Schmitt, Toni Peters - was born in Clinton, Tennessee on September 10, 1925 and died at the age of 85 on Sunday, October 31, 2010. Her father, Benjamin Harrison Peters was the oldest son of the late Samuel Tobias Peters and her mother, Edna Cleo Stair, was a member of the Stair family, both families being life long residents of Clinton. She was married to the late Charles Rudolph Schmitt of New York City, whom she met at a Tennis Court Dance in the early years of Oak Ridge when he was sent here by the U.S. Army. She is survived by two children, Charles Jeffrey Schmitt and his wife, Barbie, and Katherine Schmitt Gomez and her husband, Danny. She is also survived by her grandchildren Emily Schmitt Lavin, and her husband, Craig; Charles Eric Schmitt and his wife, Tina; James Nicholas Gomez and his wife, Emily and Rebecca Gomez; great grandchildren Alexander and Cynthia Lavin, and Caitlin Schmitt. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Stair Peters Pappas; and many nephews and nieces and a host of Stair cousins. Toni graduated from Clinton High School and was employed as a Legal Secretary in the United States Engineer Department, located in the "Castle on the Hill" in Oak Ridge from which she retired to raise her family. After raising her son and daughter, Toni accepted the position of Secretary of the Disposition Manager of the U.S. Government when the Oak Ridge houses were offered for sale to the public. Also, during this time she worked as part time Secretary at Faith Lutheran church where she was a member. Her last place of employment was at ORTEC where she was Secretary to the Personnel Manager. Toni was an avid Bridge player at the local Duplicate Contract Bridge League and had earned the status of "Life Master" in 2007. Visitation will be held at Highland West Funeral Home, 9913 Sherrill Blvd in Knoxville on Tuesday evening, November 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. A private internment will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 3 at 4:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1300 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Pastor Bill Wagner and Pastor Jim Evers will officiate. Following the service a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Faith Lutheran Church. All are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.

Toni was buried on 3 November 2010 at Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens in Oak Ridge, Anderson County, Tennessee.¹²⁵
