Newspaper article from the Adairs Odessa Mo. Democrat April 12, 1935:

Cobb Family to County in 1835.

This pioneer group came to this locality from Tennessee in
1835. One hundred years ago on April 17, 1835 James M. Cobb and his wife
of a few months, and a brother-in-law, Mr. Peters, arrived in
Lexington, Mo. The trip west had been made in a covered wagon,
crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis and following up the Missouri
to Lexington. One peculiar feature of the trip was that they didn't
use lines to drive the team, but took turns riding the horses and
leading the other horses.

Lexington at that time was a thriving river town, Greenton a
County Village. Higginsville, Odessa, and Bates City were unbroken
prairie with a few scattered farms.

Mr. Cobb rented a small farm four miles south of Lexington in
what was known as the Halls Lane. He lived there four years. In the
fall of 1839 he bought a tract of land from the U. S. government at
$1.25 an acre. The land he purchased lies southwest of Odessa and is
known as the McKendree neighborhood.

Mr. Cobb liked Missouri so well he wrote back to Tennessee for
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Cobb, his brother Alfred Cobb and
three sisters to come to the new county. When the came they also
bought land in the McKendree neighborhood.

The Cobbs have had a prominent part in development of the
southwest Lafayette County.

In religious beliefs, they were Methodists and the McKendree
Church was organized in the James M. Cobb home. Four of his sons
were Methodist preachers and a daughter and grandson were
missionaries from the Presbyterian Church to Japan. A son of Alfred
Cobb, the late John Cobb was for many years the president of the
Bank of Odessa. A great many of the descendants of the Cobb family
live in and around Odessa.

The original land that James M. Cobb bought from the
government has never passed out of the family. A grandson,
William Cobb Barnett, now lives on the homestead.
