John H. Bray was the son of my third great grandparents Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.  As such, John was the brother of my second great grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray.

John's wife was Margaret Messamore, daughter of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  As such, Margaret Messamore was the niece of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Therefore, John H. Bray and Margaret Messamore were first cousins who married.

Marcellus Longmire was born 23 Dec 1821 in Sweats Ford, Campbell County, Tennessee.  He died 5 May 1892 in Union County, Tennessee.  He was buried in the Old Andersonville Cemetery, Anderson County, Tennessee.  Leah Murry Huff was his second wife.  She was born 28 Mar 1818, died 30 Nov 1897 in Anderson County, Tennessee, and was buried at the Old Andersonville Cemetery, Anderson County, Tennessee.  I don't know what the relationship was between the Longmire family and the Brays.

There is no apparent connection between this Cole family and my Cole family.  My second great grandfather William Cole was born about 1846.  He married my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England in Anderson County in 1865, and they were enumerated in the 1870 census in Knox County.

This William C. Cole married Susannah C. Duncan on 28 Feb 1866 in Anderson County.

Winny was the widow of William Carroll Altum.  I do not know Winny's surname.

Milton T. Altum married Minerva Adeline (Adeline) Bray who was the daughter of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray and Edward's second wife Martha Patsy Sweet.  As such, Adeline was the half-sister of my second great grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray.  Milton and Adeline were married in 1874 and divorced in 1878, and the divorce decree restored Adeline's name to Bray.

John N. Carter was Winny's son-in-law, having married Mary F. Altum.

Robert Milligan was the husband of Malinda Messamore.  Malinda was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents William/Wilhelm Messamore and Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May.  As such, Malinda was the sister of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Malinda died 1850/1853 and Robert Milligan married second to Rebecca Sweet about 1853.  Of the children listed in the 1870 census entry for the family, only George Milligan was the child of Malinda.  Malinda's other children had moved out prior to 1870.

Susannah Yarnell was the daughter of Joel Yarnell and Nancy, and the widow of William F. Peters who died about 1864.  William F. Peters was the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  As such, William was the brother of my third great grandmother Zipporah Peters and he was also the brother of my third great grandmother Jane (Jennie) Peters.

The names of the children don't match up quite as well as I would like with other records I have.  But in any case, Mima J. was Jemima Jane Peters who was born 14 Sep 1852.  James H. was James Harvey Peters who was born 29 May 1856.  Sarah E. was apparently Emily A. (Millie) Peters who I have listed as born 18 Feb 1860.  Emily was enumerated in the 1860 census, so she wasn't born in 1863 as suggested by the 1870 census.  And she didn't die before the 1870 census because she was married in 1879.  If Emily had died before the 1870 census, then Sarah E. could be a diffent daughter who really was born about 1863, but Emily was married in 1879.  So it appears that the full name was Sarah Emily A. (Millie) Peters.  Her marriage record lists her name as M. A. Peters, which are the initials for Millie A. Peters.

I don't know for sure if we should call the younger James M. May "Jr." or not because I don't know if his middle name was Madison.  But in any case, he was married on 30 Aug 1866 to Mary J. Taylor.  So Mary J. age 20 was the wife of the younger James, not the daughter of Madison May and Fannie Smith.

Thomas Harvey Messamore was the son of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  As such, he was the nephew of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Thomas Harvey Messamore married Elizabeth A. (Betsy) Webster on 30 May 1868.  Betsy died on 20 May 1869 and Thomas was living with Betsy's parents at the time of the census.  Thomas and Betsy had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Messamore who was born 13 Apr 1869 and who died as an infant.  The exact date of the infant's death is not known, but it was apparently before this census entry.  Also, Betsy Webster didn't "die in childbirth" exactly since she died about five weeks after her daughter was born.  But she certainly could have died from complications of childbirth.

Thomas Harvey Messamore married second to Susan Elizabeth Long on 18 Sep 1870 in Anderson County, Tennessee, shortly after this census entry was recorded.

Betsy Webster's parents were John Webster and Elizabeth G. Anderson.

In 1870 this family was living on 174 acres they had inherited from my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  This census entry valued the land at $700.

