Clinton MO, Jan 1936 - R. A. Prosise, beloved and honored throughout Henry county and one of Brownington's most prominent citizens, died at 5 a.m., Thursday, January 9, at the home where he had lived the past 28 years. He had been in declining health the past three years, his trouble being diabetes, and the last six months he was dangerously ill and suffered intense pain. Robert Alexander Prosise was born December 5, 1856, on the banks of the beautiful Clinch River at Clinton, Tenn. He grew to splendid manhood here and January 7, 1885, was united in marriage to Miss Emma C. White of Knoxville. The day of his marriage, he and his bride left Tennessee for Missouri, making their home first on a farm near Coal in Henry County. Later they moved to Mt. Zion and it was here that his wife died 35 years ago. Their only son, Thomas Dudley, died the same year as his mother and both were buried in Mt. Zion cemetery. later the bodies were removed to beautiful Maplewood Cemetery, south of! Brownington. By this first wife, Mr. Prosise also had four daughters who survive: Mrs. Ella Bonwell, Detroit, Mich; Mrs. Wray Shadwell, Clinton; Mrs. Perce Bolinger, Coal; Mrs. Russell McElwee, Kansas City. Many years after the death of his wife, he returned to his childhood home for a visit and there met Miss Effie Hill of Knoxville. About a year later, he returned to Tennessee and August 23, 1917, he and Miss Hill were married. Twenty-eight years ago Mr. Prosise went to Brownington where he built the Brownington telephone exchange, which he owned and operated since, with the happy and untiring assistance of his wife since their marriage. The Brownington exchange operates in the town and has a toll line to Mt. Zion. It is also connected with the Bell and United Telephone systems for long distance calls. The exchange was noted for its outstanding efficiency as all service was prompt and willing. In all this work, Mrs. Prosise was closely associated with her husband, and she shouldered her full share of the responsibility on keeping the lines always in good shape and ready for use. In his earlier maturity, Mr. Prosise attended the Presbyterian Church, but in later years he went to the Christian Church as his wife joined it when she came to Brownington. He supported the church and its work in many ways. The great outdoors held a lifelong fascination for Mr. Prosise, and he was never more contented than when he was tramping the countryside with a dog and his gun or with a rod and line. He had a cabin on the Osage where he made frequent trips to hunt and fish and he was one of the most active and enthusiastic members of the Henry County Fox hunters Association. Mr. Prosise was interested in anything that meant the progress of his community. He was especially active in getting good roads to Brownington and one of his last acts along this line was to use his influence in getting the farm-to-market road which has just been completed from Brownington ! to highway 13, south of Deepwater. A jovial, friendly man, Mr. Prosise was known over the entire county and in many communities outside the county, and nearly everyone he met was added to his list of friends. Surviving Mr. Prosise besides his wife, who was ever a devoted and faithful companion, are his four daughters, also seven grandchildren, Chester and Glenn Smith of the U.S. Navy at San Diego, Calif; Franklin and Kathryn Shadwell, Clinton; Judson McElwee, Kansas City; Juanita Bonwell, Detroit; P.
