This particular census entry has proven very important in deciphering some Slaton family history in Jefferson County, but some explanation and interpretation is required. This was Aaron M. Shurbutt's second (or more) marriage. There is no firm indication of when and why he arrived in Jefferson County from South Carolina. He was apparently married the second time in about 1868 or 1869, but no record of this marriage has been found in Jefferson County, Sevier County, or Knox County (the three most likely candidate counties where he might have been married). Aaron's second wife was Mary Elizabeth Bell. At the time of her marriage to Aaron M. Shurbutt, Mary was the widow of Joseph F. Slaton. However, neither a record of Joseph's death nor of a divorce between him and Mary has been found. It seems much more likely that Mary was widowed than divorced. Joseph F. Slaton and Mary Elizabeth Bell had daughters Mahala B. Slaton and Leah Slaton. Mahala was enumerated with her mother and stepfather in 1880 as M. B. Shurbutt age 18, but all subsequent records indicate that her surname was Slaton. It seems unlikely that Mahala changed her name to Shurbutt, and it seems more likely that the census enumerator just did a sloppy job with Mahala's surname. Leah Slaton was married in 1879, so she was enumerated with her first husband Andrew J. (Andy) Williams in the 1880 census. Aaron M. Shurbutt and Mary Elizabeth Bell had children William Slaton Shurbutt, Mary B. Shurbutt, and Maggie A. Shurbutt. The ages of William and Mary appear to be reversed in this census entry. It is known that William was born in 1870 and was enumerated as an infant in the 1870 census, and that Mary was not enumerated in the 1870 census. William's 1880 census entry looks more like W. F. Shurbutt than W. S. Shurbutt. But there is ample evidence that his middle name was Slaton. Given that F's and S's often are written very similarly in old handwriting, I have chosen to transcribe the name as W. S. Shurbutt. Mary's 1880 census entry looks about as much like W. B. Shurbutt as it does like M. B. Shurbutt. But given that M's and W's are often written very similarly in old handwriting, given that there is a Jefferson County marriage record for Mary B. Shurbutt to G.F. Thomas, and given that later census entries for Mary B. Shurbutt Thomas show her age to be correct and her father's birth place of South Carolina to be correct, I have chosen to transcribe M/W B. Shurbutt in 1880 as M. B. Shurbutt. All the post-1880 census entries I have found for the children of Aaron M. Shurbutt and Mary Elizabeth Bell indicate that their father was born in South Carolina. But curiously, the 1880 enumerator got it wrong. He listed birth places for W. S., M. B., and W. A. Shurbutt as TN TN TN when in fact they should have been listed as TN SC TN. |

Martha Nichols age 28 was my second great grandmother Martha P. Reneau who married my second great grandfather John H. B. Nichols. At the time of the 1880 census, they were separated and possibly already divorced, although the census lists Martha as still married. I do not know the exact date of the divorce. Loretta, Robert W. and Franklin were Martha's children. John H. B. Nichols lived in Missouri for thirty-three years. He was probably already in Missouri by 1880. Frank's age of 1 year old is a little bit of a puzzle. I have his birth date listed as 1874, but it might have been closer to 1879. His age bears on the question of when John H. B. Nichols moved to Missouri. Martha and the children also moved to Missouri, but they returned to Tennessee when the Missouri weather made Martha and Loretta ill. It appears that their time in Missouri was previous to 1880. Loretta was my great grandmother Clarissa Loretta Nichols who was known as Retta or Rett. She married George Jackson Cox and was known to my father as Grandma Cox. George Jackson Cox was the son of John Tivis Cox. In one of the strangest stories you will ever hear, John Tivis Cox was a widower in 1880 and he married Martha P. Reneau Nichols in 1882, two years after this census. Rett Nichols then married her stepbrother George Jackson Cox in 1883, three years after this census when she was 12 years old. The head of the household was Thomas J. Brimer age 60 and his wife was Sarah Louise Reneau age 56. Sarah was Martha P. Reneau's aunt. The references to Loretta, Robert W., and Franklin as nieces and nephews really should be as grandnieces and grandnephews of Sarah L. Reneau Brimer. |

