 and 1920.  Also, Ruby's brother John Cox was living nearby (dwelling number 213).  Furthermore, Emmert would have had reason to visit the John Cox household because John's wife was Mary Jane Slaton, and Mary was Emmert's first cousin once removed.  My father refers to John as "Uncle John Cox" and to Mary as "Aunt Mary".

Edna Omage Bryan (Aunt Edna) married Lon Harrison Williams.  Willie Josephine Bryan (Aunt Bill) married Frank Kyle.  The third sister, Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan married Robert Elmer (Elmer) Cox in 1919 and therefore was not enumerated with the family in 1920.

Haskell Ray Bolden age 13 later married Eula Mae Slaton.  Eula was the daughter of Joseph Porter (Port) Slaton and Minnie Ann Cox.  Port and Minnie were known to my father as Uncle Port and Aunt Minnie.

Minnie Ann Cox was the daughter of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols.  As such, Minnie was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox.

Port Slaton was the son of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore.  As such, he was the nephew of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.

          Presley G. 30 son m s w laborer TN NC NC

They owned the house and it was free of mortgage.

My second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton age 73 was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.  In 1920, she was the widow of my second great grandfather Joseph Harrison.

Also, Susan was the mother of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison from dwelling number 217.  So Nannie Harrison Bryan may have moved from Sevier County to Jefferson County after her husband died to be close to her husband's brother Silas Bryan, but she also may have moved from Sevier County to Jefferson County to be close to her mother.

Alex age 36 was William Alexander (Alex) Harrison.  Uncle Alex never married.  Presley George Harrison (Uncle Press) age 30 married Ruth Morie/Marie on 15 Jan 1920, the day after the census was taken.

Reba Schrader age 18 married Harley T. Nichols on 10 Feb 1923 in Roane County.  I do not know why they were married in Roane County.  All their other records are for Jefferson County.

Harley T. Nichols was the son of Franklin Wesley (Frank) Nichols and Cora M. Corbett, and the grandson of my second great grandparents John H. B. Nichols and Martha P. Reneau.  As such, Frank was the brother of my great grandmother Clarissa Loretta (Retta or Rett) Nichols, and Harley was the first cousin of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox.

Reba was the daughter of James H. Schrader age 44 and Mary Hall age 40.  Mary Jane Fox age 68 was James' mother.

Ruby Priscilla Cox was my grandmother.  Ruby married my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan on 4 April 1921, not too long after this census was taken.

My father was named after Uncle Robert (age 9 in this census), and you might say I was too since I was named after my father.  Uncle Robert's full name was Robert McKinley Cox.  I don't know where the "McKinley" came from exactly, but it must have been from the Nichols family.  Rett had a nephew named Wyatt McKinley Nichols who was known as Mac.  I would suspect that the cousins Robert McKinley Cox and Wyatt McKinley Nichols both got their middle names from the same source.

It's also worth mentioning that I cannot find this family in the 1910 census.  I have looked thoroughly in the Jefferson County census for 1910 and in the statewide Soundex for 1910.  Perhaps they were missed because they were moving during the census.  My grandmother died in 1925 (very young), so this is the only census in which she appeared.  Uncle Robert died in 1930 but before the 1930 census was taken, so this is also the only census in which he appeared.

This was (in part) the family of Harvey L. Breeden who married Lula Templin.  Georgie was Harvey's sister, Gilbert was Harvey's brother, and Martha was Harvey's mother.  Gilbert's name should have been listed as Gilbert Breeden rather than as Gilbert Hughes.  Jim Hughes presumably was the son of Frank Hughes from a previous marriage.  I do not know who Rhue was.  If he was the son of Frank Hughes and Georgie Breeden, then he should have been listed as a son rather than as a stepson.  Indeed, Gilbert Breeden himself was the brother-in-law of Frank Hughes, not strictly speaking a stepson.

Lula Templin was the daughter of John Templin and Emma Ella Cox.  Emma was the daughter of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce.  As such, Emma was the sister of my great grandfather George Jackson Cox.

Bernice was the daughter John H. Brown age 24 and Bertie Solomon age 23.  Because Bernice and her parents were enumerated in the household of her grandfather William O. Brown, she should have been listed as a granddaughter rather than as a daughter.

James Allen (Allen) Underwood age 14 later married Lela Mae Williamson.  Aunt Lela was the sister of my grandmother Lola Ethel Williamson.

Uncle Allen's parents were James Harvey Underwood and Sarah Catherine (Catherine) Hickman.

The Underwood family in East Tennessee was founded by four Underwood brothers, three of whom settled in Sevier County and one of whom settled in Anderson County.  I am descended from John and Thomas of Sevier County.  Uncle Allen was descended from George of Sevier County.  But because Uncle Allen married into the family, I have Underwood second cousins who are second cousins as Williamsons, but who are really only sixth cousins once removed as Underwoods.

Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan age 17 was the daughter of my great grandparents William Harley (Harley) Bryan and Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison.  As such, Aunt Ethel was the sister of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan who married Ruby Priscilla Cox.

Aunt Ethel and Uncle Elmer were married on 10 Aug 1919 in Jefferson County.  They were very young, and they ran off to get married.  They tried to keep it a secret, but after a few days people figured it out.  At that point, people gave them what we would now call a wedding shower, providing them with a few of the necessities to set up a home - chickens, pots, pans, dishes, etc.

Ruby Cox died shortly after my father was born.  Aunt Ethel and Uncle Elmer then raised my father for several years until my grandfather remarried.  My siblings and I always treated Aunt Ethel and Uncle Elmer as a third set of grandparents, and they were known to us as Mamaw and Papaw Cox.  All my other Bryan cousins called them Aunt Ethel and Uncle Elmer.

Maude was the daughter of Martin W. Acton and Hettie E.

Alger Acton was living with Lee Rimmer and Maude Acton in the 1930 census, and was listed as the stepson of Lee Rimmer.  I have been assuming that meant that Alger was Maude's son, perhaps her illegitimate son.  But I also wonder if perhaps Alger was really Maude's nephew.

The enumerator did not get this entry quite right.  Sarah Louisa Ida (Ida) McAndrew age 47 was the widow of Robert Russell Wyatt Nichols.  Robert was the son of my second great grandparents John H. Nichols and Martha P. Reneau.  As such, Robert was the brother of my great grandmother Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols.

Ida was the daughter of Joseph Calloway McAndrew and Louisa Fox.  Joseph Calloway McAndrew died in 1884 and Louisa Fox age 87 was correctly enumerated as Louise McAndrew, the widowed mother of Sarah Louisa Ida (Ida) McAndrew.  The accuracy of the census entry all goes downhill from there.  The surnames and family relationships are scrambled up.

Hannah Rebecca Dandridge McAndrew age 54 was the sister of Sarah Louisa Ida (Ida) McAndrew, and in 1920 Hannah was the widow of Murphy Milas Rainwater.  Joseph Bertie (Bertie) Rainwater age 33 and Lillie Mae Rainwater age 31 were Hannah's children.  Daisy Mae Nichols age 18 was Ida's daughter.
