111. Peter H. Bryan1,3,4,16,45,46,113,115,119,120,121,122,123,124. Birth: 18 May 1819, Sevier County, Tennessee.45,46,116,123,124 It is extremely likely that Peter H. Bryan's middle name was Hubbard. Peter was the second son. His older brother William Enyard Bryan was named for their maternal grandparents William P. Cate and Mary Enyard. Peter H. Bryan was named for their paternal grandfather Peter Bryan, husband of Betty Hubbard. It therefore seems likely that Peter H. Bryan was named for both their paternal grandparents the same way William Enyard Bryan was named for both of their maternal grandparents, and that Peter's full name was Peter Hubbard Bryan.

Residence: May 1878, Sevier County, Tennessee. May 1878 Peter H. Bryan attested the widow's pension of Louisa Haynes Carmichael. Louisa's pension application was based on the War of 1812 service of Lemuel Carmichael. Louisa was living five houses away from Peter H. Bryan in the 1880 census. Lemuel Carmichael owned 320 acres, most of which was willed to Louisa and two of her children in Lemuel's will in 1864. Louisa continued to live on the property for 30 years thereafter. The property was probably on Mutton Hollow Road. Peter H. Bryan's property was probably on Bryan Road. Mutton Hollow Road and Bryan Road are parallel and run fairly close to each other. It is likely that Peter H. Bryan's property adjoined the property of Louisa Haynes Carmichael.

Death: 23 August 1940, age 83, Kodak, Sevier County, Tennessee.116,130,132,133

Obituary: James P. Bryan
James P. Bryan, age 83 of Kodak, died Friday evening August 23, 1940 at 4:00 P.M. Survivors - 1 brother Stewart Bryan of Florence, Ala and 5 sisters, Mrs. Maggie Randolph of Kodak, Mrs. Delia Mynatt, Knoxville, Mrs H. P. McCampbell, New Market, Mrs. Lida Hopkins, California, and Mrs. Mollie Hicks, Colorado. Flower girls, Lena, Helen, Barbara Lou, Mary Bryan, Willie Cate, Beulah McCampbell, Mildred Reed, Ruth and Geneva Underwood, Edna Storms, Fay Houk, Willie Kyle, and Leth (or Letha) Roberts. Pal bearers, Gene, Pink, Elmer, and Mit Bryan, Gene and Walter McCampbell, Lee Mynatt, Sam Scanlyn. Funeral services on August 25 at Drinnen Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

SIBLINGS James P. Bryan was the son of Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate, as were the other siblings, there being no half brothers or half sisters. Stewart Bryan was George Stewart Bryan, husband of Mattie Rymer. Mrs. Maggie Randolph was Margaret M. (Maggie) Bryan, widow of first Stewart Erastus Trotter and second Henry Randolph. Mrs. Delia Mynatt was the wife of Frederick Alonzo (Fred) Mynatt. Mrs. H.P. McCampbell was Minerva M. Bryan, widow of Horace Parrott McCampbell. I do not have any children listed for her. Some or all of my missing McCampbells (see below) are probably her children. Mrs. Lida Hopkins was Eliza/Lydia Bryan, husband of Fred Hopkins. Mrs. Mollie Hicks was Mary Viala (Mollie) Bryan, wife of John Anderson Hicks.

FLOWER GIRLS (I have never experienced first hand a funeral with flower girls. But it apparently used to be a standard custom. These were not five year old flower girls such as you might see at a wedding. Rather, they were teenage and adult women whose duty was to move the flowers from the funeral home to the church and to the cemetery, just as the pallbearers move the coffin.)

Lena Maude Bryan was the daughter of Emmert Oral Bryan and Ruby Priscilla Cox. She was the great grandniece of James P. Bryan.

Helen Pauline Bryan was the daughter of Frank M. Bryan and Stella Rickard. She was the great grandniece of James P. Bryan.

Barbra Lou Bryan was the daughter of Charles Milton (Mitt) Bryan and Faye Louise Coy. She was the grandniece of James P. Bryan.

Mary Bryan is a hard one to figure out. There are several Marys with a surname of Bryan before or after marriage who were first cousins once removed, second cousins once removed, etc. of James P. Bryan. However, I can find none who were grandnieces or great grandnieces. So my best guess is that this was Mary Sue Odom, wife of Fred R. Bryan. Fred R. Bryan was the grandnephew of James P. Bryan.

Willie Fayette Cate was the daughter of William Perry Cate and Carrie Rosemond Bull. She was the grandniece of James P. Bryan.

I have not been able to identify Beulah McCampbell.

Mildred B. Burkhart married Carl C. Reed about 1925. She was the daughter of Ernest U. Burkhart and Amy Ruth Mynatt. Mildred Burkhart Reed was the grandniece of James P. Bryan.

Geneva Imogene Underwood and Ruth Helen Underwood were daughters of John Amos (Amos) Underwood and Lola Helen Bryan. They were grandnieces of James P. Bryan.

I have not been able to identify Edna Storms.

Alice Fay Houk was the daughter of John Wesley Houk and Carrielee Douglass. She was the great grandniece of James P. Bryan.

Willie Josephine (Bill) Bryan was the daughter of Emmert Oral Bryan and Ruby Priscilla Cox. She married William Frank (Frank) Kyle. She was the grandniece of James P. Bryan.

I have not been able to identify Leth Roberts.

PALLBEARERS:

Thomas Eugene (Gene) Bryan and Pink (Pete) Bryan were the sons of John Greenwood/Greenberry Bryan and Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) McMahan. They were the nephews of James P. Bryan.

Charles Milton (Mitt) Bryan was the son of William Allen Bryan and Malissa E. Underwood. He was the nephew of James P. Bryan.

I have not been able to identify Gene or Walter McCampbell. I do have a Walter McCampbell in my data base. He was the husband of Ollie Free. Ollie Free was the daughter of Haskel Free and Rebecca Slaton. There were several Bryan-Slaton marriages, but I am nevertheless not sure of the link between the McCampbells and James P. Bryan.

P. Lee Mynatt was the son of Frederick Alonzo (Fred) Mynatt and Martha Cordelia (Delia) Bryan. He was the nephew of James B. Bryan.

Sam Scanlyn was probably either Sam H. Scandlyn Sr. or Sam H. Scandlyn Jr. Sam Sr. was the husband of Beulah Mynatt who was the daughter of Frederick Alonzo (Fred) Mynatt and Martha Cordelia (Delia) Bryan. Beulah Mynatt was the niece of James P. Bryan, and Sam Jr. was the grandnephew of James P. Bryan. I think it more likely that Sam Sr. was the pallbearer than Sam Jr.