Senie's children with Wesley Reneau were all adults and had all moved out of the home by the time of the 1880 census, including my second great grandmother Martha P. Reneau. William age 14 and Lucy age 12 were children of Christopher and Senie. Lucy was listed incorrectly as a granddaughter. She was in fact a daughter. It contains a great deal of the history of my Nichols family, plus a good bit of history some of my families that married into the Nichols family, including Bryan and Cox. Mac Nichols reported that his mother Ida McAndrew was referred to as Aunt Ida by most family members outside of his immediate family. In addition, Mac referred to my great grandmother Rett Nichols as Aunt Rett. Ida was the daughter of Joseph Calloway McAndrew age 43 and Louisa Fox age 47. Williams was the brother of Isabella Williams who was Edmon Bell's first wife. William Bell is a bit of a puzzle. I don't know who his parents were. John C. Bell 1843-1869 is a good candidate for his father. The other possibilities are Charles P. Bell about 1835 and Ezekial A. Bell about 1845. |

Andrew J. Williams and Leah Slaton married shortly before the 1880 census. Her name probably should be transcribed as Le?. Some transcribers have it as Lev and others as Ler, but really it is L-E-squibble. Leah Slaton was the daughter of Joseph F. Slaton and Mary Elizabeth Bell. Joseph F. Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. As such, Joseph was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton. |

Mary age 59 was Mary Ann Slaton, widow of Floyd Hart. I believe Mary Ann was the daughter of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. The birth places for Joseph are inconsistent with the rest of the family (how could Joseph's parents be born in Tennessee and the parents of his sisters be born in Virginia?) and must be in error. Ignoring that glitch, the birth place of Mary and her children is consistent with the William Slaydon family. Also, William Slaydon himself is enumerated on the very next page of the Jefferson County, Tennessee census. There are letters between Leah Hart from this census entry on the on hand, and Leah Slaton on the other hand, in which the two Leahs identify each other as cousins. The common grandparents were apparently William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. However, it has been difficult to find proof of this theory. In the case of Leah Hart, it has been difficult to find proof that her mother Mary Ann Slaton was the daughter of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. In the case of Leah Slaton, it has been difficult to determine who her parents were. The most likely possibility is that Leah Slaton was the daughter of Joseph F. Slaton and Elizabeth Bell. Joseph F. Slaton in turn is known to have been the son of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. Leah Hart and her cousin Leah Slaton were most likely both named for their aunt, Leah Slaton, daughter of William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin. |

William Slaydon was my fourth great grandfather. He was the father of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton and several other Jefferson County Slatons. Thomas Fielden Slaton was the first Slaton to move into Jefferson County. But his father and several brothers and sisters followed thereafter. William Slaydon's wife Susannah Flippin died between 1860 and 1870. F. was probably William Slaydon's daughter Emily/Elinor F. Slaydon. Mahaley was William Slaydon's daughter Mahala B. Slaydon. |

It's hard to be certain because of the initials instead of names, but I believe this is James B. Wells and his wife Clarissa Catlett, with Clarissa being the daughter of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday. The 1850 Blount County census entry for the family says that James B. Wells was born in North Carolina, but the birth place for J.B. Wells in this census entry could well be incorrect (birth places often are incorrect in the census). Clarissa Catlett was the brother of William Catlett. It is not yet proven, but I believe that William Catlett was the consort of my third great grandmother Sarah F. (Sallie) Nichols, and hence I believe he was my third great grandfather. |

Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George were my third great grandparents. Thomas Fielden Slaton was born 1 Mar 1818 in Virginia. Rebecca Frances George born 7 Mar 1816 in North Carolina. They were married on 14 Feb 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina. I do not recognize James Elison, nor do I know whether he was a really hired hand or if he was a family member. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses all say that Thomas was born in Virginia. So, too, does the death certificate for Thomas's daughter Susan Slaton. So, too, does the 1880 census entry for Susan Slaton (see below). I think the correct birth places in his census entry should be VA VA NC, because both he and his father was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. |
