1920 Census, San Francisco County, California

Kemler Andrew 32 roomer m m w telephone operator MD MD MD

I believe that Andrew Charles Kemler age 32 later married Esther G. Hopkins.  Esther was the daughter of William A. (Fred) Hopkins and Eliza Lydia Bryan.  Eliza was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter Hubbard Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, Eliza was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Andrew married first Lillian J. Morel.  The 1930 census suggests that they were married about 1920.  This census entry reports that Andrew was married, but Lillian was not enumerated in the same household.  However, I cannot find her in any other household either.  Lillian died in 1946.  Unless Andrew and Lillian were divorced, that means that Andrew married Esther G. Hopkins sometime after 1946.

Eula E. Hopkins age 29 was the daughter of Eliza Lydia Bryan and William A. (Fred) Hopkins.  Eliza was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter Hubbard Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, Eliza was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

The birth places for Eula and her brother Maurice age 20 are manifestly incorrect.  Both of them were indeed born in Colorado.  Their father was born either in Tennessee or Virginia.  Their mother was born in Tennessee.  So their birth places should have been listed either as CO TN TN or as CO VA TN.

Eula's husband was Herbert Ferguson (Bert) Gibbs age 30.

p.279b, 312 Richland Ave., dwelling number 45, family number 49
Bryan Maggie E. 82 head f w w OH VA VA

Margaret E. (Maggie) Mauk age 82 was the daughter of Michael Mauk and Juliet Wilson.  In 1920, Maggie was the widow of Jacob Bryan.

Jacob Bryan was the son of Enoch G. Bryan and Rebecca Moyer.  It is not yet proven, but I believe that Enoch was the great grandson of my seventh great grandfather Cornelius O'Bryan.  Which is to say, I believe that Enoch was the son of Cornelius Bryan Sr. and the grandson of John Andrew Bryan.  I am descended from John Andrew Bryan's brother Thomas Bryan Sr.

Hansen Isabelle 53 head f w w VA England VA
Jones Jerusia 60 wife f w w TX TX TX

Jerusa Jane Gaut age 60 was the daughter of John J. Gaut and Margaret Angeline (Angeline) Bryan.

Angeline Bryan was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, Angeline was the sister of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

In 1920, Jerusa was the widow of James Graves Jones who died in 1912.  This census entry is somewhat in error.  Jerusa was really about 63 years old in 1920.  More importantly, she and both of her parents were born in Tennessee rather than in Texas.

Hopkins Eliza 55 mother f w w housekeeper TN TN TN

Eliza Lydia Bryan age 55 was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, Eliza was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen Bryan.  I know very little about Eliza except that she married Fred Hopkins.

The places of birth that are listed in this census entry are a good bit different than the places of birth that are listed in the 1930 census.  I think the birth places from the 1930 census for this family seem more credible than the birth places from the 1920 census.

Bryan.

Peter George Karpus age 37 was the son of Andrew Karpus and Zugacus.
