This census entry is very faded and very difficult to read.  For example, I am unable to determine Richard's occupation.

Mary E. Yarnell age 8 married Fred Messamore in 1913.  Fred was the son of William T. Messamore and Catherine J. Lacey, the grandson of James Messamore Jr. and Susannah/Susan Ann (Annie) Altum, and the great grandson of James Messamore Sr. and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  James Messamore Sr. was the brother of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Mary E. Yarnell was the daughter of Samuel V. Yarnell and Sarah L. E. France.  Samuel and Sarah were enumerated in the 1900 census with their other children.  It is not clear why Mary was enumerated with her grandparents.

I believe this family was from the Carter County line of Peters.  This line was either not connected to my line, or else was very distantly connected.  I believe that this was the family of Thomas Sithard Peters b. about 1850 who married Mary (Mollie) Hamilton.  Thomas was the son of Alfred Crook Peters and Nancy Berry, and was descended from Christian/Christopher Peters.  It is at least possible that Henry Peters Sr. and Tobias Peters Sr. of Anderson County, Tennessee were related to this Christian/Christopher Peters.

Alfred Demarcus Peters was the son of Tobias Peters Jr. and Martha Miranda (Marthy) Mays.

All my Peters lines go back to my fifth great grandfather Henry Peters Sr. rather than to Tobias Peters Sr., so I am not aware of any connection between Alfred Demarcus Peters and any of my ancestors.

Alfred's first wife was Florence Childress.  Florence Childress died shortly after the 1900 census, and Alfred married Rhoda Florence Walls in 1901.  It's important not to get the two Florences mixed up.

James Henry Yarber was the son of Henry Clay (Clinton) Yarbrough/Yarber and Sarah Elizabeth Fox.  His wife was Mattie E. Rains.

My interest in the family is that Henry Clay (Clinton) Yarbrough/Yarber was the stepfather of Caledonia D. (Callie) Evans who married James Edward (Jim) Messamore.  So James Henry Yarber and Callie Evans were stepbrother and stepsister.

Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Prosise was the son of Thomas Dudley Prosise and Rebecca Mabry Rowland.  Frank Prosise was the husband of Jemima Jane (Jane) Peters.  I have Jane's date of death listed as 22 Oct 1885, but if Samuel M. Prosise's date of birth is correct in this census entry then Jane must have died on 22 Oct 1886 instead.

Jemima Jane (Jane) Peters was the daughter of William F. Peters and Susan Yarnell.  William was the son my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  As such, William was the brother of two of my third great grandmothers, Zipporah Peters and Jane Peters.

The birth places are transcribed correctly, but Jasper's birth places must have been TN VA TN like the rest of the children.  There must have been an error on the part of the enumerator.

Thomas H. Messamore was the son of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  As such, he was the nephew of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore who married Edward Payne Bray.  Thomas's wife in 1900 was Cordelia A. Weaver, who apparently was not related to Cordelia A. Weaver who married William Dailey (Will) Peters.  It appears to me that Thomas's places of birth should be TN VA TN rather than TN TN VA.  It was his father rather than his mother who was born in Virginia.

I'm confident that Mahala A. (Haley) Lively was really 33 years old in 1900 rather than 30.  So she was married at age 15 rather than at age 12.

James F. Cross was the son of William Cross and Jane (Jennie) Black.  As such, he was the grandson of Brittain Cross and Mary (Polly) Parks.  I often refer to James' father as William the lawyer, in part because he was a lawyer and in part to distinguish him from my fourth great grandfather William Cross who was a Revolutionary War drummer boy.

Mary D. McCallum was the daughter of Daniel McCallum.

There is no proven relationship between Brittain Cross on the one hand and my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy on the other hand.  There are some who believe that Brittain was William the drummer's son.  It seems certain that Brittain and William the drummer were related, but I doubt very much that they were son and father.

Joseph L. Pyatt bought the land that was in dispute in the 1888 lawsuit between Cross family members.  The land was sold at auction at the court house door.

Cross was the daughter of of my third great grandparents Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters.  As such, she was the sister of my second great grandmother Hulda Asberine Cross who married John Henry Peters.  Sarah E. Cross's children were first cousins of Hulda Asberine Cross's children, including my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters who was living in dwelling number 7 in 1900.

My aunt Lucille Wright (nee Eva Lucille (Lucille) Peters) remembers Calvin and Mark Scarbrough visiting the home of Alva Peters, who was Lucille's Grandpa Peters.

Alva Edward Peters age 29 was the son of John Henry Peters and Hulda Asberine (Asberine or Asby) Cross age 54.  Sallie J. Cole age 29 was the daughter of William Cole and Vesta Clay EnglandAlva and Sallie were my great grandparents (my mother's Grandpa and Grandma Peters).  Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters age 5 was my mother's father.  Elsie Cordelia Peters (Aunt Elsie) age 1 later married Samuel Mabry (Sam) Letsinger (Uncle Sam).

John Henry Peters had died in 1890, and Alva's mother and three of his siblings were living with the family.  I really don't know if Alva was living in his mother's house, or if Asberine was living in her son's house (probably the latter).

None of Alva's siblings who were still living in the home in 1900 ever married, and they all died fairly young.  John W. Peters age 23 died 16 Dec 1900.  Martha Ethel (Ethel) Peters age 12 died 17 Jun 1907.  Henry Hutsell (Hutsell) Peters age 10 died 25 Mar 1920.

My grandfather Lester Peters is said to have looked exactly like his Uncle Hutsell.  Hutsell owned a fiddle which was passed down to Lester when Hutsell died, and my grandfather played the fiddle at dances.  The fiddle is still in the family.

