  • [S2272] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 27 January 2017 (Bob Peters).

He was always known as Bob. I haven't found any documents at this point that list his name as Bob, but everybody called him Bob and he was known to me as Uncle Bob Peters. It seems likely that he was named for his Uncle - Robert Asbury Peters, but I haven't found any documents that provide direct evidence of his namesake.

  • [S2299] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 11 February 2017 (Joyce Yadon and Orval Nall marriage).

It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her great grandmother Sarah (Sallie) England. It was common in the 1800's that Sallie was a nickname for Sarah. However, Sallie Cole's name probably was Sallie rather than Sarah. The only record that lists her name as Sarah is the 1880 census. Given all the other records that list her name as Sallie, the 1880 census enumerator probably heard that her name was Sallie and wrote down it down as Sarah, much as a census enumerator might have heard that someone's name was Bob and written it down as Robert.

It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her grandmother Jane Peters.

In addition, the following records (among others) list her name as Joyce. Her marriage record to A. E. Harrell lists her name as Joyce Nall. The marriage record of her son Teddy to Carolyn Sue David lists her maiden name as Joyce Yadon. The marriage record of her daughter Amy lists her maiden name as Joyce Yadon. The obituary of her step-father Clyde Cole lists her name as Joyce Harrell. Her own obituary lists her name as Mrs. Joyce Yadon Harrell. The obituary of her husband A.E. • [S2371] Obituary: Wright, Virlen Ray; Snyder Funeral Homes [Sunbury, Ohio], 3 May 2017, viewed at www.snyderfuneralhomes.com on 14 September 2017.

Snyder Funeral Homes web site (many locations near Mt. Vernon, Ohio), Ohio 3 May 2017. Virlen “Ray” Wright August 12, 1939 ‒ May 02, 2017, Centerburg .
Ray Wright, age 77 of Centerburg, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at St. Ann’s Hospital with his loved ones by his side. He was born on August 12, 1939 in Anderson County, Tennessee to the late Audie and Lucille (Peters) Wright. A graduate of Centerburg High School in 1957, he went on to serve in the US Navy. While his ship was at the Saint John New Brunswick Port in Canada, he met his bride to be, Dorothy Kernighan. Married, they shared 53 wonderful years together, raising a family, and sharing life’s journey. Following retirement as a quality assurance inspector with Western Electric/ATT/Bell Communication Research, Ray operated Wright-Way Locksmith and Wright-Way Water Systems. He also was a driver for Ross Jeep Eagle and repaired voting machines for the Knox County Board of Elections. He was a member of the Sunbury Eagles and V.F.W., Centerburg AMVETS, and the Mt. Vernon Moose and Elks Lodges. He was also an active volunteer and supporter of the Centerburg High School Athletic and Music Boosters, as well as the Centerburg Baseball Little League. Self-trained in virtually every trade, he enjoyed golf, gardening, and was a stubborn fan of the Cleveland sports teams. Never with idle hands, if there was a need Ray was the first to lend a hand. Possessing a friendly and gregarious nature, he was the consummate supporter. Fun loving, he was always persistent and at times stubborn. He was the proudest being a supportive husband, father, and grandfather, for which he will forever be remembered. Ray is survived by his wife of 53 years Dorothy; children: Debbie Henthorn (Harry Westergaard) of Centerburg, Randy (Nicki) Wright of Galena, Ryan (Tracy) Wright of Centerburg; 7 grandchildren: Allison (Scott) Miller, Trey Henthorn, Ryan, Isaiah, and Logan Wright, Alaina and Gavin Wright; great-grandchildren: Madison, Tyler, and Lily Miller, and Elliott Hamannthorn; brother Eddie (Jo) Wright; sister Brenda Eagon; mother-in-law Fern Kernighan, several nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins. His family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, May 5th during his Celebration of Life at the DeVore- Snyder Funeral Home, 637 N. St. Rt. 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074. Ray always wore red on Fridays in honor of veterans, “until they all come home” and you are encouraged to wear the same. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hilliar Twp. Hello, Mr. Bryan,

I have looked up to 2 weeks after the date of death for Orval Nall, but did
not find an obituary listed for him. According to his Find A Grave listing,
he is buried in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, in Gantt, AL (Covington
County), so I think he was no longer living in Mobile at the time of his
death. I am sorry I could not find what you are looking for.

    Regards,

    Elizabeth Theris

Name: Jerry Bryan email Address: email address Phone: (865) 386-7536 Message: I'm a genealogist who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee. I'm seeking a marriage record for Orval Andrew Nall and Thelma Joyce (Joyce) Yadon. I do not know for a fact but I suspect that they were married in Mobile. Orval was a merchant seaman based out of Mobile. Joyce was from Knoxville and met Orval while visiting a cousin in Mobile. They were both born in 1927 and their only child was born in 1945. So they were probably married in 1944 when both of them would have been only 17 years old. Not long after the child was born, Joyce called her mother in Tennessee and asked her to come bring her home. They were divorced in 1946 in Knoxville, and there was no further contact with Orval. He was killed in a car wreck in 1963 in Opp. I'm accustomed to paying normal copying and postage costs for such records. Is there a mechanism in place were I could order this marriage record based on the information that I have available? Thanks, Jerry Bryan
