She appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Rebecca 33 f w NC cannot R/W. Her name was really listed as Francis. Note from Rebecca Uldrich: Hazel and Loretta said at one get togather family talk said she was Cherokee and the reason nothing was known about her family was because many of the Cherokee who stayed behind wouldn't acknowledge being Cherokee for fear of being shipped west. (Rebecca Uldrich nee Slaton is a g granddaughter of Francis Marion Slaton, and a gg granddaughter Rebecca Frances George. Hazel is Hazel Cox. Loretta is Loretta Slaton Bull. Both of them are granddaughters of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and g granddaughters of Rebecca Frances George.)

Thomas Fielden (Tom) Slaton and Rebecca Frances George had the following children:

John A Slaton6,7 was born in 1845 in Surry County, North Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. John 5 m w NC.

He appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. J.A. 15 m w TN attended school (he was really born on North Carolina).

John died on 16 June 1865 at the age of 20 in the Civil War. There are several stories about John's death, probably none of which are precisely correct, but probably all of which contain a kernel of the truth. The story that "he froze to death in the Civil War" is almost certainly an oversimplification, since he was captured and imprisoned late in the war, and died after the war was over. A variation on the theme is that when he was captured, he was stripped and tied to a tree overnight on a freezing cold night. Another variation on the theme is that his feet froze and had to be amputated. Another variation on the theme is that his feet were bloody and infected. It is said that his father Thomas fetched him home from the prison camp in Richmond after the war. It is also said that his brother Frank fetched him home from the prison camp in Richmond after the war. Of course, both Thomas and Frank may have made the trip to Richmond.

Irrespective of the circumstances of his capture (whether he was tied to a tree or not), I believe John's health must have been ruined by his time in prison camp. The winter of 1865 was an expecially harsh winter. By that stage of the war, his Confederate captors had virtually no food, clothing, or boots for themselves, and many of them were barefoot in the snow with bloody feet. Their prisoners such as John could not possibly have fared any better. Given the dates from John's military record, I believe he probably did make it home alive from prison camp in Richmond, and probably died at home in Jefferson County, Tennessee. (RGB) He was buried about 17 June 1865 at Shady Grove Cemetery in Jefferson County, Tennessee. He was a Civil War soldier, and he froze to death during the war (Hazel Cox). There is a tombstone at Shady Grove Cemetery which is transcribed as Slaton, Corp's J.A. which I believe is his. It gives his unit as Co D 9th Tenn. Cav.
