1800 Census, Wilkes County, North Carolina

The 1800 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina was enumerated in a fashion which seems very unusual.  Normally, people are enumerated in house number order in a census so that you can more or less determine who was living close to whom.  The first census in which actual house numbers appeared was 1850, but the enumerations in previous census years were still listed in house number order.

However, the 1800 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina was enumerated in almost an alphabetic order.  All the A's are listed, then all the B's, etc., except that within the A's the names are not alphabetized, etc.

I have not checked every county in every state for the 1800 census.  But for the ones I have checked, the ones from North Carolina seem to have all been enumerated in this rather peculiar order, and the ones from other states seem to have been enumerated in house number order as usual.

This issue bears further investigation.

Braxton Cox appears to have been the son of Matthew Cox and Lucy Dickerson.  Aris Cox, apparently the brother of this Braxton Cox, was enumerated in the 1790 census in Wilkes County, North Carolina.  Braxton Cox and Nancy Allison were married in Wilkes County, North Carolina 22 Oct 1798.  The daughter would have been an infant in 1800, and I don't know what her name was.

Matthew Cox and Lucy Dickerson were apparently the parents of Braxton Cox who appeared on p.32 of the 1800 Wilkes County, North Carolina census.  They were also apparently the parents of Aris Cox who appeared on p.179 of the 1790 Wilkes County, North Carolina census.
