1860 Census, Morgan County, Tennessee

Dist. 1, Morgan County, Tennessee, 8 Jun 1860
p.479a, dwelling number 117, family number 119
Cross John 29 m w farmer 100 100 TN
       Jenetta 28 f w domestic NC
       Francis M. 8 m w TN
       Mary Jane 5 f w TN
       Joseph 3 m w TN
       Elizabeth 1 f w TN
       Pennilton 1/12 m w TN

John T. Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters, and the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, John was the nephew of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

John T. Cross died in 1864, so this is the last census in which he appeared.  Gennette was the head of household for the family in subsequent censuses.

Genette Underwood was the daughter of William Underwood and Lucretia.  I have not found any link between Genette Underwood and my Underwood family of Sevier County, Tennessee, even though my Underwood family was originally from North Carolina and Genette was also from North Carolina.

Dist. 1, Morgan County, Tennessee, 8 Jun 1860
p.479a, dwelling number 118, family number 120
Laymance Ruth 49 f w farm manager $500/$150 SC
Cross Louisa A. 20 f w seamstress GA
         Auveline 5 f w GA
Laymance Sarah F 4 f w TN
         Hiram 18 m w farm labor GA cannot R/W
         Sarah 13 f w GA cannot R/W

Rutha Douglas was the widow of Jacob Charleton Laymance.  She was living with her daughter Louisa Ann Laymance who was the widow of Jacob Benton Cross.  Jacob Benton Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Genetta Underwood from next door in dwelling number 117.

Avaline W. Cross age 5 and Sarah Florence Cross age 4 were daughters of Jacob Benton Cross and Louisa Ann Laymance.  It appears to me as if the census enumerator inserted the surname Laymance one person too soon, and should have inserted it for Hiram, so that Sarah F. would have been correctly enumerated with the surname of Cross.

Hiram age 18 and Sarah age 13 were Louisa's brother and sister.

Dist. 1, Morgan County, Tennessee, 8 Jun 1860
p.479b, dwelling number 119, family number 121
Cross Franklin 21 m w farmer /$75 TN married within the year
Virginia 15 f w domestic GA married within the year

Franklin W. (Frank) Cross was the son of Elijah Cross and Mary (Polly) Winters, and the grandson of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Frank was the nephew of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

Virginia Florence Laymance was the daughter of Jacob Charleton Laymance and Rutha Douglas.

Dist. 2, Morgan County, Tennessee, 15 Jun 1860, Crooked Fork PO
p.484b, dwelling number 189, family number 191
Peters Clark 33 m w farmer /$200 TN
        Perlina 30 f w domestic TN
        Ann E. 10 f w TN
        Harvey 8 m w TN
        Sarah 6 f w TN
        Thomas 4 m w TN
        John W. 2 m w TN

Henry Clark (Clark) Peters age 33 was the son of either Thomas Peters or of Thomas's brother Henry Peters Jr.  Both Thomas and Henry Jr.  were my fourth great grandfathers.  I am descended from three of their children through cousin marriages, namely John W. Peters, Zipporah Peters, and Jane Peters.

John W. was the son of Henry Jr., and Zipporah and Jane were daughters of Thomas.  Because Clark was the son of either Thomas or of Henry Jr., he was the brother of John W. and the first cousin of Zipporah and Jane, or vice versa.

Perlina Ann Shilling age 30 was the daughter of Buford Shilling and Ann Hayes.  Perlina was either 1/4 or 1/2 Cherokee through her mother, leading to the statement I have sometimes heard that "the Peters have Indian blood".  This particular line of Peters certainly did, but I do not believe that my Peters line did.

There was a daughter Martha Jane (Jennie) Peters was born 8 Nov 1859.  I do not know why she was not enumerated in the 1860 census.  Perhaps records of her birth are incorrect and she was really born 8 Nov 1860.

Dist. 2, Morgan County, Tennessee, 14 Jun 1860, Crooked Fork PO
p.485b, dwelling number 204, family number 206
Cross Elijah 64 m w carpenter $500/$300 TN
         Mary 62 f w domestic VA
Barnes John 10 m w TN

Elijah Cross was the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Elijah was the brother of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.  I believe Elijah's mother's name was Mary, but this is not proven.

Mary (Polly) Winters age 62 was the daughter of Moses Wineters Jr. and Elizabeth Jane Charleton.  It's not totally clear which generation anglicized the Wineters spelling (German, I think) to Winters.

Dist. 4, Morgan County, Tennessee, 22 Jun 1860

         Emly Jane 1 f w TN

Permina Emaline McCart age 27 was the daughter of Robert McCart Jr. and Hannah, and the granddaughter of Robert McCart Sr. and Hannah Peters.  She married Wiley England on 25 Mar 1849 in Anderson County, Tennessee.

Wiley England is a little more problematic.  He was probably the son of my fourth great grandparents Titus England and Elizabeth, and the grandson of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.

James Peters was the oldest son of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.

Rachel McCart was the daughter of Robert McCart and Hannah Peters.

I don't know who Lovisa McCart's parents were, but I assume that she was probably Rachel McCart's niece.

It's hard to know for sure, but I doubt that all those twenty-something people attended school.
