I am interested in this family because I believe that Lizzie Davis age 6 later married Joshua (Josh) Bray, son of John H. Bray and Margaret Messamore.

Davis researchers report that the grandchildren were all born out of wedlock, the children of Catherine Jane (Jane) Davis who was listed as Jane Davis age 34 in this census entry.

The head of household was Catherine Jane Lamar, widow of James Samuel Davis.

Further update: Davis researchers report that this Lizzie Davis married Rufus Elijah Wallace (b-1871) in Anderson County on 18 Sep 1895.  So I'm still looking for the Lizzie Davis that married Joshua Bray.

George Francis Marion (Francis) England was the son of Frederick C. (Fred) England and Mary P. McKamey.  His second wife was Telitha/Tabitha Brown.  James and George were the children of Francis and his first wife Mary Smith.  Francis and Telitha/Tabitha were married 8 Jan 1873.

Fred England was from Burke County, North Carolina.  He was not closely related (if related at all) to my England family that originated with John England of Montgomery County, Virginia.  But Fred England may have been related to my third great grandfather Jacob England who was from Burke County.  I have my suspicions that my Montgomery County family of Englands originated in Burke County, and that my two separate England families may really be one and the same.  But I have not been able to prove it so far.

Anna S. (Annie) Scarbrough age 21 was the daughter of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough Sr. and Frances E. Annie married Lewis Brock age 30 on 2 Jan 1876 in Anderson County.  Lewis was the son of John Brock and Lucy Brumett.

I'm not related to anybody in this family, but I record all Scarbrough census entries because there were so many marriages between the Scarbrough family and my Peters family.

Amanda Melvina Cross, Mary J. Cross, and Emilia Jane (Jane) Cross were descendants of my fourth great grandfather William Cross. the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  Their exact relationship to William is uncertain.

Other research suggests that Amanda and Mary were William's daughters, and that Jane was Mary's daughter.  Amanda Melvina paid taxes on William's land in her later years.  Mary sold her share of William's land in 1847.  An 1888 lawsuit states that Jane was the heir of Mary.  So the suggested relationships are good guesses.  If Mary was the mother of Jane, then Jane was probably born out of wedlock.

This census entry does not shed much light on the family relationships situation because the "relationship" fields (wife, son, daughter, etc.) that first appeared in the 1880 census were left blank for this family.  Also, the birth places are probably incorrect.  The three women were surely born in Tennessee, but Amanda's parents and Mary's parents surely were not.

The surname in this census entry is undecipherable, and there is no census index which lists this family as a Cross family.  I can identify the entry only because the given names are so distinctive.  I long treated the women as having been missed in the 1880 census, or possibly as having died before 1880.  I was motivated to look for them again after I discovered a deed which proved that Amanda and Mary were still living in 1881.

This census entry considerably understates the ages of the three women.  Amanda was 28 in 1850, 36 in 1860, and 48 in 1870.  Mary was 37 in 1850, 47 in 1860, and 51 in 1870.  Jane was 18 in 1850, 25 in 1860, and 31 in 1870.

Joseph Leander Pyatt was the grandfather of Aunt Jo Peters, nee Anne Jo (Jo) Hackworth.  Aunt Jo was the sister-in-law of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters Sr., and is the widow of of William Birchel (Birchel) Peters.  Aunt Jo refers to Joseph Leander Pyatt as Grandpa Pyatt.

In addition, it was Joseph Leander Pyatt who purchased the land of William Cross at auction at the courthouse door in 1888 after the Cross family lawsuit in a dispute over William's land.

Joseph's wife in 1880 was Amanda Isabel Peak.  The couple was married 7 Dec 1871.  It therefore seems likely to me that Amanda was Joseph's second wife, and that Joseph's first wife would have been the mother of Flired.

Amanda Isabel Peak died 24 Sep 1882, and Joseph Leander Pyatt married Sabra Ann Scarbrough 9 Mar 1884.  Joseph and Sabra had a daughter Mary A. Pyatt born May 1889.  It therefore seems likely to me that Amanda's daughter Mary A. Pyatt died, and that Joseph then had another daughter with Sabra whom he named Mary A. Pyatt.

