Jacob Benton Cross age 8 was the son of Franklin W. (Frank) Cross and Virginia Florence Laymance.  Frank Cross died in 1862, and Virginia Florence Laymance married second Jonathan Branham.  The census enumerator listed Jacob with his stepfather's surname rather than with Jacob's own surname.

I cannot explain why Virginia Florence Laymance was listed as Mary rather than as Virginia or as Florence.  Perhaps there was a mistake, or perhaps her full name was something like Mary Virginia Florence Laymance.  ; Her age and birth place were enumerated correctly.  Also, she was listed in the 1880 census as V. F. Branham, so it seems extremely likely that we have the correct person in the correct family.

Jacob was born in Tennessee, probably in Morgan County.  I am a little puzzled that William J. Branham was born in Tennessee.  I would have expected that he was born in Indiana after the family moved.  However, the 1880 census also shows that William was born in Tennessee, so perhaps the family moved between 1865 and 1867.

Frank Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary Winters, and the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Frank was the nephew of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.
