The parents in this family were Erasmus (Rasmus) Harvey Cline and Julia Emily (Emily) Gass. Emily Gass was the daughter of John Gass and Anna Cox. I have no expectation that Anna Cox was a member of my Cox family from Jefferson County. My interest in the family is that Rasmus and Emily were the parents of Mary Ella (Ella) Cline and Ola Maud Cline. Ella Cline who was age 2 in this census later married William Nelson Cox. Ola Maud Cline was not born until 1878, and she married James Harmon Cox. I believe that Ola Maud Cline was a "two first name" person, always known as "Ola Maud". William Nelson Cox and James Harmon Cox in turn were brothers, sons of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce. As such, they were brothers of my great grandfather George Jackson Cox. James Harmon Cox and Ola Maud Cline are of special interest to me because they were the parents of Robert Elmer (Elmer) Cox. Elmer married Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan, who was the sister of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan. Emmert married my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox. Elmer and Ethel were the first cousin and sister-in-law, respectively, of Ruby Cox. Elmer and Ethel were generally known in the family as Uncle Elmer and Aunt Ethel. However, they were known to me as a third set of grandparents. That's because Ruby died shortly after my father was born, and Elmer and Ethel raised my father until my grandfather remarried. |

Thomas Fielden Slaton born on 1 Mar 1818 in Virginia (probably Pittsylvania County). Rebecca Frances George born on 7 Mar 1816 in North Carolina (probably Stokes County). Pittsylvania County and Stokes County were adjacent, and they were married in Stokes County. They were my third great grandparents. My second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton age 23 was born on 31 July 1846 in Stokes County, North Carolina. She later married my second great grandfather Joseph Harrison. Thomas Fielden Slaton was the son of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. The parents of Rebecca Frances George are not known, but research has focused on Presley George Sr. and Mary Cook as her most likely parents. |

Mary Elizabeth Bell was the daughter of Uriah Bell and Margaret Hays. She married (1) Joseph F. Slaton. Joseph F. Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. As such, Joseph was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. Martha B. and Leah S. were the children of Joseph F. Slaton, except that I think that Martha B. was the same person who was later known as Mahala Slaton. I do not know if S was Leah's middle initial, or if she was being listed as Leah Slaton Sherbett in 1870. In any case, her marriage record lists her name as Leah Slaton. Mary Elizabeth Bell married (2) Aaron M. Shurbutt. Aaron M. Shurbutt's parents are not known. William Slaton Shurbutt age 3/12 was the son of Aaron M. Shurbutt and Mary Elizabeth Bell. William's middle name came from Mary's first husband Joseph F. Slaton, or equivalently was Mary's surname at the time she married Aaron M. Shurbutt. |

Wilcher Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. As such, he was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. Notwithstanding what the census says, I believe Wilcher was born in Virginia. His wife was Penelope C. France, but I do not know who her parents were. Wilcher and Penelope were married about 1866. Rebecca was Wilcher's daughter with his first wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Linville. Martha E. Slaton was the daughter of Wilcher and Penelope. |

Leana (Senie) Burchfiel age 37 was my third great grandmother. She married first my third great grandfather Isaac Wesley (Wesley) Reneau. Wesley died in 1859, and Senie married second Christopher C. However, the enumerator listed them all with the surname Miller. William and Lucia were the children of Christopher and Senie. Martha P. Reneau age 18 was my second great grandmother. She married my second great grandfather John H. Nichols in 1871. Margaret Abigail Reneau age 14 was Martha's sister. Sarah Miller and Jacob M. Miller were the children of Christopher C. John H. Nichols age 20 was my second great grandfather. He was living in the home of his uncle Wyatt F. Nichols. John H. Nichols age 16 was my second great grandfather's first cousin. The fact that the two first cousins had the same name has been the source of some confusion in researching the family. Wyatt F. Nichols was the son of my fourth great grandparents John J. Nichols III and Margaret (Peggy) Scantling. As such, Wyatt was the brother of my third great grandmother Sarah F. (Sally) Nichols. Sally had three children with a Mr. Catlett, but after a Catlett/Nichols feud and a Catlett/Nichols lawsuit, Sally's children ended up with the Nichols surname rather than the Catlett surname. Hence, my second great grandfather was named John H. Nichols rather than John H. Catlett. Wyatt's wife was Maroda (Rhoda) Hill. |

Solomon and Hannah were married in Rockingham County, Virginia in 1831 and had moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee by the time of the 1840 census. The Harrisons were also from Rockingham County, Virginia. The family moved to Greene County, Tennessee about 1857/1858. I do not know exactly when Joseph and Mary moved from Greene County to Jefferson County, but it was after the 1860 census. |
