Robert Love Peters was the son of Newton J. Peters and Margaret Ann Lane.  There is no known connection between Newton J. Peters and my Peters family of Anderson County, Tennessee.  However, I am mindful of the fact that several descendants of Tobias Peters Sr. were named Newton Peters.

Hallie Winfield Prater was the daughter of George William Prater and Elizabeth Sara Brooks.

This one is going to be hard to figure out.  The issue is not that the given name is hard to transcribe.  The issue is that the given name is completely missing.  A number of boarders were living in the house, and the head of the household was Marcus Summers.

John Greenwood/Greenberry Bryan age 57 was the son of my third great grandparents Peter Hubbard Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, John was the brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Allen) Bryan.

John's wife was Sarah Elizabeth (Sallie) McMahan age 47.  I do not know who her parents were.  This census entry lists 6 of Sallie's 8 children.

Georgia Bryan age 22 married Horace Mouray Perrin.  I do not know why Georgia was living with her parents rather than with her husband.  The census enumerator failed to note that Eugene, Pink, Eunice, and Nellie should have had their surname listed as Bryan rather than as Perrin.

I do not know who George J. Hicks and his wife Loran were.  They were probably boarders, but the enumerator did not list them as boarders.

Joseph E. Fraley later married Mollie I. Cole.  It was the second marriage for both Joseph and Mollie.

Mollie I. Cole was the daughter of my second great grandparents William Cole and Vesta Clay England.  As such, Mollie was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole.  Aunt Mollie married Robert A. Peters and Sallie married my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.  Robert and Alva were brothers, so Mollie's children with Robert A. Peters were double first cousins of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters.

Bayard Earl Yadon 14 married my grandfather's sister, Ella Mae Peters, in 1923.  I believe that "Bayard" is the correct spelling of his given name, but the family pronounces it "Baird".

Bayard's parents were Jasper David Yadon ge 50 and Mary Elizabeth McDonald age 50.

John H. Peters age 52 was the son of Francis Asbury (Frank) Peters and Sarah Jane (Jane) Scarbrough, and the grandson of my fourth great grandparents Henry Peters Jr. and Jane England.  As such, Frank was the brother of my third great grandfather John W. Peters.  Also, this John H. Peters was the first cousin of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

Ellen F. Evans age 47 was the daughter of George Evans and Susana.  Ellen and John were married on 29 Aug 1881 in Anderson County.

Pearl Peters age 18 who married Elley Owens was the daughter of John H. Peters and Ellen F. Evans, even though the census enumerator listed Elley and Pearl as boarder and wife rather than as son-in-law and daughter.

Marcus A. (Mark) Scarbrough age 34 was the son of William V. (Will) Scarbrough and Sarah E. Cross, and the granddaughter of my third great grandparents Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters.  As such, Sarah was the sister of my second great grandmother Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross who married my second great grandfather, the aforementioned John Henry Peters.  Mark was the first cousin of my great grandfather Alva Edward (Edward) Peters, and Mark visited Alva's house on a regular basis.

Amy Etta Buckner age 13 was the first wife of my grandfather Ernest Lester Peters Sr.  Amy was the mother of my mother's half sister Eva Lucille (Lucille) Peters.  Aunt Lucille was named for her mother's sister Eva M. Buckner age 9.

Amy's parents were Robert D. Buckner age 37 and Martha Jane Parks age 37.

Robert D. Buckner was the son of James H. Buckner and Sally Ann McPhetridge.  Robert's parents were living next door in dwelling number 2.

Martha Jane Parks was the daughter of Tennessee (Ten) Parks and Olivia (Ollie) Stone age 62.  So Robert and Martha had one of their parents living with them, two of their parents living next door, and the fourth parent was deceased.

Martha Jane Parks had borne three children of whom two were still living.  The child who died was Selma Buckner who was born in Sep 1897.  I don't know the exact date of Selma's death, but it was between 1900 and 1910.

James H. Buckner age 56 and Sarah A. Logan and that she and Enoch were married on 19 Nov 1908 in Knox County.

Leah Slaton was the daughter of Joseph Flippin Slaton and Mary Elizabeth Bell.  Joseph Flippin Slaton was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin.  As such, Joseph was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.

