Third Generation

16. Jane (Jenny) Peters17,22,44,45,46,47,48 was born on 30 July 1817 in Anderson County, Tennessee.46,47 The birth date on her tombstone is 30 Jul 1821. The England book lists her birth date as 30 Jul 1812. It seems likely that the England book has the last two digits of the year reversed because the author probably obtained the birth date from the tombstone. Census data suggest a birth year of 1817 or 1818, and my best guess is 1817. (RGB)

She appeared in the census in 1830 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Age 10-14, enumerated in the household of her father Thomas Peters.

She appeared in the census in 1840 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Age 20-29, enumerated in the household of her husband John England.

Jane appeared in the census in 1850 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Jane 31 f w TN.

She appeared in the census in 1860 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Jane 42 f w TN.

She appeared in the census in 1870 in Fentress County, Tennessee. Jane 53 f w keeping house TN cannot W.

Jane appeared in the census in 1880 in Morgan County, Tennessee. Jane 62 wife f m w keeping house NC NC NC. Jane's birth place of North Carolina in the 1870 census is probably not correct. All other evidence points to a birth place of Anderson County, Tennessee.

She died on 9 April 1881 in [Morgan County], Tennessee.46,47 It is a guess that she died in Fentress County because she was buried in Fentress County. She was enumerated in the 1870 census in Fentress County and in the 1880 census in Morgan County.

She was buried about 10 April 1881 in Mount Union Baptist Church Cemetery (Campground Cemetery), Fentress County, Tennessee.46,47 Tombstone: Jenny England, 7/30/1821 - 4/9/1881, w/o John England.

Jane was referred to as Jennie on the death certificate of her son Luke England and also on her tombstone. All early census records list her name as Jane.

Jane (Jenny) Peters and John England were married on 23 May 1839 in Scarbrough, Anderson County, Tennessee.17,48 Issued 22nd May 1839, John England to Jane Peters, Executed this 23rd May 1839, Henry Chiles Justice of the Peace. The marriage is known to have taken place in the Scarbrough community because of a deposition by Charles M. Smith in John England's Civil War pension application. Charles M. Smith identified himself as living in Scarbrough. The deposition goes on to say: "At the time he (John England) married he came to the squire close to where I live to be married. I lived 3 to four to five miles of him when the war came up and before that."

John England22,48,49,50 was born on 10 July 1815 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He was a stiller and a farmer.
