- [S2008] Obituary: Traughber, Shirley Ann; Asheville Citizen-Times [Asheville, North Carolina], 5 December 2015, viewed at www.legacy.com on 8 December 2015.
Asheville Citizen-Times [Asheville, North Carolina], 5 Dec 2015.
Shirley Ann Traughber passed away December 3, 2015 as a result of emphysema at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community. Shirley was born April 7, 1935, daughter of the late Lon and Edna Williams. She grew up in Illinois and Knoxville, TN and graduated from the University of Tennessee. Shirley has been a resident of Asheville since 1968. She was the proud parent of Jeffrey William Traughber of Lake Tahoe, NV and Todd Alan Traughber, who lives in the Asheville area. She is also survived by a brother, David Williams of the Knoxville area and two nephews, Tim and Randy Williams. She was formerly very active in community affairs, primarily with beautification and environmental projects, and also retired as a real estate broker. Shirley was an outdoor enthusiast, who loved gardening and golf. With a great appreciation for animals, she loved them all, especially dogs, cats, bears and deer. When it came to entertainment, she loved that too. On occasion, she would cook for dozens of people in a small "one butt kitchen" and the party always seemed to turn out well. She really enjoyed good food and drink. Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was one of a kind! A Celebration Of Life will be held in her honor and remembrances at 3:00 PM on Monday, December 7, 2015 at the St. Giles Chapel of Deerfield. In lieu of flowers, please remember Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, 31 Glendale Avenue, Asheville, NC 28803 (www.bwar.org). Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family and a memorial register is available online at www.grocefuneralhome.com.

YADON DIES. Bayard Yadon, one of my favorite newspapermen, died Monday morning and I was hurt when I heard about it. As the News-Sentinel said, he was a pipe-smoking, philosophical person. I used to work with Yadon and he was sort of a philosopher. In a calm sort of way he would say funny things that would put me to roaring and he and I used to back off in corners and tell each other all the latest pokes we'd heard. Although I haven't seen him but two or three times in a couple of years, I know I'll miss him.

Death Claims Bayard Yadon, Veteran Reporter Was Well Known in Knoxville
Bayard Yadon, New-Sentinel reporter assigned to cover the court house, and a frequent contributor of poetry and feature articles to his paper, died Monday at 6:25 a.m. at Fort Sanders Hospital. He was 37 years old. Mr. Yadon had been critically ill since Friday night, suffering from sinus infection. He became semi-conscious late Friday night. Pneumonia developed late Sunday and hastened his death. He was surrounded by his wife, his two children and his three sisters when the end came. A native of Union County, Mr. Yadon attended schools there and later was a student at Central High school in Knoxville. After serving with the American Expeditionary Forces overseas, he returned to Knoxville, studied law, and was later admitted to the bar. He became interested in literary work, however and began working as a reporter for the old Knoxville Sentinel. In 1923 he left the Sentinel and became news editor of the Middlesboro Daily News for year and then returned to the Sentinel and became its city editor. When the News absorbed the Sentinel Mr. Yadon joined the News-Sentinel staff. Mr. Yadon was a member of Washington Pike M. E. church and Farragut council, No. 11, Jr. O. U. A. M. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ella Yadon; two children, Ada Louise, nine, and Thelma Joyce, six; one brother, J. L. Yadon, Route 12, and three sisters, Mrs. J. F. Burnette, Mrs. Otis Keck, and Mrs. J. E. McDonald, all of Knoxville. The body was removed from Rose mortuary to home off Washington pike, and the Ritta community, Monday at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at the home. The Rev. W. A. McCormack of Mascot M. E. church and the Rev. J. F. Benton, pastor of Washington Pike M. E. church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lynnhurst Resthaven Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Benton J. Strong, Lloyd E Miller, Warner Ogden, Steve Humphreys, Bob Cunningham and Bert Vincent. Honorary pallbearers will be Judge Hu Webster of the court of domestic relations; Judge Sam O. Houston of the county court; Judge Carlock of second circuit court; R. M. Murphy, county agent; J. C. Rutherford, criminal court clerk; Frank L. West, clerk and master; Frank Montgomery, president of Knoxville Bar association; Leslie M. - [S2150] Wyatt M. Nichols Sr.; The Nichols Book: Some Early Nichols Families in America, Their Origins and Histories; Cleveland, Ohio; Block Printing Company, 1962; page 69.
Minnie Cox Slaton, oldest child of George and Loretta Cox, was born in
Jefferson County, Tenn., in 1888. She like many other children on the farm,
went to school and did the chores, and as the oldest child, usually had to look after
the young ones. She is a typical Nichols in stature and character, small and petite,
red hair and beautiful eyes, and a beautiful singer. She is perhaps one of the
few living today in that area that can still sing old Harp Music, which was almost
a lost art, even when I was a child. I can remember in my young days it was
always so nice to visit them and spend a week or so hearing her beautiful voice
in song along with my aunt, especially in the early morning when the aroma
of the coffee and the frying of ham meat was so pleasant I always get a kick out of
Minnie saying just about every time she sees me. "Oh, yes, I used to carry you
around on my hip when you were a baby and spank you good for crying.” She is
a wonderful woman, always ready for a good talk, or a good laugh, and one of
the most entertaining and friendly people you would ever meet. She married
Porter Slaton, who resided in Jefferson County. His father was in the Union Army of
the Civil War. Porter who was a fine man and loved farming, especially liked to
grow wheat. He, about ever since I can remember, had threshing machine outfits
and also had a saw mill and a good farm. He was a fine Christian man, a solid
Republican and loved to talk politics with his friends. He died in 1954 and is
buried in the old cemetery, Mount Zion. This cemetery is just about two miles
west of Dandridge on the Knoxville Road, setting just off the new road. Ask any
of the old settlers at Dandridge just where it is. Minnie and Porter had eight
children, namely, Eula Mae, Alma G., Alger F., Eunice B., Ralph P., Conard,
Loretta and William E.
Eula the oldest daughter of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Haskel
Bolden. They had two boys, Dennis and Kenneth. Eula and her husband went to
New Castle, Indiana shortly after they were married. Their two sons were born in
Indiana. Dennis, the oldest son is married and has two children named Dane
and Dennis. Dennis married Isabelle Sarrell of North Carolina. Eula and her
husband Haskel were divorced and several years after her divorce she married
James Burchett from Albany, Ky. She and her husband and her two sons and
families reside in or near New Castle, Indiana.
Alma, second child of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Orville Ailey
from over around the Muddy Creek Valley. He is a great guy and I like him.
It was amusing when I told about the incident at one of our reunions what
happened to my brother Ralph. He was teaching school in this area, and a group
of folks were going to scalp him because he had whipped one of their daughters.
I have told of this incident in comments on my brother and will just say here that
Orville Ailey is a close relative of those that were about to scalp my brother. I
laughingly say I want no part of him because he belongs to the scalping group and
he gets a big kick out of it. Alma and Orville's two children's names are Robert
Earl and Denver E. The oldest boy, Robert, married Polly Ann Seals of Rocky
Valley, Tenn. They have one child. His name is Joseph Michael. Denver E.
married Christine Richards from North Carolina. They have no children at
this writing.
Alger, third son of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, is a fine farmer and good
businessman. He has followed in his father's footsteps remarkably well. He is one
of the fine sons of Minnie and Porter and perhaps a little bit my favorite from the
standpoint I have been around him more than the other children and also

