John Emerson Pierce age 41 was the son of Allen Newton (Newt) Pierce and Sarah Ann Brown age 64. Newt Pierce died in 1902. Sarah Ann Brown was the daughter of John Brown and Sarah Hendry. Allen Newton (Newt) Pierce was the son of my third great grandfather James E. Pierce and the half-brother of my second great grandmother Nancy Ann Pierce. Newt's mother was James' third wife Experience (Spriddy) Wells, and Nancy Ann's mother was James' first wife Anny Green who was my third great grandmother. Newt Pierce and Sarah Ann Brown were married in Greene County, Tennessee and the family was enumerated in the 1880 census in Greene County, Tennessee. The 1880 census entry for the family has John Emerson Pierce listed as age 1 born in Tennessee, and it seems extremely likely that he was born in Tennessee rather than Missouri. I can't speak as to the correctness of the birth places for his brothers Curtis age 28 and Homer age 21 because I don't know exactly when the family removed from Tennessee to Missouri. The 1880 Greene County, Tennessee census has Sarah Ann Brown and her parents listed as born in Tennessee. It seems much more likely to me that Sarah herself was born in Tennessee than in Ohio as indicated by the 1920 census. |
