Charlotte J. Shannon age 15 later married Thomas J. (Tom) Peters.  Charlotte seems to have had numerous nicknames, including Lottie, Lollie, and Sharlley.  Charlotte was the daughter of Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls.  Wright Shannon was the son of Andrew Shannon and Elizabeth.

Rebecca, Mahala, and Zerelda were Wright Shannon's sisters.  Tabitha seems too young to have been a sibling, and her exact relationship to the family is unknown.

Thomas J. (Tom) Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Tom was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

There is a mystery concerning Charlotte J. Shannon.  One of her sons was William Wright Peters.  The death certificate of William Wright Peters lists his parents as Tom Peters and Lollie Voyls.  Charlotte (Lollie) Shannon was born about 1845, and Wright Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls were married in 1849.  So it is not 100% certain that Wright Shannon was Charlotte's birth father.

I'm not aware of any direct connection between West W. Ellis and any of my Anderson County ancestors.  Indeed, I don't even have him recorded in my database.  However, I run into his name all the time while researching my ancestors.  The only connection may be that he lived close by.  I'm just recording this census entry on speculation that it might someday prove useful.

The census entry says that West Ellis was married within the year.  But there is no spouse listed.  Also, West W. Ellis was married twice, first in 1840 and second in 1861.  So the census must be in error in stating that he was married within the year.

Scarbrough was the son of James Scarbrough and Anna (Annie) Rice.

Of more importance to my research, Chesley J. Scarbrough was the second husband my second great grandmother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England.  Sarah Yarnell died in 1884.  Vestie's first husband William Cole died 1873/1880.  Vestie and Chesley were married in 1885, and they had no children.

In 1860 this family was living on 174 acres they had inherited from my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  This census entry valued the land at $550.

The land was involved in an 1888 lawsuit that provides a great deal of insight into Cross family relationships.  The land was located in a gap in Pine Ridge and extended north from the gap along the East Fork of Poplar Creek.  In modern day times, the land could be described as being where Scarbrough Road goes through the gap in the ridge and intersects with Illinois Avenue, just north of the east portal of the Y-12 plant.  For the most part, the creek itself is now carried in culverts under parking lots at strip malls, restaurants, and grocery stores.  Illinois Avenue follows the route of the creek, even though the creek itself is no longer very visible in its culverts.

Elizabeth Cross age 50 probated the will of William Cross in 1845.  She was 45 year old in 1850, so she got a lot younger between 1850 and 1860.  I don't know exactly how she was related to William.  The possibilities seem to be that she was a daughter who never married, that she was a second wife who was much younger than William was, or that she was a widowed daughter-in-law.  It seems most likely that she was a daughter who never married.

Mary Cross age 47 was an heir of William Cross.  I don't know exactly how she was related to William.  The possibilities seem to be that she was a daughter who never married, that she was a much younger second wife, or that she was a widowed daughter-in-law.  It seems most likely that she was a daughter who never married.

I have listed Amanda Melvina Cross age 36 as the daughter of William Cross.  Amanda Melvina was too old to have been the daughter of Mary.  I suppose she could have been the daughter of Elizabeth.  But it seems more likely that she was the daughter of William.  She apparently died before the 1888 lawsuit and therefore was not mentioned in the lawsuit.  But she did pay taxes on William Cross's land in her later years.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Emilia Jane (Jane) Cross age 25 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 47 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Jane was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.

John H. Cross age 17 wasn't mentioned in the 1888 lawsuit.  He apparently died before between 1860 and 1870, which was many years before the lawsuit.  Because Jane age 25 and Froney age 15 were Mary's children, it seems likely that John H. probably also was Mary's child.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Safrona C. (Froney) Cross age 15 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 47 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Froney was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.  Froney married a William Scarbrough in 1877 in Morgan County.  This particular William Scarbrough was the son of Albert Allen Scarbrough and Mary Ervin, and appears not to have been a member of the Scarbrough family from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Franklin P. Cross age 7 is a mystery.  It's possible that he was the son of Elizabeth, Mary, Amanda Melvina, or Emilia Jane.  If so, then he probably was an out-of-wedlock child because there was no man in the home in either the 1850 or the 1860 census.  However, I think the mostly likely possibility is that Franklin was the son of Elijah Cross Jr. and Mary (Polly) Malone of Sullivan County.  Elijah Cross Jr. was the nephew of William Cross the drummer boy, and would have been the first cousin of Elizabeth, Mary, etc. (assuming that they were all daughters of William).  Elijah Cross Jr. died in about 1855/58, and I cannot in general find his children in the 1860 census nor in the 1870 census.  They showed up again in the 1880 census in Sullivan County, living as brothers and sisters all in the same household, and Frank Cross was 26 years old at that time.  It makes sense that the children of Elijah Cross Jr. might have been sent to live with other family members for a while after his death.