The census enumerator Calvin H. Scarbrough was Alva's first cousin.

Ida Rhoda Cole age 31 is remembered by my family as Aunt Ida or as Ida Wells.  She was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole from dwelling number 7 next door.  The first two Wells children in this census entry were sons of Phillip Hancher Wells age 40 and his first wife Sarah J. Minge.  Sarah died in 1889.

Phillip Hancher Wells was the son of Jesse Jackson Wells and Susan Magdalene Johnson.  Phillip and Ida were married 21 Sep 1890 in Knox County.

My second great grandmother Vesta Clay England age 60 was the mother of Ida Rhoda Cole from this household, and of Sallie Jane Cole from dwelling number 7 next door.  Vesta had four daughters with my second great grandfather William Cole -- Ida, Rhoda, Sallie, and Mollie.  I do not know if the fifth child, the one who was no longer living, was a child of William Cole or of Vesta's second husband Chesley J. ScarbroughVesta's tombstone says that she was born 10 Apr 1841, but for a variety of reasons (including this census entry), I believe she was actually born 10 Apr 1840.

Vesta was living with her daughter and her son-in-law in 1900 because her second husband Chesley J. Scarbrough had died 1 Dec 1899.

Samuel Mabry (Sam) Letsinger age 6 later married Elza Cordelia (Elzie) Peters, sister of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters.  After the Great Depression hit, my grandfather and Uncle Sam Letsinger bought adjacent farms in Anderson County and moved back out into the country from Knoxville where they were living in the city.  They figured that even if they were poor during the Depression, at least they could feed their families by farming.  Both farms were purchased from Uncle Sam's parents.

Uncle Sam's parents were William Johnson Letsinger and Elizabeth Frances (Fannie) Meade.

Amanda (Manda) Bray was the daughter of John Jacob (Jake) Bray and Winnie West who were living next door.  Jake was the nephew of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.

Manda's husband was Michael Seiber.  Many of the spellings in Dist. 10 of Anderson County in 1900 were extremely creative.

There seems to be considerable confusion about the wives and children of Michael Seiber.  For sure, he married Elizabeth Byrge on 14 Sep 1878.  For sure, he married Amanda (Manda) Bray on 17 Aug 1898.  In the 1900 census, Rosa Seiber was Manda Bray's daughter and the remaining children were children of Elizabeth Byrge.  However, there are also reported marriages to Mandy West in 1900 and to Bessie West date unknown.  I have not been able to substantiate either of these marriages.  At the present time, I believe that Michael Seiber was married only twice.

Wilson W. Bray and Susanah Phillips were married on on 6 Oct 1899 in Anderson County.  There is considerable mystery about Wilson.  He used both the Bray surname and the Taylor surname.  His marriage record listed his surname as Bray.  His death certificate listed his surname as Bray.  The 1910 and 1920 censuses listed his surname as Bray.

Wilson's mother was Nancy Ann Bray.  Nancy married Samuel James Taylor on 8 Apr 1880 in Anderson County.  The couple raised three children: Sarah E., Wilson, and William.  Sarah and Wilson were born before the marriage, and William was born after the marriage.  It is not clear if Samual James Taylor was the father of some, all, or none of the children.  On Wilson's death certificate, his parents were listed as "don't know".  On William Taylor's death certificate, William's parents were listed as Sam Taylor and Nancy A. Bray.

Nancy Ann Bray was the daughter of Joseph H. Bray and Sarah L. Duncan.  As such, Nancy was the niece of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.

I believe this is Joshua Bray and Margaret J. Lamar who were married 22 Oct 1881 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  There is obviously a discrepancy in the marriage date, because the census says the couple has been married for 12 years.  So my guess may be wrong.  In any case, I do not know how this Joshua Bray fits in with my Bray family.

This may be Joshua F. Bray, son of Joshua J. Bray and Anne M. (Annie) Hall.  Perry Bray was living nearby, and he was a son of Joshua J. Bray and Anne M. (Annie) Hall.  The age of Joshua F. Bray is close to the age of this Joshua, but the age is not exact; I have Joshua F. Bray's birth date listed as about 1839.  Joshua F. Bray married Matilda Daniel on 19 Nov 1864 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  I have not found Joshua nor Matilda in the 1870 or the 1880 census.  I do not know when Matilda died.

Samuel Tobias Peters was the son of Tobias Peters Jr. and Martha Miranda (Marthy) Mays.  Sarah Catherine Rogers was the daughter of James Larson White Rogers and Elizabeth Wilson.  All my Peters lines go back to my fifth great grandfather Henry Peters Sr. rather than to Tobias Peters Sr., so I am not aware of any connection between Samuel Tobias Peters and any of my ancestors.

Robert A. Peters was the son of my second great grandparents John Henry Peters and Hulda Asberine Cross.  As such, he was the brother of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.

Mollie J. Cole was the daughter of my second great grandparents William Cole and Vesta Clay England.  As such, she was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole who married Alva Edward Peters.

The children of Robert A. Peters and Mollie J. Cole were double first cousins of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters Sr.

Robert A. Peters and Mollie J. Cole were second cousins who married because both of them were great grandchildren of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.

William Elmer Peters was known as Elmer.  This census entry is the only record I have found of his first name.  Jenetta N. Peters was known as Nettie.  This census entry is the only record I have found of her middle initial, and I don't know what her middle name was.  Menta Reese Peters was known as Reese or Recie.  This census entry is the only record I have found of her first name.