- [S2217] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 6 December 2016 (Alva Peters).
Jerry Bryan, research notes, 6 December 2016
The namesakes of Alva Edward Peters are uncertain. Alva is not a rare name, but neither is it very common. No other men named Alva are known in the Peters family. The only man named Alva in an allied family was Alva Scarbrough was the second cousin of Alva Peters. In turn, it seems possible if not likely that both Alva Peters and Alva Oliver were named for Alva A. Oliver who married Susan Emily (Emily) Peters. Emily was Alva Peters' grandaunt, having been the sister of Alva's grandmother Zipporah Peters. So Alva A. Oliver was Alva Peters' granduncle by marriage. Alva A. Oliver in turn was almost certainly named for his granduncle Alva Oliver who was an early settler in Anderson County.
Edward is a fairly common name in general, but it seldom appears in the Peters family. Alva Peters certainly didn't have any close relatives named Edward. A possible exception is that Alva's father John H. Peters had a twin brother William E. Peters who was killed in the Civil War. William's middle name is not known. However, given the propensity at the time Alva was born to name children after family members it seems possible that William's full name was William Edward Peters and that Alva's middle name came from William.
- [S2218] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 10 December 2016 (Sallie Cole).
It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her great grandmother Sarah (Sallie) England. It was common in the 1800's that Sallie was a nickname for Sarah. However, Sallie Cole's name probably was Sallie rather than Sarah. The only record that lists her name as Sarah is the 1880 census. Given all the other records that list her name as Sallie, the 1880 census enumerator probably heard that her name was Sallie and wrote down it down as Sarah, much as a census enumerator might have heard that someone's name was Bob and written it down as Robert.
It is likely that Sallie Jane Cole was named for her grandmother Jane Peters.

- [S2225] Bryan, Jerry: research notes, 12 December 2016 (Elza Peters).
Elza Cordelia Peters was always called Elzie. For her middle name, it is possible that she was named for her mother's sister, Cordelia Rene Cole. A problem with this theory is that there appear to be no records for Cordelia Rene Cole where her first name is spelled out as Cordelia. She was called Cordie and all known records list her name as Cordie or Cordia. But oral family history suggests that her name actually was Cordelia.

Ernest Lester Peters Sr. was known as Lester, never as Ernest. Except that sometimes he was known as Pete, which is a common practice for men with the Peters surname. He was sometimes called Uncle Pete, even by non-family members.
Lester read music using the shaped note system. He was very upset if the church bought a new hymn book which did not have shaped notes. He stated that his Peters family had come to the United States from Germany.

Mary was one of two people in the Peters family who were commonly known as "Aunt Mary". She was often referred to as "Mary-Bob" after her husband Bob Peters to distinguish her from "Mary-Howard" who was the wife of Howard Peters. "Mary-Bob" was not used as her name, just as a way to refer to her unambiguously. (personal knowledge of Jerry Bryan)

After the death of her mother, Mary was raised by her father's sister Eva (Ev) Hudson and Ev's husband John Henry Holloway. Ev was commonly known as "Aunt Ev", even by people who were not her nieces and nephews. (information provided by Ruth Peters Bryan)