Preastley King (King) Scarbrough age 35 was the son of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough and Elizabeth Nunnley.  Also, he was the father of Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough who married Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.  Ross Scarbrough was not born until 1864, and hence was not enumerated in the 1860 census.  King Scarbrough's wife was Nancy Temple Smith age 30.

Cordie Cole was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole who married Alva Edward Peters.  Ross and Cordie were known as Uncle Ross and Aunt Cordie in the family.

Nancy Leath age 17 was the daughter of Willis Leath and Ruth (Ruthy) Keith who were living nearby in dwelling number 331 (above).  I'm not aware of any particular connection between Willis Leath and the Scarbrough or Peters family, other than the fact that they were neighbors.  However, there are major connections between Willis Leath and my Cross family, so I have researched him extensively.

I'm interested in Nancy C. Henry Peters Jr. and Jane England were my fourth great grandparents.  Henry was the son of of my fifth great grandparents Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte.  Even though this census entry says he was born in Tennessee, Henry Jr. was almost certainly born in Virginia before the family moved to Tennessee in 1797.

Jane England probably belongs to one of my England families, but I can't yet figure out who she was.

I have three Peters lines.  Two of them lead back to Thomas Peters and one of them leads back to Thomas's brother Henry Jr.

Katherine most likely was Henry Jr.'s sister.  Another possibility is that she was Henry Jr.'s widowed sister-in-law.

James Messamore age 60 was the son of my fourth great grandparents William/Wilhelm Messamore and Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May age 80.  As such, James was the brother of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Sarah (Sary) Heath age 57 was the daughter of William Heath.

The census enumerator did not follow the directions in the sense that he did not mark each person in the family who attended school in the last year.  Rather, he indicated how many family members attended school in the last year.  It was only one person, whom I assume was Thomas.

My fourth great grandmother Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May age 80 was the daughter of Thomas May Sr. and Maria Catherine Emerich.  At the time of the 1860 census, Peggy was the widow of her second husband John Dickey.

Joseph A. Bray was my second great grandfather, born 11 Dec 1849 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Joseph was the son of Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.

Edward Payne Bray was the son of John Bray and Jane.

Edward Payne Bray's second wife was Martha Patsy Sweet.  The exact date of Anna F. Messamore's death is not known.  Edward Payne Bray and Martha Patsy Sweet were married on 12 Mar 1855.  My best guess is that Jane Bray age 5 was the last child of Anna F. Messamore and that Elijah Walker Bray age 2 was the first child of Martha Patsy Sweet.

Milton's father was William Carroll Altum.  I don't know Urany's surname.

Caswell P. Smith died in the Civil War on 25 May 1864 at the Andersonville, Georgia prison camp.

Elijah J. Cross paid taxes and apparently lived in Anderson County on land that had been owned by William Cross the drummer.  Elijah was a key player in an 1888 lawsuit between Cross family members over William's land.

Jasper Hendrix was elected constable of Dist. 8 in 1856.  Constable bonds were required in order to indemnify the county in the event the constable's duties were not performed correctly.  In particular, the constable was the chief tax collector for the Civil District in which he resided.  In the event that the constable collected tax money and didn't turn it in to the county, the bondsmen would be responsible for the money.

Jasper Hendrix's bondsmen were himself, George W. Leath, Jesse C. Cross, and Jasper's father Alexander Hendrix.

Jesse C. Cross was the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Jesse was the brother of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.  I do not know what connection there might have been between Jesse C. Cross and Jasper Hendrix except possibly just that they were friends.

George W. Leath was the brother-in-law of Jesse's sister Nancy Ann Cross who married Adison A. Leath.

Parthena Messamore and John Altum were married 16 Oct 1858 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Parthena is a bit of a mystery, but I believe she was probably the daughter of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  James and Sarah had a daughter the same age as Parthena who was listed in the 1850 census as Leetheny, which was probably an alternative for Partheny.  There were no other Messamore women in Anderson County who were the right age to have been Parthena.