The land was involved in an 1888 lawsuit that provides a great deal of insight into Cross family relationships.  The land was located in a gap in Pine Ridge and extended north from the gap along the East Fork of Poplar Creek.  In modern day times, the land could be described as being where Scarbrough Road goes through the gap in the ridge and intersects with Illinois Avenue, just north of the east portal of the Y-12 plant.  For the most part, the creek itself is now carried in culverts under parking lots at strip malls, restaurants, and grocery stores.  Illinois Avenue follows the route of the creek, even though the creek itself is no longer very visible in its culverts.

Mary Cross age 51 was an heir of William Cross.  I don't know exactly how she was related to William.  The possibilities seem to be that she was a daughter who never married, that she was a much younger second wife, or that she was a widowed daughter-in-law.  It seems most likely that she was a daughter who never married.

I have listed Amanda Melvina Cross age 48 as the daughter of William Cross.  Amanda Melvina was too old to have been the daughter of Mary.  I suppose she could have been the daughter of Elizabeth.  But it seems more likely that she was the daughter of William.  She apparently died before the 1888 lawsuit and therefore was not mentioned in the lawsuit.  But she did pay taxes on William Cross's land in her later years.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Emilia Jane (Jane) Cross age 31 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 51 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Jane was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Safrona C. (Froney) Cross age 24 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 51 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Froney was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.  Froney married a William Scarbrough in 1877 in Morgan County.  This particular William Scarbrough was the son of Albert Allen Scarbrough and Mary Ervin, and appears not to have been a member of the Scarbrough family from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

William L. Brooks and Louisa Leath are connected to my family because they were heirs to the land of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  Louisa's brother Adison A. Leath married William Cross's son Nancy Ann Cross.  Adison died between 1860 and 1865, and subsequent tax records show that Willis Leath paid the taxes on the land that had been inherited by his daughter-in-law Nancy Ann Cross.  There is no deed that shows that Willis Leath assumed ownership of the land, but apparently he did.  After Willis Leath's death in 1867, interest in the land apparently passed to William L. Brooks and Louisa Leath.

Joseph B. Crozier and Thomas B. Crozier were probably ex-slaves that had been owned either by the Crozier family or by the Cross family.

Mark Marshall married Arvazine Cross on 13 Jun 1870.  He was enumerated twice in 1870.  Even though Mark was married prior to when this census entry was made, the enumerator apparently was faithful to the official census date 1 Jun 1870.  So Mark was listed here without his new wife.

Arvazine Cross was the daughter of my third great grandparents Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters.  As such, she was the sister of my second great grandmother Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross.

Mark and Arvazine Marsall were mentioned in an 1888 lawsuit Elijah Cross et.al. vs. Joseph Cross et.al. because Arvazine was an heir to the land of her grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

Although it has nothing directly to do with my family history, I note in passing that John Blair Tadlock was the grandfather of Taylor B. Tadlock.  Taylor Tadlock was a peer of my grandparents, and I knew him fairly well because he attended the same church that we did.  Also, one of Taylor Tadlock's sons married one of my mother's sisters.  Taylor was the son of Samuel Sevier Tadlock, enumerated in this census entry rather quaintly as Severy.  John Blair Tadlock's wife was Jane Walker Taylor, so the Taylor Tadlock that I knew was named for his grandmother.

Henry Clark (Clark) Peters age 49 was the son of either Thomas Peters or of Thomas's brother Henry Peters Jr.  Both Thomas and Henry Jr.  were my fourth great grandfathers.  I am descended from three of their children through cousin marriages, namely John W. Peters, Zipporah Peters, and Jane Peters.

John W. was the son of Henry Jr., and Zipporah and Jane were daughters of Thomas.  Because Clark was the son of either Thomas or of Henry Jr., he was the brother of John W. and the first cousin of Zipporah and Jane, or vice versa.

Perlina Ann Shilling age 45 was the daughter of Buford Shilling and Ann Hayes.  Perlina was either 1/4 or 1/2 Cherokee through her mother, leading to the statement I have sometimes heard that "the Peters have Indian blood".  This particular line of Peters certainly did, but I do not believe that my Peters line did.

