I am looking for an Elkanah Cross that might have been the son of William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. This Elkanah doesn't appear to be the one. This Elkanah was born in Virginia. If William the drummer boy had a son named Elkanah, then William's Elkanah would have been born in Tennessee. I can't explained why the census enumerator so badly mangled Elkanah's given name, but I believe that the above transcription is fairly accurate. Elkanah's wife was Mary Margaret Hawkins. They were married in 1854 in Ralls County, Missouri. Mary Margaret's parents were James L. Hawkins and Orpha Packwood. Mary Mararet's sister was Ailey Judith (Judith) Hawkins. The birth places for Orpha and Judith were reversed in this census entry, with Orpha having been born in Virginia and Judith having been born in Missouri. |
