Obituary: Mrs. Maud E. Bray.
It became my sad duty, at the request of a heart-broken husband and other near relatives, to try to write something in memory of a dear sister, Maud E. Bray, the daughter of Brother and Sister Hinds, and was born September 28, 1884. She was married to R.H. Bray, October 26, 1902. She professed a sweet hope in Christ sometime during the year 1909 and together with her husband, joined the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church near Blocton, Ala., on Saturday, before the first Sunday in May 1911., and they were baptized the day following by Elder J.D. McElroy. Soon after uniting with the church in Alabama, she and her husband moved to Chattanooga, Tn. and united with the North Chattanooga church by letter. On the 14th day of September 1914, the cold relentless hand of death invaded this home and claimed this dear wife and mother as its victim. Sister Bray was a kind and affectionate woman and one that greatly loved her church and the association of her dear brethren and sisters. In her last illness, she was deprived of the association of those she so much esteemed, as the dreadful disease smallpox had afflicted her and prevented many who would from visiting her. After this dreadful disease in its worst form had so preyed upon her system other diseases laid hold upon her, so that all kind hands and medical skill could do, would not stay the cruel hand of death. In her last hours on earth, though enduring great suffering, she would talk of the beauties of heaven's bright and delightful scenes and the sweet rest that awaits God's children over there. The unworthy writer was called to the home the day after her death, to attempt to speak words of comfort to the sorrowing ones. Oh, how empty and meaningless are words when we attempt to comfort in an hour like this. This dear mother and sister in the lord, was taken away, leaving three little girls to mourn the loss of her all their days; also leaving a dear and devoted husband, father, mother, brothers, sisters who were all greatly devoted to her. After the services, which were conducted at her home, her remains were conveyed to a neat burying ground at Dayton, Tn., where in the presence of a large congregation, they were neatly laid away to await the coming of her blessed lord who will someday call his sleeping saints again from the grave. I feel to say again to her loved ones, weep not for her as those without hope, she but sleeps quietly in the Lord and we can meet her again in the sweet bye and bye. Oh, that all the children of God that are left behind were as devoted to their church as she was. She will be greatly missed at home and at the church, and the unworthy writer feels sure that he has lost a warm friend. May the Lord help us, one and all, to bow in submission to his will, and say, "the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord". Her pastor and friend R. O. Raulston, 806 Dodds Avenue, Chattanooga, Tn.