Chesley J. Scarbrough age 46 was the son of James Scarbrough and Anna (Annie) Rice.  His wife was Sarah Yarnell age 48.  Sarah married first Robert I. F. James Alexander Scarbrough age 22 was known as Alec or Alex.  Robert Houston Scarbrough age 15 was Wallace Smith's grandfather, and Robert's stories to Wallace were the source of much information about this family.

Chesley married second my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England (also her second marriage).  I am descended from Vesta's first husband William Cole.  But because of her second marriage, Vesta is remembered in the family either as Grandma Vestie or as Grandma Scarbrough rather than as Grandma Cole.

Diggs.

Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon, Rebecca Shannon, and Mahala Shannon were brother, sister, and sister, respectively.  They were siblings of Preston Shannon from dwelling number 52 next door.  They were all children of Andrew Shannon and Elizabeth.

Charlotte J. Shannon age 24 later married Thomas J. (Tom) Peters.  Charlotte seems to have had numerous nicknames, including Lottie, Lollie, and Sharlley.  Charlotte was the daughter of Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls.  Sidney died between 1860 and 1870, so Wright Shannon was a widower in 1870.

Thomas J. (Tom) Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Tom was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

There is a mystery concerning Charlotte J. Shannon.  One of her sons was William Wright Peters.  The death certificate of William Wright Peters lists his parents as Tom Peters and Lollie Voyls.  Charlotte (Lollie) Shannon was born about 1845, and Wright Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls were married in 1849.  So it is not 100% certain that Wright Shannon was Charlotte's birth father.

In the 1880 census, Sallie Cole was living with Preston Shannon and Ida Cole was living with John Scarbrough.  I don't presently have house numbers for these two families in 1880, but in 1870 they were adjacent.  They were probably adjacent in 1880 as well.  The item in common is a Peters connection.  Sallie and Ida were granddaughters of Jane Peters who married John England.  Preston Shannon's third wife was Sarah Emily Peters, daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  John Scarbrough's wife was Mary A. Peters, daughter of Sarah (Sallie) England and Thomas Peters.  Sarah Emily Peters and Mary A. Peters were sisters.

Mary A. Peters was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  Ida Cole age 11 was living with this family in 1880, suggesting that Ida Cole's grandmother Jane Peters was the sister of Mary A. Peters.

John W. Scarbrough was the son of James Scarbrough and Annie Rice.

Anna L. Peters appears to have been the daughter of Henry Clark Peters and Perlina Shilling.  Henry Clark Peters was Mary's brother.  So Anna L. Peters would have been Mary's niece.

Sarah (Sallie) England age 84 was the widow of Thomas Peters in 1870.

Mary J. Peters, Charles Nelson Peters, and Amanda J. Peters were children of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby SmithJohn W. Peters died in the Civil War and Ruby Smith died in 1869.  James A. Samsel and Mary J. Peters were taking care of Mary's younger siblings.

James A. Samsel and Mary J. Peters were married 14 Sep 1865 in Anderson County, TN.  We are looking at part of the post Civil War baby boom.  James served in Civil War in the same unit as Mary's brother John Henry Peters.

James A. Samsel appeared frequently as a witness or signatory on various legal documents associated with my Peters family.  I do not know who his parents were.  I cannot find him in the 1860 census.  There was a James A. Sampsell age 15 in the 1850 census in Carter County, Tennessee.  He was apparently orphaned and was living with the Hess family as an apprentice blacksmith.  He was probably the same James A. Samsel who later appeared in Anderson County.

Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross age 26 was my second great grandmother.  She was the daughter of Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters.

The entry looks a little strange.  Asma doesn't look much like Hulda or like Asberine, but there is no doubt this is the correct entry.  All the ages are correct, and Asberine's sister was living next door.

I have seen Asberine's name listed as Asby and as Asba.  So I believe that Asma was some sort of approximation to Asba or to Asby when the enumerator really didn't know how to spell her name.

William Daily Peters age 3 was the first child of John H. Peters and Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross.  The first daughter was Mary O. Peters who was born in 1867 and who died in 1868.  The family bible has the second daughter listed as Sarah J. Peters born 23 Feb 1869.  This assumes that the bible has been transcribed correctly.  Isabel Peters and Sarah J. Peters must have been same person, and her name was surely Sarah Isabel Peters.  The family bible probably should have been transcribed as Sarah I. Peters.
