Obituary, Rev. William B. Cobb
Cobb
- The Rev. Wm. B. Cobb, son of James M. and Mary Cobb, born in Lafayette County, Missouri, April 13, 1844. He was converted in a schoolhouse about three miles from the old homestead under the ministry of Rev. Warren M. Pitts. He was baptized and received into the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at McKendree Chapel by the Rev. R. A. Young, Presiding Elder of the Lexington District in 1858. He says, "My conversion was promoted by deep conviction of sin and was clear and satisfactory in me. The peace of God thrilled my boyish heart and immediately I sought to lead others to the same fountain of blessedness." He attended faithfully the services of the church, occupying a place in the "Amen corner" and listening attentively to the word. He was often called upon to make the morning prayer, which he appreciated very much, as means of grace. He never refused to do what he believed to be his duty except once. When urged by the Rev. Nathan Scarritt to take out license to preach in 1866, he refused, but expressed deep regret that he had done so. He spent twenty two years as an active layman in the church and was licensed to preach by the Wellington Quarterly Conference Feb. 21, 1886, L.W. Pearce pastor and J.L.D. Bievans P.E. He was recommended by the same quarterly conference for admission into the traveling connection and was admitted on trial by the annual conference that met at Marshal, Mo., in September, 1880, Bishop Keener presiding. He was ordained deacon by Bishop J.C. Granberry at Nevada in 1882 and elder by Bishop Parker at Jefferson City in 1884. During the twenty nine years of his active ministry he served many of the important charges of the conference and received 598 into the church. He was very anxious to serve out thirty in the active ministry, but failing health compelled him to ask for the superannuated relation in September, 1909. Since that time has made his home at Corder, his last charge, where he was loved by all. He was a man of large soul and deep piety. He was one of the best men it has ever been my privilege to know. When called upon to conduct the funeral service, the first thought that came into my mind was, I never heard a man speak unkindly of Brother Cobb or question his religious character, nor have I ever heard him speak harshly of unkindly of others. While a man of strong convictions, his heart was so full of the love of God and human souls that those whose sins he condemned respected him and most of them loved him. He was a "good man and full of the Holy Ghost," and his earnest, faithful ministry will abide with us as a precious memory and an incentive to zealous service for the Master. He belonged to a family of thirteen children of whom five sisters and one brother, the Rev. T.M. Cobb of Lexington, Mo., survive him. He was married three times -- first when he was about nineteen years old to Miss Ruth Ella Price of near Chapel Hill, Lafayette County; the second time to Mrs. Cloudsley, and in 1893 Miss Ella Swearington of Independence Mo., who is still living. He also leaves behind three children -- Mrs. Hereford, Kansas City, Kan.; William Cobb of La Monte, Mo., and Mrs. Nellie Pollock of Blairstown, Mo. Our sincerest sympathy is extended to those bereaved ones and especially to Mrs. Cobb, who has been confined to her bed for several months. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a true and faithful friend. "His name was like an ointment poured forth." During the last few months he was called upon to suffer a great deal and pass through dark shadows, but the shadows and trials have passed away and he is at rest. He "fought a good fight, he kept the faith" and has a title clear "to a Mansion in the sky". The funeral service was conducted by the writer, assisted by several of his brethren at Independence, MO., July 18, and the body laid to rest in the Independence Cemetery. May the Lord sustain the bereaved and stricken hearts until they shall meet him again in the home of the blest. F. M. Burton
