James A. Samsel married Mary J. Peters in 1865 in Anderson County.  Mary was the daughter of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Mary was the sister of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

Mary was enumerated in the 1880 census, and she certainly seems to have died before the 1900 census.  In addition, there is evidence that she died before 1886 because a James Samsel married Caroline Wyatt in 1886 in Anderson County.  I am not aware of any other James Samsel than James A. Samsel.  If this theory is correct, then Caroline Wyatt died before 1900.

Donie Samsel age 22 presents several mysteries.  Based on the 1880 census, her name should have been Asberine C. Samsel.  It's hard to figure out how Asberine C. Samsel and Donie Samsel could have been the same person, but apparently they were.  Also, Donie appears to have been the mother of Walter Samsel.  However, she was listed as single rather than as widowed or divorced.  Perhaps Walter was born out of wedlock.

Charlotte J. Shannon was the daughter of Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon and Sidney Viles/Voyls.  She married first Thomas Jefferson (Tom) Peters.  Charley Peters and Thomas Peters were her sons from her first marriage.  She married second William Roddy.  It is reported that she and William Roddy were divorced prior to the 1900 census.  It's interesting that she listed herself as married.  I need to verify the date of her divorce.  Also, it is the case that she resumed using the Peters surname.  She was a Peters for the 1910 census, for the 1920 census, for her death certificate, and for her tombstone.

Thomas Jefferson (Tom) Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, he was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

William Wright Peters was the son of Tom Peters and Lollie Voyls according to his death certificate.  His wife was Emily/Emma E. Woods.

William Wright Peters was the son of Thomas Jefferson (Tom) Peters.  Thomas Jefferson (Tom) Peters married Catherine J. Shannon on 28 Apr 1873 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  However, I think perhaps there is an error of some sort associated with the marriage record, because all other records reflect that her name was Charlotte Shannon.  Lollie and Lottie are both common nicknames for Charlotte.  I'm still working on why the death certificate of William Wright Peters said that her surname was Voyls.

The family was enumerated in 1880 in Anderson County, with Thomas's wife listed as Charlty and with William Wright Peters listed as William R. Peters (William "Right" Peters).

Thomas Jefferson (Tom) Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Thomas was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters and William Wright Peters was the first cousin of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.

Isaac Daugherty was the son of John Daugherty and Elizabeth Jane Bray.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph H. Bray and Sarah L. Duncan.  As such, Elizabeth was the niece of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.  Even though he was listed as a boarder, Edward P. Daugherty was Isaac's brother.

Isaac's wife was Judy Daugherty.  I don't know if Isaac and Judy were related (cousins of some sort), but they probably were.

Adam Clark (Clark) Peters was the son of James Peters and Rachel McCart, and the grandson of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.  Clara B. Cloyd was Clark's third wife.  They had just married, so all the children were from Clark's previous marriages.

Martha age 66 was Clark's sister who never married.  Dow R. Peters was Reuben Dowell (Dowell) Peters, son of Wesley M. Peters and Catherine Paul.  Clark Peters and Dowell Peters were first cousins, both having been grandsons of Tobias Peters Sr.  I am not aware of any connection between Tobias Peters Sr. and my three Peters lines.

Parthena was Dowell Peters' second wife. I do not know Parthena's surname.  Allie appears to have been the daughter of either Dowell or of Parthena, but it is not clear which.

William Houston (Houston) Jones age 27 was the son of Margaret Jones and Mr. Howard.  Margaret Jones married James William (William or Wilburn or Bill) England, and Bill England was the stepfather of Houston Jones.  However, in the 1880 census Houston Jones was enumerated with his grandparents, living next door to his mother and stepfather rather than actually living with them.

Bill England was the son of my third great grandparents John England and Jane (Jenny) Peters.  As such, Bill England was the brother of my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England.

Houston Jones's first wife was Nancy Ann Howard age 38.

Benjamin Franklin Goss was the husband of Mary Jane Cross . Mary Jane Cross was the great granddaughter of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  Mary Jane's line was William Cross to Elijah Cross to John T. Cross to Mary Jane Cross.  I do not know why Benjamin Goss and his wife Mary were not living together at the time of the 1900 census, and I don't know where Mary was living.

Mary Goss was listed as an heir to the land of William Cross in an 1888 Anderson County lawsuit.
