Jo taught school for thirteen years, beginning in 1925. She taught at the Scarbrough and Claxton schools in Anderson County.
For the last years of her life, Vesta lived in the household of her daughter Cordie and Cordie's husband Ross Scarbrough. During this time, Vestie took long walks along Bethel Valley Road.
Her grandfather was known as Lumm Hackworth. Her uncle William Hackworth was known as Uncle Willie.
It has been said that Samuel Prosise had some kind of a mental illness but Jo remembers that he grew to manhood and he never married.