Leah Slaton m.(1) Andrew J. (Andy) Williams, m.(2) John Wesley Strange, and m.(3) James L. Lane.  Bessie Katherine Strange was the daughter of John Wesley Strange and Leah Slaton.  Bessie's name was probably Elizabeth, and she was probably named for her grandmother Mary Elizabeth Bell.

The 1850 and 1860 census entries for Joseph Flippin Slaton say that he was born in Virginia.  He died before the 1870 census.  He was probably born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and was "from North Carolina" at the time he moved to Tennessee.  Pittsylvania County, Virginia is right across the state line from Surry County, North Carolina and from Stokes County, Carolina.  There are records for my Slaton family in all three counties, and it is hard to know for sure in which of the three counties any particular family member was born.  Leah probably understood her father to be "from North Carolina", and therefore reported incorrectly that her father's birth place was North Carolina rather than Virginia.

Faye was the daughter of an unknown Mr. Coy and Edna Mae Bowman age 30.  Mr. Coy apparently died between 1906 and 1910.  The family moved from Ohio to Tennessee about 1906.  I don't know for sure where they lived in Ohio, but Edna Bowman was born in Cincinnati.  Edna was the daughter of Robert Burns Bowman and Ella Jane Simmonds.

George Steward (Steward) Bryan ag 39 was the son of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, Steward was the brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Steward Bryan's first wife was Mattie Rymer.  Mattie died in 1904.  George Steward (Steward) Bryan's second wife was Martha Ella (Ella) Elmore age 33.

I have been having great difficulty identifying records for the family subsequent to Mattie's death.  Steward and Mattie had two daughters, Mayme Lee Bryan and Pauline (Polly) Bryan.  After the death of Mattie Rymer, the girls were reportedly raised by Mattie's sister Laura Rymer and Mattie's brother Will Rymer.  In order for this census entry to make any sense, it would have to be the case that Eva P. Bryan was really Eva Pauline (Polly) Bryan, and she was back living with her father.

There are other problems with this census entry besides Pauline's name.  For example, Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate were both born in Tennessee.  So George Steward Bryan's, places of birth should have been TN TN TN rather than TN NC NC.  Also, Martha Ella (Ella) Elmore is listed as having borne two children, but at the time of the 1910 census she had only borne one child because Pauline was the daughter of Mattie Rymer.

Despite these problems, I have been able to verify that this census entry really was for my George Steward (Steward) Bryan by matching it against records from the Knoxville City Directory.

Earl Condon Lee Oter (Oter) McKnight age 1 6/12 married Cleo Bryan Underwood on 22 Dec 1940 in Knox County.  It was Cleo's second marriage, with Cleo first having married Burl J. Kyte.

Cleo Bryan Underwood was the daughter of John Amos (Amos) Underwood and Clauda Lee Bryan.

Amos Underwood was the son of Rufus White Underwood and Sarah A. Pollard, and the grandson of John (Monkey John) Underwood and Ellen Henry.  Monkey John was the brother of my third great grandfather William Ramey Underwood.

Clauda Lee Bryan was the daughter of Joshua C. Bryan and Lucinda Adaline (Addie) Mynatt.  Joshua was the brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) BryanWill's wife Malissa E. Underwood was the daughter of the aforementioned William Ramey Underwood.

Oter McKnight was the son of Rufus Conway (Rufe) McKnight age 38 and Carrie Bell Green age 34.  It looks very strange that Carrie was enumerated as Harriett.  The 1889 Jefferson County marriage record for the couple lists her name as C. B. Green, and the 1900 census entry for the family lists her name as Caria B. McKnight.  Carrie did die in 1911 and Rufe remarried in Knox County in 1916.  I can only conclude either that Carrie was Carrie Bell Harriet Green, or that the census enumerator made a mistake.

(Annie) Crowder.  I have not been able to identify Annie's parents.  Manifestly, the couple had not been married for 37 years.  Indeed, Annie was only 36 years old.  I suspect that the 37 years represents the total time that Thomas had been married to all three of his wives.  Given the error about the 37 years, I wonder if this was Annie's second marriage, or it really was her first.  If her age is correct, then she was only 17 years old when she and Thomas were married.

John Jacob (Jake) Bray living next door in dwelling number 178 was Thomas's first cousin.
