-----
Information from William Jackson Bryan: It is not known for a fact, but it has been reported that they were married on horse back. It is certainly possible, due to circuit riding preachers.
-----
Information from Robert Elmer Bryan: The age of 12 when she was married is correct, not a typographical error. The fact that she was married at such an early age is a part of family tradition. She still played with dolls after she was married, and her mother had to make her stop doing it.6

Loretta's first name was spelled as Clarissa in family records but was spelled as Clarsa by the court clerk.7

NarrativeThe following is from conversations with George Cox's grandchildren, recorded at the Cox reunion in Dandridge in 2000 by Jerry Bryan.
George Cox was a farmer. Several of his grandchildren reported at the 2000 Cox reunion that their Grandpa Cox was very distant and aloof, and that they were a little afraid of him. He never said anything. With one exception he never sang, but when he was younger he had a beautiful tenor voice and had taught singing. The one exception is that he sometimes sang in his sleep. Grandma and Grandpa Cox had a wooden bench on their front porch, and Grandpa would lay his hat on the arm of the bench as a pillow so he could take a nap.20
Narrative
The following is from The Nichols Book by Wyatt Nichols, page 68.
George Cox, husband of Loretta Nichols Cox, born in Greene County, Tennessee, in the 1860's. He spent all of his life farming in either Greene County or Jefferson County, Tennessee.
-----
In writing about my Uncle George Cox, I must say he was my favorite Uncle. He was a very mild natured and fine dispositioned and loved to tell a sly joke for the benefit of those around him. One of his greatest sports was squirrel hunting. I can remember well seeing him tamper his shot and powder in his muzzle loading shotgun with a ramrod. He used to kid his neighbors about their modern guns in shooting a squirrel out of the highest tree. He usually won. This old muzzle loading gun was a prize possession of his as it had belonged to his uncle who was killed fighting in the Union Army during the Civil War. (Note: this was George Washington Cox, older brother of John Tivis Cox. George Washington Cox was killed 29 Dec 1863. This was the same date as the Battle of Mossey Creek, so that is probably where he was killed. George Jackson Cox was probably named for his uncle George Washington Cox.)
-----
He was a fine singer, especially old harp songs. He died several years ago and is buried at Wesleys Chapel in the plot with his wife and some of his children.21

  8. [S2150] Wyatt M. Nichols Sr.; The Nichols Book: Some Early Nichols Families in America, Their Origins and Histories; Cleveland, Ohio; Block Printing Company, 1962; page 69.

Minnie Cox Slaton, oldest child of George and Loretta Cox, was born in
Jefferson County, Tenn., in 1888. She like many other children on the farm,
went to school and did the chores, and as the oldest child, usually had to look after
the young ones. She is a typical Nichols in stature and character, small and petite,
red hair and beautiful eyes, and a beautiful singer. She is perhaps one of the
few living today in that area that can still sing old Harp Music, which was almost
a lost art, even when I was a child. I can remember in my young days it was
always so nice to visit them and spend a week or so hearing her beautiful voice
in song along with my aunt, especially in the early morning when the aroma
of the coffee and the frying of ham meat was so pleasant I always get a kick out of
Minnie saying just about every time she sees me. "Oh, yes, I used to carry you
around on my hip when you were a baby and spank you good for crying.” She is
a wonderful woman, always ready for a good talk, or a good laugh, and one of
the most entertaining and friendly people you would ever meet. She married
Porter Slaton, who resided in Jefferson County. His father was in the Union Army of
the Civil War. Porter who was a fine man and loved farming, especially liked to
grow wheat. He, about ever since I can remember, had threshing machine outfits
and also had a saw mill and a good farm. He was a fine Christian man, a solid
Republican and loved to talk politics with his friends. He died in 1954 and is
buried in the old cemetery, Mount Zion. This cemetery is just about two miles
west of Dandridge on the Knoxville Road, setting just off the new road. Ask any
of the old settlers at Dandridge just where it is. Minnie and Porter had eight
children, namely, Eula Mae, Alma G., Alger F., Eunice B., Ralph P., Conard,
    Loretta and William E.

Eula the oldest daughter of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Haskel
Bolden. They had two boys, Dennis and Kenneth. Eula and her husband went to
New Castle, Indiana shortly after they were married. Their two sons were born in
Indiana. Dennis, the oldest son is married and has two children named Dane
and Dennis. Dennis married Isabelle Sarrell of North Carolina. Eula and her
husband Haskel were divorced and several years after her divorce she married
James Burchett from Albany, Ky. She and her husband and her two sons and
families reside in or near New Castle, Indiana.

