Frederick Bortles was the son of Christian Bortles and Anna Catherine Anthony. Christian Bortles and Anna Catherine Anthony were probably my fifth great grandparents because Christian listed Jacob England as his grandson in his will, and a Jacob England of Burke County, North Carolina was my third great grandfather. That raises the interesting possibility that Frederick Bortles was my fourth great grandfather. There were no England-Bortles marriages in Burke County. There was a bastardy bond in 1827 for Rachel England. So perhaps Frederick Bortles was Jacob England's father and Rachel England was Jacob's mother. |

This Joseph England is a possible ancestor of my third great grandfather Jacob England of Burke County, North Carolina. Also, a Joseph England of Burke County, North Carolina served in the Revolutionary War and moved to Anderson County, Tennessee about 1827. So this Joseph couldn't have been the Joseph who was in Anderson County in 1830. |

Sarah Smith was probably the mother of Mary Smith who was living next door. I guessing that Sarah's age was closer to 40 than to 30. It seems very strange to list a woman as head of household when there was a man about the same age living in the home. Perhaps the man was a boarder. |

Mary Smith may have been related to my third great grandmother Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith. Isaac Franklin may have been related to Henry Franklin. On 4 Dec 1862 Jacob England and his wife Dicey Ann of Burke County released for $55 to Louis Franklin their rights in 182 acres on a branch of long creek of the south fork, joining Walker's old line, referring to a deed from C W Dickson to Henry Franklin on 25 October 1848 "as a part hereof" (I:353, witnessed by W W Aacry; re-recorded on 11 December 1882). This deed is surrounded by several other releases made by heirs of Henry Franklin. The 1860 census of Burke County showed Henry Franklin, aged 49, without children. It thus appeared likely that Dicy Smith was a niece and heir, although no estate papers survive for Henry Franklin. |

It is very likely that Christian Bortles was my fifth great grandfather. According to his will, he had a grandson named Jacob England. My third great grandfather of Burke County, North Carolina was Jacob England. I have found no other Jacob England in Burke County, and the ages work out so that Christian Bortles' grandson could have been my Jacob England. At the present time, it seems more likely that Jacob was born out wedlock, the son of an England woman and a Bortles man than that he was the legitimate son of an England man and a Bortles woman. |
