In Settlers by the Long Grey Trail by John Houston Harrison, Susan Slaton was described as "well to do". It also says that she moved from Virginia to Jefferson County, Tennessee. It is doubtful that she did. She was born in North Carolina and there is no evidence that she ever lived in Virginia. Her husband did move from Virginia to Tennessee, and it is likely that the author of Settlers by the Long Grey Trail incorrectly generalized the information about her husband to apply to her.

Susan A. Slaton and Joseph (Joe) Harrison were married on 24 October 1872 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee.32 p.24, line 6, 10/24/1872, Joseph Harrison to Susan Slaydon. I solemnized the Rites of Matrimony between the above named parties on the 24" day of October, 1872. John Cox, M.G.

Joe served in the military between 10 February 1862 and 23 February 1865 in the Civil War. Joseph served as a private in Company K, 3rd Tennessee Infantry, Union. The index card in his military service file also lists him as a musician, so perhaps he was also a bugler. He enlisted on 10 Feb 1862 in Flat Lick, Kentucky. Flat Lick is just north of Cumberland Gap, so Joseph must have made his way from East Tennessee into Kentucky via the gap in order to enlist. He was listed as present on all unit muster roles until 30 Jun 1864. That muster role reported that he had left the unit on 14 Mar 1864 at Resaca, Georgia due to sickness. There was a large battle at Resaca between 13 Mar 1864 and 15 Mar 1864. Resaca is about 65 miles north of Atlanta, and the 3rd Tennessee Infantry was a part of Gen. Sherman's army during the Atlanta campaign. Joseph has rejoined his unit by the time he mustered out on 23 Feb 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Joe died on 19 October 1911 at the age of 71 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.33 His tombstone says that he died 19 Oct 1911. His Civil War Pension records say that he died on 19 Oct 1911. His death certificate says that he died 11 Oct 1911, but his death certificate was not recorded until nearly a year after his death. It is suspected that there wouldn't have been a death certificate at all except that a certificate may have been required in order for his widow to file an application for a Civil War Widow's Pension.