Joseph B. Cross was the son of William Cross and Jane (Jennie) Black, and hence was the grandson of Brittain/Britton Cross and Mary (Polly) Parks. . His wife was Sephie Crozier.  One might suspect that Harriet Crozier was a former slave that had been owned by the Crozier family.

Joe Bray was the son of my third great grandparents Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.

Salina Moore was the daughter of my third great grandparents Joseph E. Moore and Elizabeth Braden.

Will Scarbrough age 19 was probably William C. Scarbrough, the son of Tobias P. Scarbrough and Susan J. Diggs.

It seems very likely that Tobias's full name was Tobias Peters Scarbrough.  He was the son of Margaret Peters and William Scarbrough.  As such, he was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters and also the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Henry Peters Jr.

William Scarbrough Freels age 72 was the son of Isaac Clark Freels and Nancy Scarbrough.  If my guess about Will Scarbrough age 19 is correct, then Will was the second cousin once removed of William Scarbrough Freels.

Susan Caroline Rather age 51 was the second wife of William Scarbrough Freels.  They were married on 11 Aug 1870 in Roane County.

James Scarbrough age 65 was the son of John Ward Scarbrough and Eleanor Clarice Harper, and the grandson of Isaac Scarbrough and Mary A. Ward

John Ward Scarbrough was the first cousin of Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough who married Tobias Peters Sr.  The net effect is that James Scarbrough age 65 was the second cousin of all the children of Tobias Peters Sr.

Mary Ann J. (Ann) Scates age 38 was the second wife of James Scarbrough.  They were married on 6 Aug 1863 in Knox County.  Ann was the daughter of Tinsley Scates and Malinda.  Eliza Scarbrough age 23 was the daughter of James Scarbrough and his first wife Sarah.

This is a most interesting entry.  Calvin Keith married first Anna J. (Annie) Cross on 23 Jul 1874.  They had three children -- Joseph, Albert, and Martha -- and Annie died before the 1880 census.  Annie Cross was the sister of my second great grandmother Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross who married my second great grandfather John H. Peters.  Joseph and Albert were living with John H. Peters and Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross in 1880 (see below, listed as nephews).  Martha was living with Alexander Cross and Martha Herrel (see below, listed as a niece, Alexander Cross was the brother of Annie and Hulda).  Calvin Keith did remarry, but because the 1890 census was lost in a fire, it is not clear if he reclaimed his children after he remarried, or if they continued to be raised by his sister and brother.

The fact that Calvin Keith was living with a black Cross family, and the fact that his (now dead) wife was a Cross makes me wonder if these black Crosses were former slaves of my Cross ancestors.  I have not yet checked tax records to see if they owned slaves.

The name Preston William Shannon appears over and over again in Peters and Scarbrough records.  Pleasant Wright Shannon age 55 was Preston's brother.  All of the Shannon siblings were children of Andrew Shannon and Elizabeth.

Rebecca Shannon age 62 is an especially interesting mystery.  She married a John England in 1862.  In 1870, she was enumerated with her siblings as Rebecca Shannon, and with nary a sign that she had ever been married.  Then, in the 1880 entry above, she was enumerated as the widow Rebecca England.  The big mystery is that there appears to have been no John England in Anderson County or surrounding counties who was even remotely the right age to have married Rebecca Shannon except for men named John England who were already married to somebody else.

Elizabeth A. Scarbrough age 49 and Nancy A. F. Scarbrough age 39 were daughters of James Scarbrough and Anna (Annie) Rice.  Charles M. Smith age 51 and Elizabeth A. Scarbrough were married 4 Mar 1855 in Anderson County, Tennessee.

There is no doubt a mistake in the census in that the male named Walter was listed as a granddaughter rather than a grandson.  In any case, I do not know who Walter's parents were.

There are several connections between this Scarbrough family and my Peters family.

