Kin Claim Negligence In Death of Jailed Man

The family of a former Fort Worth man who was found dead in jail at Centerville claimed Tuesday that authorities there had been negligent in failing to get a physician for him.

An autopsy showed that Grover C. Breckenridge, 42, a Houston resident for the last two years and a senior accountant for Pure Oil Company, died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Breckenridge was placed in jail at Buffalo Friday night. City Marshal Ben Bagley of Buffalo said he pleaded guilty to drunkenness and was fined $25.50.

The prisoner was transferred Saturday morning to Centerville to serve out the fine at $3 a day.

Breckenridge's mother, Mrs. Vontrice Breckenridge of 800 W. Lowden, said he did not contact her or other relatives during his week-end in jail. She said relatives here notified law officers that he was missing, and personally attempted to locate him.

Jailer Jim Moore found Breckenridge dead at 7 a. m. Monday.

Moore said Tuesday that the prisoner had seemed sleepy and had not eaten during his stay in jail. He said this was not unusual and that he had no reason to think the man was ill.

Another prisoner thought Breckenridge needed help and called out the window of the jail to a passerby Sunday, when Moore was off duty. The passerby had Deputy Sheriff Ivan Bell called to the jail.

The jailer said Bell asked Breckenridge what the matter was, and that the prisoner replied that he was just sleepy.

The physician who conducted the autopsy said Tuesday that Breckenridge had a lesion in the "silent" part of the brain, of a type that might well have produced drowsiness and weakness without other symptoms of a stroke such as paralysis. He said onlookers might fail to see anything seriously wrong in such a case.

Breckenridge was on the way to Fort Worth from Houston to spend a vacation. His wife and children had come to this area a week earlier and he was to join them.

A sister-in-law, Mrs. D. B. (Burk) Breckenridge of 7025 Culver, said her husband checked with two persons who had seen Breckenridge shortly before his arrest, and that both had said he had not been drinking.

Breckenridge was arrested near Buffalo. He had driven his car onto a dirt road and stopped. A passerby noticed that he had seemed drowsy or ill.

The family here contends Breckenridge did not know what he was doing when he reportedly pleaded guilty, and that because of the stroke he was unable to ask for a physician or to answer questions while in jail.

Breckenridge had been with Pure Oil for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Clebe [Cleve] and Tommy, and a daughter, Mary Breckenridge, all of Houston, and his mother and brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday in GauseWare Memorial Chapel with burial in Greenwood.
