When growing up in Nebraska, Daniel, his brothers and father had, at times, to hide from the Indians. They would hide in the prairie grasses or under river banks. I remember my grandfather telling me the story that one time an Indian sneaked up on his mother while she was in the yard working, and she threw a kettle of boiling water on the Indian. Daniel attended school in District 1 of Colfax County and finished 8 grades and then quit to go to work. At age 12, he rode a head horse on a grain binder. At age 13, he shocked grain, and at age 14 was the sole shoker for 1 binder - quite a feat for a boy. At age 15, he husked 104 bushels of corn in 1 day. He never again made this record. For the next 8 years, he was a farm laborer. In the fall of 1909, Lucy McFarland, the girlhood friend of Frank's wife came to Schuyler for a visit. On her return to Georgia, she and Dan corresponded, and on October 4, 1910 they were married. In 1912 they moved to a farm in Meigs County, Tennessee. The farm was 10 miles from Dayton and Dan used to walk, or catch a ride to town to shop, carrying groceries home on his back. He crossed the Tennessee River on a ferry. In addition to farming, Dan did a great deal of lumbering as this area was a virgin forest. Many trees were 3-4' in diameter and 1 sycamore, measuring 7' required 4 mules to haul it to the river. Dan also did carpentering and painting for neighbors or residents in the area, building 1 schoolhouse. Lucy's health was bad and the doctors decided she was tubercular, so they left the farm and spent a year on Lookout Mountain, Hamilton County, Tennessee. She did not improve and in 1917 they went to Colorado. They stayed a yea, the doctors gave her less than a year to live, so they returned to her parents in Rossville, Georgia. Her Lucy had her teeth pulled and all signs of tuberculosis left. Lucy died in 1937. In 1938, Dan remarried and in 1939 again moved to Colorado. In 1944, he moved to Eugene, Oregon and lived there until 1959, at which time he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee and lived in a home on the same property as his elder son James. Dan was retired, but continued to make beautiful gardens every year, supplying neighbors and relatives. In 1969, his second wife died and Dan moved into an apartment in Rossville, Georgia not far from his brother Frank. Being an excellent cook and housekeeper, he was well able to take care of himself. Though in his 80's, he took a part-time job as custodian at a near-by church. This still left him time to daily visits and domino games with Frank. Dan joined the Methodist church in early life and remained a Methodist all his life. He was at one time a member of Nebraska State Militia. Dan, Frank, Bern, and Ed were all members together in the same company.
