William George Washington Green age 53 was the first husband of my great grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray. They were married 7 Apr 1889 in Loudon County, Tennessee and they were divorced 9 Jan 1896, also in Loudon County. William married Cennie L. Hipps age 36 on 1 Aug 1913 in Haywood County, North Carolina. Cennie was the daughter of John Montraville Hipps and Mary Adeline Woody. William and Cennie appear to have lived in Haywood County from the time of their marriage at least until the 1920 census, and their first three children likely were born in Haywood County. The nephew William Swan (Swan) Blankenship age 24 was the son of Cennie's sister Mary Lucinda Hipps and Mary's husband John Quincy Blankenship. I have found no records for William George Washington Green between his 1896 divorce from Haley Bray and his 1913 marriage to Cennie Hipps. His given name appears in records variously as W. G. W. and as William and as William G. and as George W. It is only a guess that his full name was William George Washington Green. But it seems very likely that his last initial of W. actually did stand for Washington. |