  • Chesley J. Scarbrough was the brother of Elizabeth and Nancy.  Chesley was the second husband of my second great grandmother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England.
  • Chesley's son Robert Houston Scarbrough married second Martha Jane (Jenny) Peters who was the daughter of Henry Clark (Clark) Peters and Perlina Shilling.  Clark was the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.
  • John W. Scarbrough was another brother of Elizabeth and Nancy.  John married Mary A. (Polly) Peters who was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  Mary and Clark were therefore the sister and brother of my third great grandmothers Zipporah Peters and Jane (Jenny) Peters.
  • Sarah Jane (Jane) Scarbrough was the sister of Elizabeth and Nancy.  Jane married Francis Asbury (Frank) Peters who was the son of my fourth great grandparents Henry Peters Jr. and Jane England.  Frank was therefore the brother of my third great grandfather John W. Peters.
  • William V. (Will) Scarbrough was another brother of Elizabeth and Nancy.  Will married Sarah E. Cross.  Sarah was the daughter of my third great grandparents Alfred Carter Cross and the aforementioned Zipporah Peters.

Safrona E. (Frona) Scarbrough was the wife of Ransom Sampson Wilshire.  I was under the belief that she was the daughter of Epicurian Calvin (Eppy) Scarbrough and Tabitha Dorcas P. Wilson.  However, a fellow researcher has reported to me that this Frona Scarbrough was in fact the daughter of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough and Elizabeth Nuley.  But just to confuse things, Epicurian Calvin (Eppy) Scarbrough and Tabitha Dorcas P. Wilson did have a daughter named Saphronia.  The question is, am I confused yet?  The answer is, yes!

Jonathan Neff (Johnnie Boy) Scarbrough age 28 was the son of Epicurean Calvin (Eppy) Scarbrough and Tabitha Dorcas P. Wilson.  His wife was Mary Ann (Polly) Potter age 35.  Eppy age 7 was probably named Epicurean, after his grandfather.  William age 1 was William Henry (Hobe) Scarbrough.

Robert Scarbrough age 51 was the son of Isaac Scarbrough and Margaret (Peggy) Freeman.  The maiden name of his wife Lucinda age 49 is not known, nor is it known if Lucinda was his first or second wife.  It appears that Martha age 18 and Robert age 5 might have had different mothers.

I'm not related to anybody in this family, but I record all Scarbrough census entries because there were so many marriages between the Scarbrough family and my Peters family.

John Scarbrough age 16 appears as if he might have been John F. Scarbrough, son of Tobias P. Scarbrough and Susan J. Diggs.  However, John F. Scarbrough should have been about 12 years old at the time of the 1880 census, and there was a John Scarbrough age 11 living in the household of William Diggs.  So I think that John Scarbrough age 11 is a more likely candidate to have been John F. Scarbrough than is John Scarbrough age 16, and I don't know who this John Scarbrough was.

I'm not related to anybody in this family, but I record all Scarbrough census entries because there were so many marriages between the Scarbrough family and my Peters family.

Eliza Scarbrough age 14 was probably Eliza B. Scarbrough, daughter of Tobias P. Scarbrough and Susan J. Diggs.  Tobias Scarbrough appears to have died between 1870 and 1880, and his children seem to have been scattered about in various families as servants and laborers at the time of the 1880 census.

There does not appear to have been a family connection between Eliza B. Scarbrough and the Sanford Hennings family.

Polly married John W. Scarbrough age 54 on 24 May 1849 in Anderson County.  John was the son of James Scarborough and Anna Rice (frequently misspelled as Anna Price).

John W. Scarbrough was born on 9 Dec 1825.  He died on 4 Jan 1919 in Anderson County, Tennessee and was buried in the Scarbrough Cemetery.

James Alexander (Alec or Alex) Scarbrough age 32 was the son of Chesley J. Scarbrough and Sarah Yarnell.  Chesley's second wife was my second great grandmother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England.  It was also Chesley's second marriage, and there was no issue from their marriage.

