      David 10 m w TN attended school

I believe that Elizabeth Mock was the widow of James Abraham Cross, and that James Abraham Cross was the son of Jesse Cross and Susan Hicks.  Another spelling of the Mock surname might be Maulk.  Some researchers have Abraham Cross married Margaret Maulk with a daughter Adaline born about 1844, but there is no evidence for Adaline in this census entry.

To the extent that this theory is true, James Abraham Cross who married Elizabeth or Margaret Mock or Maulk would have been the grandnephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

page 10b, dwelling number 143, family number 143
Cross Jno 62 m w laborer VA
       David 9 m w TN

I believe John Cross was the son of Abraham Cross and Elizabeth Ensor.  As such, he would have been the nephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  John Cross married Rachael Sampson in 1816 in Carter County, Tennessee.  If this is the right John Cross, then Rachael apparently died between 1840 and 1850.  It is not clear if David age 9 was a son, a grandson, or some other relation altogether.

I am a little taken aback by John's birthplace of Virginia.  It seems that most of the family members were either born in Baltimore County, Maryland before the family moved to Tennessee, or else they were born in Sullivan County, Tennessee after the family moved to Tennessee.  But Sullivan County is on the Virginia line.  Perhaps some of them lived at times across the line in Virginia, perhaps the line was so ill-defined in the frontier days that they didn't know for sure were the line was, or perhaps this John Cross is not a member of my Cross family.

Also, I have John Cross the son of Abraham Cross and Elizabeth Ensor listed as having been born about 1798.  The John Cross in this census entry was born about 1788.  These facts are not necessarily in conflict, but it does give one pause.

       Sarah 77 f TN
Cross Harriet 19 f TN

Harriet Cross was the daughter of David Looney Cross and Catherine Boy.  Catherine Boy in turn was the daughter of Adam Boy and Sarah Royston, so Harriet was living with her grandparents in 1850.

       Saml. 1 m w TN

Elijah Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Nancy Ann Lane.  As such, he was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  William also had a son named Elijah.  The two Elijahs were first cousins and were about the same age.

Mary (Polly) Malone was Elijah's second wife.  I don't know who Mary's parents were, but there was a Jacob Malone living next door who was probably Mary's brother.

John and Jacob were sons of Elijah Cross and his first wife Catherine Cook.  The remaining children in the census were children of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Malone.