Alma, second child of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, married Orville Ailey
from over around the Muddy Creek Valley. He is a great guy and I like him.
It was amusing when I told about the incident at one of our reunions what
happened to my brother Ralph. He was teaching school in this area, and a group
of folks were going to scalp him because he had whipped one of their daughters.
I have told of this incident in comments on my brother and will just say here that
Orville Ailey is a close relative of those that were about to scalp my brother. I
laughingly say I want no part of him because he belongs to the scalping group and
he gets a big kick out of it. Alma and Orville's two children's names are Robert
Earl and Denver E. The oldest boy, Robert, married Polly Ann Seals of Rocky
Valley, Tenn. They have one child. His name is Joseph Michael. Denver E.
married Christine Richards from North Carolina. They have no children at
    this writing.

Alger, third son of Porter and Minnie Cox Slaton, is a fine farmer and good
businessman. He has followed in his father's footsteps remarkably well. He is one
of the fine sons of Minnie and Porter and perhaps a little bit my favorite from the
standpoint I have been around him more than the other children and also

  14. [S1985] Bryan, Jerry: research log: search for census records in 1910 for George Jackson Cox family, 27 November 2015.

Research log by Jerry Bryan re: 1910 census for the family of George Jackson Cox.
    Log filed 11/27/2015

Extensive searching of census records has not turned up any record of the family in Jefferson County or any surrounding county. The only children still at home would have been Ruby, Eunice, and Robert. Eunice died on 3 Nov 1910, but she should have been enumerated in the 1910 census if the family was enumerated. I have searched many of the census pages line by line. I have also searched by the names of George and his wife Rett, and by the name of each of the children. I have searched by surname and age only, by first name and age only, and by first and last name. I have searched many spelling variations and I have used wildcards. The one thing I haven't done yet is to search tax records to confirm that they were living in Jefferson County. But my searches should have found them even if they were living somewhere else.

    Jerry Bryan, self interview, 06/29/2024.

The following is based on conversations with George Cox's grandchildren at the 2000 Cox reunion in Dandridge, Tennessee. George Cox was a farmer. Several of his grandchildren reported their Grandpa Cox was very distant and aloof, and that they were a little afraid of him. He never said anything. With one exception he never sang, but when he was younger he had a beautiful tenor voice and had taught singing. The one exception is that he sometimes sang in his sleep. Grandma and Grandpa Cox had a wooden bench on their front porch, and Grandpa would lay his hat on the arm of the bench as a pillow so he could take a nap.

was built across the French Broad River all of the bodies had to be moved from that cemetery because water covered it and the Federal Government made a new cemetery at a place called Hills Chapel. This cemetery is on the Dandridge-Chestnut Hill highway about half way between the places. Her second husband, John Cox, is also buried there.

    LORETTA NICHOLS COX

Loretta Nichols, oldest child of John and Martha Reneau Nichols, was born in Sevierville, Tenn., 1871. She like many other Nichols women folk was small, petite and very beautiful.

When she was two or three years old her mother took her and the rest of the family to Missouri where, John, her father was employed. It seems as though the climate proved very unhealthy for the family particularly Loretta and her mother, as they became seriously ill while there. Martha, her mother, later brought Loretta and my father Wyatt who was just a baby back to Tennessee. John, her father, stayed on in Missouri at his work. Loretta grew up and attended school in Jefferson County, Tennessee in what is known as Muddy Creek Valley. She marrieed George Cox of Green (sic) County, Tennessee and they later moved back to Jefferson County, Tenn.

Nine children were born to this union, namely, Minnie, Thursa, John, Martha, Ethel, Wyatt, Ruby, Eunice and Robert. I wish to comment briefly on some of the children that died when they were small. Thursa died when a baby and is buried at the New Hill Cemetery located about one-half way between Dandridge and Chestnut Hill. [The cemetery referred to as the New Hill Cemetery by Wyatt Nichols was more commonly called the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Thursa was later reinterred at Wesleys Chapel United Methodist Church because the building of Douglas Dam flooded the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.] Martha and Wyatt both died when they were small and are buried at Wesleys Chapel. This cemetery is located near Piedmont, Tenn on the old Knoxville-Dandridge Highway. Eunice died when she was eight or nine years old. I just want to say something about this sweet little thing as I remember her so well. She had the nicest disposition of any child I have ever known, and I like to remember her sandy reddish hair, laughing and jabbering with me when I would visit their home. She is also buried at Wesleys Chapel. As to the rest of the children, you will find them farther along in this book.