Louisa E. Vann age 27 was the daughter of Dixon Vann and Louisa M. Taylor.  Louisa Vann and Alex Scarbrough were married on 14 Dec 1874 in Roane County.  Alex's brother Joel married Louisa's sister Eliza, So two Scarbrough brothers married two Vann sisters.

Ida Etta Scarbrough age 5 is listed as Etta Scarbrough in family records.  Sarah Scarbrough age 3 does not appear in family records and apparently died young.

Joel M. Scarbrough age 30 was the son of Chesley J. Scarbrough and Sarah Yarnell.  Chesley's second wife was my second great grandmother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England.  It was also Chesley's second marriage, and there was no issue from their marriage.

Eliza A. Vann age 26 was the daughter of Dixon Vann and Louisa M. Taylor.  Eliza Vann and Joel Scarbrough were married on 11 Aug 1877 in Roane County.  Joel's brother Alex married Eliza's sister Louisa, So two Scarbrough brothers married two Vann sisters.  Eliza's name was listed variously as Eliza A. and as Eliza M., suggesting that her middle name might have been Amanda or Mandy.

Sarah Yarnell married first Robert I.F. Nester, so her marriage record with Chesley shows her name as Sarah Nester.  Robert age 25 was Joel's brother Robert H. Scarbro (or R.H. Scarbro) who was Wallace Smith's grandfather.  Alvy was Alva Scarbro, son of Robert Scarbro and Robert's first wife Mary C. Oliver.  Alva was named for Alva A. Oliver, father of Mary Oliver.  Mary C. Oliver died the previous January.  Mary's mother was Sarah Emily Peters, daughter of my fourth great grandparents Henry Peters Jr. and Jane England.  Susan Ann Scarbrough was a sister of Joel and Robert.  She later married Henry Douglas Oliver.

There was a connection between my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters and Alva Scarbrough age 2 who was the grandson of Alva OliverAlva Edward Peters and Alva Scarbrough were second cousins, both great grandsons of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  But that doesn't explain the common given name.  Rather, Alva Edward Peters was indirectly related to Alva Oliver.  Alva Oliver was married to Thomas Peters' daughter Susan Emily Peters, and Susan Emily Peters was the grandaunt of Alva Edward Peters.  So Alva Oliver was Alva Edward Peters' "granduncle by marriage".

William and Clara Jane age 20 were married about 1876, but I haven't been able to find their marriage record or otherwise to determine Clara Jane's maiden name.

George Washington Keith age 33 was the son of James Calvin Keith and Susan Elizabeth Hicks, and the grandson of Spencer Keith.  There is some doubt as to Spencer Keith's wife.  Her first name is listed variously as Jane or Jincy, and her last name is listed variously as England or Choate.  Either way, Jane/Jincy was almost certainly closely related either to my England ancestors or my Choate ancestors in Anderson County.

Catherine Black Hendrix age 31 was the daughter of Alexander J. Hendrix and Catherine Garner.  George and Catherine were married on 23 Nov 1873 in Anderson County.

William John Diggs age 58 and Jerusha Pauline Pittman age 50 were the great grandparents of of Edna Pearl Holloway who married Samuel Arthur (Arthur) Peters.  Uncle Arthur was the brother of my grandfather Ernest Lester Peters Sr.  William and Jerusha were married on 27 Mar 1843 in Anderson County.

Sarah Diggs age 19 married James M. Moneymaker on 10 Jan 1889 in Anderson County, and they were the grandparents of the aforementioned Edna Pearl Holloway.

John Scarbrough age 11 was probably John F. Scarbrough, son of Tobias P. Scarbrough and Susan J. Diggs.  Tobias Scarbrough appears to have died between 1870 and 1880, and his children seem to have been scattered about in various families as servants and laborers at the time of the 1880 census.

It seems likely that John Scarbrough was related to William Diggs, possibly his nephew.  But I haven't yet figured out how the various Diggs family members fit together.

