1860 Census, McMinn County, Tennessee

Dist. 6, McMinn County, Tennessee, 18 Jul 1860, Hamilton Cross Roads PO (changed to Eureka)

Mesimer William 38 m w farmer /$600 TN
         Mary A. 28 f w TN

I don't know who William B. Messamore was, nor if he was connected to my Messamore family of Anderson County.  It seems more likely that William was connected to the Henry Messimer family.

Mary Ann Torbett was the daughter of John Torbett and Sarah.  They were married in 1850 in McMinn County, and didn't have any children by the time of the 1860 census.  So it seems unlikely that they ever had any children.

In 1860, Mary Dennis was the widow of James Mitchell White.  She married second James Elder in 1864, and married third Gideon Cate in 1871.  Gideon Cate was the son John Cate Jr. and Mary Ann Koontz.  As such, Gideon was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Joshua Cate and the first cousin of my third great grandmother Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.

James Elder was the son of Robert Elder and Sarah Moore. Sarah (Sally) Womack age 52 was his first wife.  Sarah died before 1864, and James married second Mary Dennis from dwelling number 140 above on 14 Apr 1864.

I am not related to James Elder, but there were a number of cases where members of the Elder family married into one of my families.  For example, James' sister Ava married into my Cate family.  Also, James' widow Mary Dennis married Gideon Cate after James' death in 1866.
