My first theory was that this Joseph C. Cross age 50-59 was the son of Henry Cross, and that Joseph C. Cross and Brittain Cross were brothers. Henry Cross was the only Cross in the 1778 Washington County, Tennessee (then North Carolina) tax list. In 1778, the Washington County tax list effectively encompassed the entirety of what is now the state of Tennessee. Brittain Cross and Joseph Cross were married within three years of each other in Jefferson County -- Brittain in 1800 and Joseph in 1803. Henry and Brittain were enumerated in the 1805 tax list for Greene County. Snyder Roberts states that Brittain Cross had a brother named Joseph who married a Hoskins. I do not know what his evidence was. Perhaps it was only that they were both in Jefferson County at the same time, and were married within three years of each other, facts of which I also make note. Snyder Roberts further states that Joseph Cross, the Hoskins, and the Parks moved from Jefferson County to Anderson County shortly after Anderson County was formed in 1801. Brittain Cross married Mary (Polly) Parks. However, the Joseph C. Cross from this census entry was in Jefferson County at the time of the 1830 census, and Brittain Cross was in Anderson County at the time of the 1830 census. There are additional complications.

William Cate age 20-29 was the son of Samuel Cate and Barbara Wilhite. As such, he was the double first cousin of my third great grandmother Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate who married my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan. |

Joseph Burchfiel age 40-49 was my fifth great grandfather. His first wife Susanah Holloway was my fifth great grandmother. Susanah died 4 Dec 1829, and so was not enumerated in the 1830 census. Instead, Joseph's second wife Rachel Harriet Russell age 20-29 was enumerated in the 1830 census. She and Joseph were married 29 Dec 1829, less than a month after Susanah died. My fourth great grandfather Robert (Bobby) Burchfiel was the oldest son and married in 1827, so he was not enumerated with his parents in 1830. |

Robert (Bobby) Burchfiel age 20-29 and Anna Evalista Malcom age 20-29 were my fourth great grandparents. Bobby was the son of Joseph Burchfiel and Susan Holloway (see p.331 above). Anna was the daughter of George Malcom and Dinah Gragg. My third great grandmother Leona (Senie) Burchfiel was born in 1833, and so did not appear until the 1840 census. |
