My great grandfather George Jackson Cox was the son of John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce.

My great grandmother Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols was the daughter of John H. Nichols and Martha P. Reneau.

My grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox was born in 1903, so she was first enumerated in the 1910 census.  The two children who had died prior to the 1900 census were Thursa (Thursie) Cox born 24 Nov 1887 died 8 Jan 1888, and Martha Cox born 23 Apr 1896 died 8 Dec 1898.

William Slaton Shurbutt was the son of Aaron M. Shurbutt and Mary Elizabeth Bell.  Mary Elizabeth Bell married first Joseph Flippin Slaton.  So William Slaton Shurbutt was the half brother of Mahala Slaton and Leah Slaton.

Joseph Flippin Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin.  As such, he was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.

I haven't yet figured out who Amanda was.  She evidently had married a Mr. Manning about 1885.

Joseph Martin Hart was the son of Floyd Hart and Mary Ann Slaton.  As such, Joseph was the nephew of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  I think Joseph's birth place is incorrect in that he and his parents were all born in North Carolina.

Leah Waren Hart was the daughter of Floyd Hart and Mary Ann Slaton.  As such, Leah was the niece of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  Leah Waren Hart was very important to solving some Slaton family mysteries because she and Leah Slaton exchanged letters where they described each other as "cousin".  It turns out that both of them were granddaughters of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin.

My second great grandmother Martha P. Reneau age 48 was the daughter of Isaac Wesley (Wesley) Reneau and Leana (Senie) Burchfiel age 67.  I am descended from Martha and her first husband John H. B. Nichols.

John and Martha were married after the death of Nancy Ann Pierce and after Martha's divorce from John H. B. Nichols.  Then, John's son George Jackson Cox married Martha's daughter Clarissa Loretta (Rett or Retta) NicholsGeorge and Rett were my great grandparents.

Joseph Harrison age 60 and Susan A. Slaton age 53 were my second great grandparents.

Joseph was the son of Daniel Harrison and Rhoda Maria Brown.

Susan was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.

The child who died before 1900 was Mary Frances Harrison 22 Aug 1873 - 4 Jul 1894.  Rhoda Rebecca (Becky) Harrison and Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison were married before 1900 and therefore were not enumerated with their parents in this census entry.  Nannie was my great grandmother.  The other child not enumerated with the family was Thomas Slaton Harrison.  Thomas was born 1 Nov 1881 and married 21 Feb 1913.  He was enumerated in the home of his uncle William P. Slaton in 1900.

Names in this family are good clues to previous generations.  Thomas Slaton Harrison was named for his grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.  The name of the youngest son, Presley George (Press) Harrison, suggests that Rebecca Frances George's father was Presley George.

Wyatt F. Nichols age 71 was the son of my fourth great grandparents John J. Nichols III and Margaret (Peggy) Scantling.  As such, Wyatt was the brother of my third great grandmother Sarah F. (Sally) Nichols.

Wyatt's wife was Maroda (Rhody) Hill age 66.  They were probably married in Sevier County about 1853, in which case their marriage record would have been destroyed in the courthouse fire in 1856.  I have not identified Rhody's parents.  In the 1850 census, she was living in the household of Jesse Hill.  Jesse was six years older than Rhody, and was probably her older brother.

Henry Houston Ailey age 19 was the father of Arville Randolph Ailey who was born 10 Jan 1911 in Jefferson County. Arville married Alma Gertrude Slaton on 17 Feb 1929 in Jefferson County. I cannot explain why Henry's middle initial was listed as E.

Alma was the daughter of Joseph Porter (Port) Slaton and Minnie Ann Cox.

Port Slaton was the son Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and the grandson of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton. As such, Frank Slaton was the brother of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton, Port Slaton was the first cousin of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison, and Alma Slaton was the second cousin of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan.

Minnie Cox was the daughter my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols. As such, Minnie was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox and Alma was the first cousin of my father Robert Elmer (Bob) Bryan.

William F. Bryan was the son of Thomas C. Bryan Jr.  Thomas C. Bryan Jr. was the son of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and the brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Part of the evidence that William F. Bryan was the son of Thomas C. Bryan Jr. is that there was a Hamblen County death certificate in 1916 for W. F. Bryan, son of Thomas Bryan and unknown.  William's mother was in fact Salina Adeline (Adeline) Huffaker.

William's wife was Mary (Mollie) Elder, daughter of John Underwood Elder and Sarah Mount.

Rebecca Slaton age 30 was the daughter of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Ann Moore.  As such, she was the niece of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.  Rebecca's husband was Joseph Haskel (Haskel) Free.

The census indicates that Rebecca had borne a child that had died.  There is a Slaton family photograph which was taken on the occasion of the infant's funeral.  My third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton was in the picture.  Thomas was the father of both Frank Slaton and Susan SlatonThomas died 26 Jan 1899.  So the infant must have been born and died prior to 1899.

There is a note on the back of the photograph that says that the infant was a son.  I'm sure that the note was added to the photograph many years after the event, and was based on someone's memory of the event.  Subsequent research has shown that the infant who died was a daughter, Mary F. Free, 31 Dec 1894 to 25 Jul 1897.  So the photograph was taken about 26 or 27 Jul 1897.

William A. Allen married (1) Sarah Shrader, and she died before 1900.  Subsequent to 1900, William A. Allen married (2) Lydia Catherine Harrison and married (3) Rebecca Frances (Cricket) Slaton.  So in 1900, William A. Allen was between his first wife and his second wife.

Lydia Catherine Harrison and Rebecca Frances (Cricket) Slaton were first cousins, with both of them being grandchildren of my third great grandparents Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.

William Allen, Charles Allen, John Allen, Jessie Allen, and Harmon Allen were siblings.  Their description as sons-in-law and daughters-in-law of Robert Miller is not quite correct.  He was really their stepfather.  The parents of all the Allen siblings were John P. Allen and Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Holbert.  John P. Allen died in 1885, and Lizzie Holbert married Robert Miller in 1895.  There is clearly some sort of date problem associated with Harmon Miller, because on the face of it he was born five years after his father's death.

Becky's husband was John Wesley Solomon.  He was the son of James W. Solomon and Sarah C.

I am by no means sure how to interpret "H-brother" for Rufus Walker (Walker) Solomon.  The obvious interpretation would be that he was a half brother of John Wesley Solomon.  But I don't think he was a half brother;  I think he was a brother.  So I don't know what the "H" means.
