1880 Census, Morgan County, Tennessee

Dist. 1, Morgan County, Tennessee, 10 Jun 1880

Thomas J. Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, he was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

Charlotte J. Shannon was the daughter of Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls.

William R. Peters age 3 was William Wright Peters.  The middle initial R is a correct transcription.  I believe that the enumerator must have been thinking of his name as William Rite Peters or as William Right Peters or something like that.  In any case, he was clearly named for his grandfather Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon.

The death certificate of William Wright Peters lists his parents as Tom Peters and Lollie Voyls.  Charlotte (Lollie) Shannon was born about 1845, and Wright Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls were married in 1849.  So it is not 100% certain that Wright Shannon was Charlotte's birth father.  However, all other records associated with Charlotte (including her marriage) list her surname as Shannon.  She was certainly raised by Wright Shannon, and she herself used his surname in all known cases.  The only anomaly in this regard is her son's death certificate.

Mary Peters age 34 was the daughter of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  There is conflicting data as to whether Mary's middle initial was A or J.  Mary was the twin of James Fletcher (Fletcher) Peters, and they were one of three sets of twins in the family.  Mary was the sister of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

Eliga age 12 was Cleophus Elijah Samsel Sr.

For Asby Samsel age 1, her name was probably Asberine.  Asberine is an unusual name.  Given that John Henry Peters married Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross, it seems possible that there is some sort of connection between the names of Asberine Samsel and Asberine Cross.  Perhaps Asberine Samsel was named for Asberine Cross, who was her "aunt by marriage".  Or perhaps they had a common ancestor named Asberine, given that Asberine Cross's mother was Zipporah Peters.

I do not know who James A. Samsel's parents were.  He appeared frequently as a witness or signatory on various legal documents associated with my Peters family.

Arevalene/Avaline W. Cross was the daughter of Jacob Benton Cross and Louisa Ann Laymance.  Her sister was living next door as the stepdaughter of Peter L. Mathis.  The entry correctly identifies Arevalene and her mother as having been born in Georgia.  However, her father was really born in Tennessee.

Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters.  As such, Jacob was the nephew of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

Louisa Ann Laymance was the daughter of Jacob Charleton Laymance and Rutha Douglas.  She married first Jacob Benton Cross and married second Peter Leonard Mathis.  Sarah F. Mathis, the 23 year old step daughter, was in fact Sarah F. Cross, daughter of Jacob Benton Cross and Louisa Ann Laymance.  Sarah F. Cross had an out-of-wedlock child named Thomas Leonard Cross, and then later married James Washington Langley.  Thomas Leonard Cross was born 1882 and hence does not appear in this census entry.  The father of Thomas Leonard Cross was Peter Leonard Mathis.

Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters.  As such, Jacob was the nephew of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

John England and Jane (Jennie) Peters were my third great grandparents.  John was the son of Titus England and ElizabethJane was the daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.

Titus England and Sarah (Sallie) England were both children of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.  So John England and Jane Peters were first cousins who married.

The birth place of North Carolina for Jane is a puzzle.  There is no evidence that her parents were ever in North Carolina.  Jane was listed in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses as having been born in Tennessee.  Normally, I would suggest that Jane's birth place from the 1880 census entry was more credible than the birth places from the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses.  That is not because the 1880 census was any more credible than the earlier censuses.  It is because censuses often listed people's birth place as being the state where they were living without regard to where they were really born.  So I think that all else being equal, a place of birth different from the census state is more credible than a place of birth that is the same as the census state.  But in this case, I think Jane was born in Tennessee.

Humphrey Jones age 21 married Mary Isabella England on 4 Jun 1880, the day after the census was enumerated.  Mary was enumerated with her parents next door in dwelling number 30 (see above).

William Houston (Houston) Jones age 7 was the son of Mr. Howard and Margaret Jones.  Margaret was living next door with her newlywed husband James William (William or Wilburn or Bill) England (see dwelling number 32 below).

James Wilburn (Wilburn or William) England was the son of my third great grandparents John England and Jane Peters from dwelling number 30.  As such, William was the brother of my second great grandmother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England.

William was born about 1848, but his census age drifts a bit from census to census.  His name in the 1850 census was James W. England, in the 1860 census it was Willburn, and in the 1870 census it was Willburn.  It appears that his name was James Willburn England, and that he was known as Willburn or William.

William married Margaret Jones on 17 Aug 1878 in Morgan County.  Margaret was the daughter of William Jones and Martha (Patsy).

Wiley R. England Sr. age 52 was probably the son of my fourth great grandparents Titus England and Elizabeth.  If so, then Wiley was the brother of my third great grandfather John England.

Permina Emaline (Emaline) McCart age 45 was the daughter of Robert J McCart Jr. and Hannah.  Robert J McCart Jr. was the son of William H McCart and Hannah Peters.  It is not known how Hannah Peters fits into the family.

William Titus (Titus) England age 23 was the son of Wiley R. England Sr. and Permina Emeline (Emeline) McCart.  Wiley England Sr. was probably the son of my fourth great grandparents Titus England and Elizabeth.  As such, Wiley England Sr. was probably the brother of my third great grandfather John England, and Titus England from this census entry was probably the first cousin of my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England.

Rebecca P. Shannon age 29 was the daughter of James Shannon and Mary Hamby.  Rebecca and Titus were married on 25 Nov 1876 in Morgan County.

Doctor L. (Dock) England age 19 was also the son of Wiley R. England Sr. and Permina Emeline (Emeline) McCart.  Dock married Sarah Ann Shannon age 19 on 25 Jan 1880 in Morgan County, Tennessee.  Sarah Shannon was the daughter of Andrew M. Shannon and Charity Emeline Hembree, and the granddaughter of James Shannon and Mary Hamby.  So Sarah was Rebecca's niece.

William T. Cross was the son of Abraham H. Cross and Frances White.  William was from Scott County and Abraham was from North Carolina.  So I don't think this family was one of mine, except inasmuch as they may have moved from Baltimore County, Maryland to North Carolina before moving to Tennessee.

William's wife was Emily K. Shoopman.

William's birth places appear to be incorrect.  He himself was born in Tennessee, but his father was born in North Carolina and his mother was born in Tennessee.

Genetta Underwood was the daughter of William Underwood and Lucretia.  She was the widow of John T. Cross, son of Elijah Cross and Mary Polly Winters.  John T. Cross was the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross, the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

The "grandson" Cary Ales was in fact a granddaughter Cora Alice (Cory) Cross.  Cory was the daughter of Mary Jane Cross.  Cory was known both as Cora Alice Cross and as Cora Alice Goss.  She was raised by her mother Mary Jane Cross and by her stepfather Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goss.  There is some speculation and evidence that Dr. Goss was Cory's biological father.