My second great grandfather John H. Peters age 35 was the son of John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.

My second great grandmother Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross age 34 was the daughter of Alfred Carter Cross and Zipporah Peters.

  • Their oldest son was William Daily (Will) Peters age 14.  Uncle Will married but did not have any children.
  • Alva Edward Peters age 9 was my great grandfather.  Alva's future wife Sallie Jane Cole was living next door in dwelling number 156.  So Alva and Sallie knew each other as children.  Also, it is the case that they were second cousins.
  • Robert A. (Robin) Peters age 7 later married Sallie's sister Mollie I. Cole.  Robert and Mollie's children were double first cousins of the children of Alva and Sallie.
  • Etta F. (Alza) Peters age 5 died in 1889 and never married.
  • John W. Peters died in 1900 and never married.
  • Samuel M. Peters age 2 died on 8 Oct 1880, not long after this census was taken.
  • Elizabeth A. (Lizzie) Peters age 1/12 died in 1898 and never married

John and Asberine had several more children before 1880 than the ones listed above.  Mary O. Peters was born in 1867 and died in 1868.  Sarah Isabel (Isabel) Peters was born in 1869 and died in 1871.  An infant son was born and died in 1875.

Joseph and Albert Keith were children of Calvin Keith and Asberine's sister Annie Cross.  Calvin Keith and Annie Cross were married 23 July 1874 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Annie died shortly before the 1880 census.  Note also that Martha Keith age 1 was living as a niece in the home of William Alexander (Alex) Cross dwelling number 161.  Martha was the sister of Joseph Keith and Albert Keith.  Alex Cross was the brother of Annie and Asberine.

Susan Emily Peters age 51 was the daughter of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  As such, Susan was the sister of my third great grandmother Zipporah Peters and the sister of my third great grandmother Jane (Jennie) Peters.

Susan married first Alva A. Oliver and married second Preston William Shannon age 59.  Douglas Oliver age 19 was the son of Alva Oliver and Susan Peters, and hence the stepson of Preston Shannon.

Sarah Cole age 10 was my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole.  Sallie's sister Ida was living with the John Scarbrough family.  John W. Scarbrough's wife was Mary Peters.  There is no other record whatsoever that my great grandmother's name was Sarah rather than Sallie.  At the time of the 1880 census, Sallie was a nickname for Sarah the same way Bob is a nickname for Robert.  I believe that the census enumerator heard Sallie Cole and wrote down Sarah Cole the same way one might today assume that a man whose name was Bob was really named Robert and that Bob was just a nickname.

Mary Peters and Susan E. Peters were sisters, daughters the aforementioned Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  Mary Peters was taking care of Ida Cole.  Susan Emily Peters was taking care of Ida's sister Sallie Jane Cole.

Sallie's other two sisters Cordie and Mollie were living with their mother Vesta Clay (Vestie) England in Knox County.  Their father William (Will) Cole had died between 1873 and 1880.

Vestie England was the daughter of John England and the aforementioned Jane (Jenny) Peters.

Polena Scarbrough age 18 is a bit of a mystery.  My best guess is that she was Parthena A. Scarbrough, daughter of Tobias P. Scarbrough and Susan J. Diggs.  Women named Parthena are often also listed with the name Polena.  Also, Tobias and Susan apparently died before 1880 and their children were enumerated in a number of different families in the 1880 census.  However, Parthena was enumerated in the Archbald Gibson family in 1880.  So if Polena and Parthena were the same person, then she was enumerated two different times.

Henry Clark (Clark) Peters age 60 was one of mine, but there nevertheless is a bit of uncertainty about his ancestry.  Clark Peters was the son either of Henry Peters Jr. or of Thomas PetersHenry Jr. and Thomas were brothers, and both of them were my fourth great grandfathers.

