Minnie Cox Slaton, oldest child of George and Loretta Cox, was born in
Jefferson County, Tenn., in 1888. She like many other children on the farm,
went to school and did the chores, and as the oldest child, usually had to look after
the young ones. She is a typical Nichols in stature and character, small and petite,
red hair and beautiful eyes, and a beautiful singer. She is perhaps one of the
few living today in that area that can still sing old Harp Music, which was almost
a lost art, even when I was a child. I can remember in my young days it was
always so nice to visit them and spend a week or so hearing her beautiful voice
in song along with my aunt, especially in the early morning when the aroma
of the coffee and the frying of ham meat was so pleasant I always get a kick out of
Minnie saying just about every time she sees me. "Oh, yes, I used to carry you
around on my hip when you were a baby and spank you good for crying.” She is
a wonderful woman, always ready for a good talk, or a good laugh, and one of
the most entertaining and friendly people you would ever meet. She married
Porter Slaton, who resided in Jefferson County. His father was in the Union Army of
the Civil War. Porter who was a fine man and loved farming, especially liked to
grow wheat. He, about ever since I can remember, had threshing machine outfits
and also had a saw mill and a good farm. He was a fine Christian man, a solid
Republican and loved to talk politics with his friends. He died in 1954 and is
buried in the old cemetery, Mount Zion. This cemetery is just about two miles
west of Dandridge on the Knoxville Road, setting just off the new road. Ask any
of the old settlers at Dandridge just where it is. Minnie and Porter had eight
children, namely, Eula Mae, Alma G., Alger F., Eunice B., Ralph P., Conard,
Loretta and William E.
Eula the oldest daughter of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Haskel
Bolden. They had two boys, Dennis and Kenneth. Eula and her husband went to
New Castle, Indiana shortly after they were married. Their two sons were born in
Indiana. Dennis, the oldest son is married and has two children named Dane
and Dennis. Dennis married Isabelle Sarrell of North Carolina. Eula and her
husband Haskel were divorced and several years after her divorce she married
James Burchett from Albany, Ky. She and her husband and her two sons and
families reside in or near New Castle, Indiana.
Alma, second child of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Orville Ailey
from over around the Muddy Creek Valley. He is a great guy and I like him.
It was amusing when I told about the incident at one of our reunions what
happened to my brother Ralph. He was teaching school in this area, and a group
of folks were going to scalp him because he had whipped one of their daughters.
I have told of this incident in comments on my brother and will just say here that
Orville Ailey is a close relative of those that were about to scalp my brother. I
laughingly say I want no part of him because he belongs to the scalping group and
he gets a big kick out of it. Alma and Orville's two children's names are Robert
Earl and Denver E. The oldest boy, Robert, married Polly Ann Seals of Rocky
Valley, Tenn. They have one child. His name is Joseph Michael. Denver E.
married Christine Richards from North Carolina. They have no children at
this writing.
Alger, third son of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, is a fine farmer and good
businessman. He has followed in his father's footsteps remarkably well. He is one
of the fine sons of Minnie and Porter and perhaps a little bit my favorite from the
standpoint I have been around him more than the other children and also

The namesakes of Alva Edward Peters are uncertain. Alva is not a rare name, but neither is it very common. No other men named Alva are known in the Peters family. The only man named Alva in an allied family was Alva Scarbrough was the second cousin of Alva Peters. In turn, it seems possible if not likely that both Alva Peters and Alva Oliver were named for Alva A. Oliver who married Susan Emily (Emily) Peters. Emily was Alva Peters' grandaunt, having been the sister of Alva's grandmother Zipporah Peters. So Alva A. Oliver was Alva Peters' granduncle by marriage. Alva A. Oliver in turn was almost certainly named for his granduncle Alva Oliver who was an early settler in Anderson County.
Edward is a fairly common name in general, but it seldom appears in the Peters family. Alva Peters certainly didn't have any close relatives named Edward. A possible exception is that Alva's father John H. Peters had a twin brother William E. Peters who was killed in the Civil War. William's middle name is not known. However, given the propensity at the time Alva was born to name children after family members it seems possible that William's full name was William Edward Peters and that Alva's middle name came from William.
- [S2218] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 10 December 2016 (Sallie Cole).
It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her great grandmother Sarah (Sallie) England. It was common in the 1800's that Sallie was a nickname for Sarah. However, Sallie Cole's name probably was Sallie rather than Sarah. The only record that lists her name as Sarah is the 1880 census. Given all the other records that list her name as Sallie, the 1880 census enumerator probably heard that her name was Sallie and wrote down it down as Sarah, much as a census enumerator might have heard that someone's name was Bob and written it down as Robert.
It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her grandmother Jane Peters.
