The proper spelling of the surname for all family members in this census entry was Johnston rather than Johnson.

Ernest Madison Johnston age 3/12 married Febry Ellen Bray on 16 Apr 1927 in Loudon County.  Febry was the daughter of Robert Henry (Henry) Bray and Maude Elizabeth Hinds.  Uncle Henry was the brother of my great grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray.

Ernest was the son of Rufus Johnston age 39 and Rhoda Ann Hinds age 35.

Guy Alonzo Jones age 4 later married Menta Reese (Recie) Peters.  Recie was the daughter of Robert Asbury Peters and Mollie Caroline Cole.  As such, Recie was the double first cousin of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters Sr.

There is an error in this census entry.  It says that Mary had borne five children with four still living, but six children were listed.  Also, the entry says that John and Mary had been married for 16 years and that their oldest child was 14 years old.  In fact, Estalla and James were the children of John S. Jones and his first wife Bell Smith who were married in 1884.  The remaining children were the children of John S. Jones and his second wife Mary E. (Mollie) Gibson who were married in 1890.

Sarah/Sallie Effie Founlee (Effie) Scarbrough age 29 was the daughter of Priestly King (King) Scarbrough and Nancy Temple Smith.  I'm recording the family primarily because there are so many Scarbrough connections with my Peters family and other Anderson County families.  For example, Effie was the sister of Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough who married Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.  Aunt Cordie was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole who married Alva Edward Peters.

In 1990, Effie Scarbrough was the wife of Joseph B. Worthington.  I do not know why Joseph was not living with the family in 1900.  Joseph died in 1904, and Effie died in 1909.  So 1900 was the last year in which the family could have been enumerated as a whole.

I am not directly related to Effie Scarbrough.  However, I am related to Joseph B. Worthington.  He was the son of Samuel Worthington and Catherine Black, and the grandson of Joseph Worthington and Susannah England.  Susannah was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents John England and Vesta Zipporah (Zipporah) Choate.  As such, Susannah was the sister of my fourth great grandfather Titus England and also the sister of my fourth great grandmother Sarah (Sallie) England.

Sarah Ann Reed was the widow of Elijah J. Cross.  Elijah was the son of David L. Cross and Mary (Polly) Himes.  As such, Elijah was the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

Laura L. Cross, daughter of Elijah J. Cross and Sarah A. Reed, had married John Wesley Crow about 1897.  I don't know why John Wesley Crow wasn't living with the family.

Leroy (Roy L.) Cross was the son of William H. Cross and Joanna A. Long.  As such, he was the nephew of Millard Fillmore Cross living a few houses away in dwelling number 128.

Leroy (Roy L.) Cross was the great grandson of Brittain Cross and Mary (Polly) Parks.  Because there is no proven connection between Brittain Cross and my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy, there is no proven connection between Leroy (Roy L.) Cross and my line.

Laura Borum was Leroy Cross's first wife.  Leroy married Minta (Mintie) Haggard about 1904, so Laura must have died between 1900 and 1904.

Lawrence was listed as an adopted son.  This census entry contains no clues as to Lawrence's birth parents.

Ben Peters' wife was Amanda C. Hacker.

Cora Alice (Cory) Cross age 22 was the daughter of Mary Jane Cross.  Cory was raised by her mother and by her stepfather Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goss.  Cory's name is often written as Cora Alice Goss, and there is some speculation and evidence that Dr. Goss was Cory's biological father.

Mary Jane Cross was the daughter of John T. Cross and Genetta Underwood.  John T. Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters, and the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  Genetta Underwood was the daughter of William Underwood and Lucretia.  It seems extremely likely that this William Underwood was a part of my Underwood family from Rowan County, North Carolina and Sevier County, Tennessee, but I have not been able to make the connection.

Richard H. Peters was the son of Washington Blair (Blair) Peters and Mary E. Holder.  As such, Richard was the nephew of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters and the first cousin of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.

John Henry Peters had a son named Richard D. Peters who died in infancy.  So Richard H. Peters and Richard D. Peters were first cousins.  I wonder if the two Richard Peters first cousins had a common ancestor named Richard.  I am not aware of any such Richard on the Peters side of their respective families.  Both Richard Peters were grandsons of Ruby M. Smith who married John W. Peters.  Perhaps there was a Richard on the Smith side of the family.  The Smith family is pretty much a brick wall, so I don't know if there was a Richard Smith or not.

I do not know who Richard's wife Sarah was.  Something is peculiar about this census entry.  Richard and Sarah were married about 1895, so Lucy, Ida, and Theodore were clearly their children.  But Cassie must have been a child of an earlier marriage.  Since Cassie's surname was Peters, that would make it seem as if she was Richard's child rather than Sarah's.  On the other hand, Sarah had four children of whom all four were still living.  So perhaps Cassie was Sarah's child after all and had been adopted by Richard.  That might explain Cassie's surname of Peters.

I believe this was Robert K. Peters, son of Tobias Peters and Mary Jane Wright.  Tobias Peters who married Mary Jane Wright was neither Tobias Peters Sr. nor Tobias Peters Jr.  Rather, he was the son of James Peters.  As such, Tobias Peters who married Mary Jane Wright was the grandson of Tobias Peters Sr. and the nephew of Tobias Peters Jr.

Charles Nelson Peters was the son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby M. Smith.  As such, he was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.  Charles' wife was Elizabeth Gann.

This census entry seems internally inconsistent in that Elizabeth was born in Georgia, but her children's mother was born in Tennessee.

John W. Peters died in the Civil War, and Charles Nelson Peters made application for a pension based on his father's war service.  The pension application was based on the fact that Charles was crippled.  The pension application was ultimately unsuccessful, but the application provides a great deal of information about the family.

I don't know for sure who Elizabeth was.  My best guess is that she was Elizabeth Eastridge, second wife of James Wiley (Wiley) Peters.  Wiley Peters died in 1888.  Elizabeth was the right age to have been Elizabeth Eastridge.  The family was enumerated in the 1880 census in Morgan County.  However, Arthur was not born at the time of the 1880 census, so he is no help in figuring out who this family was.  And Wiley Peterss' son William was 12 years old in the 1880 census, so he doesn't fit.  But nobody else fits here, either.

William Roddy married Charlotte J. (Sharlley or Lottie) Shannon in 1889.  They were divorced before the 1900 census.  William's 1900 census entry says "divorced", but Charlotte's says "married".  Both of their census entries say "widowed" in 1910.

Charlotte's first husband was Thomas J. (Tom) Peters, son of my third great grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby M. Smith.  As such, Tom was the brother of my second great grandfather John Henry Peters.

William's first wife was Martha Elizabeth (Elizabeth) Thomas.
