Piney Langley age 7 married Jacob Benton Cross in 1883. Piney's given name was spelled numerous ways, including Pena, Peona, and Poeny. She was named for her grandmother Philopena Shoffner. Piney's full given name may well have been Philopena like her grandmother. This census entry suggests that Piney was the daughter of Isaac Langley and Philopena (Pena) Shoffner. However, I believe that Piney was born out of wedlock and was the daughter of Rebecca Langley. Therefore, Isaac Langley and Pena Shoffner were Piney's grandparents. Piney was raised by Isaac and Pena in any case. Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Franklin W. (Frank) Cross and Virginia Florence Laymance. As such, Jacob was the great grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War Drummer boy. Jacob's line was William -> Elijah -> Franklin W. (Frank) -> Jacob. |
