Mary Jane according to any official records is the daughter of Leonard S. Huff & Louisa Allen the widow Woolford. However, this was a lie and the government records are in fact incorrect. Leonard S. Huff impregnated his step-daughter Elizabeth Perlina Woolford who was sent away to stay with relatives while she had the child (Mary Jane). After the birth of Mary Jane, Leonard & Louisa raised Mary Jane as if she were their natural daughter. Mary Jane only found out the truth when her jealous half-sister Sarah Huff Gee, upset over the dowry Leonard S. Huff gave to Shadrach & Mary Jane on their wedding day, told Mary Jane the truth. Mary Jane went to Shadrach in tears asking if he wanted to call off the wedding (he loved her or I wouldn't be here today). But I mention this to point out how imprecise even government documentation can be. If Grandpa Ernest Wall's sister Vida Wall Hyder had not told Mary Lou about the family scandal it would be lost and we never would know the truth. Grandma & Grandpa Wall were furious with Vida for telling Mary Lou, but Vida remained firm, the kids had a right to know. So when "pro's" get all huffy that you don't mind your P's & Q's the way they do I tell them this story. They usually shut up at that point. My guess is they would dismiss this as hearsay and mindlessly indicate Mary Jane's mother was Louisa Allen when in fact Louisa was the grandmother. And so it goes...... (James E. Leonard's second wife was Louisa Allen, and Louisa was the mother of Elizabeth Perlina Woolford.