Just one last word about my Aunt Loretta. I loved to visit her and Uncle George and spent many a happy hour at their home when I was a child. Loretta died several years ago and is buried at Wesleys Chapel.

George Cox, husband of Loretta Nichols Cox, born in Green (sic) County, Tenn., in the 1860’s. He spent all of his life farming in either Green County or Jefferson County, Tenn.

In writing about my Uncle George Cox, I must say he was my favorite Uncle. He was a very mild natured and fine dispositioned and loved to tell a sly joke for the benefit of those around him. One of bis greatest sports was squirrel hunting. I can remember well seeing him tamper his shot and powder in his muzzle loading shotgun with a ramrod. He used to kid his neighbors about their modern guns as shooting a squirrel out of the highest tree. He usually won. This old muzzle loading gun was a prize possession of his as it had belonged to his uncle who was killed fighting in the Union Army during the Civil War.

He was a fine singer, especially old harp songs. He died several year ago and is buried at Wesleys Chapel in the plot with his wife and some of his children.

Birth27 May 1871; Jefferson County, Tennessee. Her birth date is given as 27 May 1872 in Hazel Cox's family history, but there is much other evidence that she was born in 1871. Some sources list her birth place as Sevierville, Sevier County, Tennessee. Her father was from Sevierville. But her father and mother were married in Jefferson County, and her death certificate says that she was born in Jefferson County. She went by her middle name of Loretta, and she was known both as Retta and as Rett. Her nieces and nephews called her Aunt Rett.2,3

-----
Information from William Jackson Bryan: It is not known for a fact, but it has been reported that they were married on horse back. It is certainly possible, due to circuit riding preachers.
-----
Information from Robert Elmer Bryan: The age of 12 when she was married is correct, not a typographical error. The fact that she was married at such an early age is a part of family tradition. She still played with dolls after she was married, and her mother had to make her stop doing it.5

The bondsman Lawson Alexander (Alex) Cox was George's uncle as a Cox because Alex was the half brother of George's father John Tivis Cox. Lawson Alexander (Alex) Cox was George's first cousin as a Pierce because Alex's mother Mary Marinda (Marinda) Pierce was the sister of George's mother Nancy Ann Pierce. Loretta's first name was spelled as Clarissa in family records but was spelled as Clarsa by the court clerk.6

NarrativeThe following is from conversations with Rett Nichols' grandchildren, recorded at the Cox reunion in Dandridge in 2000 by Jerry Bryan.

Rett's grandchildren reported that they particularly enjoyed going to Grandma Cox's house. She was very positive with all her grandchildren, giving each one of them praise and positive feedback. She was very organized and believed in "a place for everything and everything in its place". She instilled this ethic in her grandchildren.19
Narrative
The following is from The Nichols Book by Wyatt Nichols, page 68. Loretta was known to Wyatt Nichols as Aunt Loretta or Aunt Rett.
-----
Loretta Nichols, oldest child of John and Martha Reneau Nichols, was born in Sevierville, Tennessee 1871. She like many other Nichols women folk was small, petite and very beautiful.
-----
When she was two or three years old her mother took her and the rest of the family to Missouri where, John, her father was employed. She married George Cox of Greene County, Tennessee and they later moved back to Jefferson County, Tennessee.
-----
Nine children were born to this union, namely, Minnie, Thursa, John, Martha, Ethel, Wyatt, Ruby, Eunice and Robert.
-----
Just one last word about my Aunt Loretta. I loved to visit her and Uncle George and spent many a happy hour at their home when I was a child. Loretta died several years ago and is buried at Wesleys Chapel.20

The following is based on conversations with Rett Cox's grandchildren at the 2000 Cox reunion in Dandridge, Tennessee. Rett's grandchildren reported that they particularly enjoyed going to Grandma Cox's house. She was very positive with all her grandchildren, giving each one of them praise and positive feedback. She was very organized and believed in "a place for everything and everything in its place". She instilled this ethic in her grandchildren.

was built across the French Broad River all of the bodies had to be moved from that cemetery because water covered it and the Federal Government made a new cemetery at a place called Hills Chapel.