Perlina Ann Shilling age 53 was the daughter of Buford Shilling and Ann Hayes.  There is a persistent oral history in my Peters family that we have Cherokee ancestors.  I do not believe that the oral history is correct for my line, but Perlina Ann Shilling may be the source of that oral history.  Perlina's mother Ann Hays was either full blooded Cherokee, or 1/2 Cherokee.  So Perlina herself was either 1/2 Cherokee or 1/4 Cherokee.  However, my Peters line does not descend from Clark and Perlina.  Rather, Clark Peters is one of our collateral lines.

The children in this census entry were all first cousins of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.  Calvin and Mark Scarbrough visited Alva regularly after they were all adults.

W. V. Scarbrough filed an affidavit in the Civil War pension records of my second great grandfather John H. Peters.  William V. Scarbrough filed an affidavit in the Civil War pension record of my third great grandfather John England.  Will Scarbrough's connection to John England was that John England's wife Jane (Jenny) Peters and Will Scarbrough's mother-in-law Zipporah Peters were sisters.

Anna Elizabeth Peters was the daughter of Henry Clark (Clark) Peters and Perlina Ann Shilling.  Anna was enumerated in both 1870 and 1880 and she married William B. Robert Minnafe Yarnell and Sarah Hall Bray were married 27 Aug 1865 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Sarah was the daughter of my third great grandparents Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.  Nancy Ann Bray was Sarah's sister.  They were both sisters of my second great grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray.

Edward Payne Bray was born in Kentucky and Anna F. Messamore was born in Virginia, so the birth places as given for Sarah and Nancy should be TN KY VA rather than TN TN TN.

Robert Minnafe Yarnell was the son of Joel Yarnell and Jemima Conner.  I suspect that Chesley Yarnell age 6 may have been named for Chesley J. Scarbrough.  Chesley Scarbrough's first wife was Sarah Yarnell, another daughter of Joel Yarnell and Jemima Conner.  So Chesley Scarbrough was Chesley Yarnell's "uncle by marriage".  Indeed, Joel Yarbrough was living with his daughter Sarah and his son-in-law Chesley Scarbrough in the 1870 census.  Chesley J. Scarbrough is important in my own family history because he was the second husband of my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England.

Richard Houston Scarbrough age 28 was the son of Preastley King (King) Scarbrough and Nancy Temple Smith, and the grandson of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough Sr. and Elizabeth Nunely.

Marjorie Anna (Annie) Gentry age 24 was the daughter of Sarah age 60.  I do not yet know who Annie Gentry's father was.  Richard and Annie were married on 7 Jan 1875 in Knox County.

Richard was the brother of Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough who married Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.  Aunt Cordie was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole.  So I have Cole cousins in this branch of the Scarbrough family.  It's interesting that Richard was a miller because Uncle Ross also had a mill.  I wonder if it was really the same mill.

Filbert Scarbrough age 24 was the son of Francis Marion Scarbrough and Elizabeth Jane Potter, and the grandson of William Scarbrough and Margaret Peters.  Margaret was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte.  As such, Margaret was the sister of my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters and also the sister of my fourth great grandfather Henry Peters Jr.  Filbert's name was spelled variously as Filbert, Felbert, and Thelbert.  But the weight of evidence seems to be that Filbert is the most nearly correct spelling.

Filbert's wife was Margaret Kincaid age 24.  They were married on 13 Aug 1879 in Anderson County.

Francis Marion (Frank) Scarbrough age 49 was the son of William Scarbrough and Margaret Peters.  Margaret was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte.  As such, Margaret was the sister of my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters and also the sister of my fourth great grandfather Henry Peters Jr..

Elizabeth Jane (Betsy) Potter age 52 was the daughter of Thomas Potter.  I do not have a primary source for Betsy's mother, but some researchers say that Thomas Potter was married twice, that his second wife was Elizabeth Scarbrough, and that Elizabeth Scarbrough was Betsy's mother.  Even if this information is correct, I do not know how this Elizabeth Scarbrough would fit into the Scarbrough family.  Betsy and Frank were married on 5 Feb 1854 in Roane County.  The birth places for Betsy's parents were not listed, but it is known that Thomas Potter was born in North Carolina.
