William appeared in the census in 1861 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Special 1861 census, Dist 2, #422 William Slaydon (Note: I cannot eliminate the possibility that this census entry was for his son William J. Slaydon. RGB).

He appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. p.331 Dist. 2, 23 Jun 1870, dwelling number 250, family number 250, Dandridge PO Slaydon, William 77 m w farm laborer VA, Mahala B. 29 f w keeps house NC, Emily F. 43 f w at home VA.

William died about 1882 at the age of 90 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The 1882 date is a bit of a guess. William was enumerated in the 1880 census, age 88. So it would have been likely that he died not too long after 1880 in any case. There is no known record that he ever owned land in Jefferson County, and there is no will or settlement recorded at the courthouse. Nevertheless, the fact that his son Thomas first appeared as a landowner on the 1882 tax list suggests that there may have been an inheritance other than land that Thomas used to buy his land in 1882. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a deed that reflects Thomas coming to own his land. The only record is that 1882 is the year that Thomas first paid taxes on land, in addition to his normal payment of a poll tax that he had paid in previous years. (RGB)

William Slaydon was a private in Sale's Battalion Cavalry, Virginia Militia as a confederate soldier in the War of 1812.

There is always some question as to the correct spelling of William's surname. His descendants in Jefferson County, Tennessee have adopted primarily the spelling "Slaton". However, William's War of 1812 pension application has two instances of his signature (not his mark, his actual signature). In both cases, he spelled his name "Slaydon".

William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin were married on 23 February 1817 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Susannah Flippin, daughter of Joseph Flippin and (Mrs. Joseph Flippin), was born in 1798 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

She appeared in the census in 1820 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Age 18-25, enumerated in the household of her husband William Slaydon.

She appeared in the census in 1830 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Age 30-39, enumerated in the household of her husband William Slaydon.

Susannah appeared in the census in 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Age 40-49, enumerated in the household of her husband William Slaydon.

She appeared in the census in 1850 in Surry County, North Carolina. Slaton Susannah 52 f w VA.

She appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. S. 60 f w VA cannot R/W.

Susannah died between 1861 and 1869 at the age of 63 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

She appeared on the 1860 census and not on the 1870 census. Her husband appeared to be a widower on the 1870 census. (RGB)

Ralph Slaton was born about 1832 in North Carolina. The 1850 Surry County census entry says that Ralph Slaton was born in North Carolina. But in 1850 he was living with the Thomas Cave family where everybody was listed via ditto marks as having been born in North Carolina. I think it more likely that he was born in Virginia since I think it likely that he was the son of William Slaton and Susannah Flippin and the rest of the children in the family were born in Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Stokes County, North Carolina. Age 05-09, enumerated in the household of his father William Slaydon. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Surry County, North Carolina. Surry County North Carolina North Division, Stewart's District, 7 Sep 1850; p.307a, dwelling number 567, family number 567; Slaton Ralph 18 m w NC invalid, enumerated in the household of Thomas Cave.

Ralph died between 1851 and 1859 at the age of 19 in [North Carolina]. He was enumerated in the 1850 census, but in now subsequent censuses. Ralph Slaton is not proven as a son of William Slaton and Susannah Flippin. However, he was living six houses away from them in the 1850 census for Surry County, North Carolina. Also, there is a hole in the William Slaton and Susannah Flippin family where Ralph fits perfectly.
