William Cross age 39 was the son of Brittain Cross and Mary Parks.  Jane (Jenny) Black age 31 was the daughter of Joseph Black Jr. and Ruby Catherine Henry.  William's brother Alfred married Jenny's sister Elizabeth.

The best I can tell, I am not related to this Cross family in any simple way. Brittain Cross is often claimed to have been the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy. But I have found no evidence to support this claim and there is evidence that makes this claim unlikely. If Brittain Cross and William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy actually were related, it is more likely that they were something like first cousins once removed or even second cousins once removed than that they were son and father.

Dicy Black age 46 was the daughter of Joseph Black and Ruby Catherine (Catherine) Henry.

            Joel M. 4/12 m w TN

Chesley J. Scarbrough age 26 and Sarah Yarnell age 28 were married 21 Jan 1847 in Knox County, Tennessee.  There were many other Yarnell marriages in the same general time frame in Knox County.  It would appear that Sarah's family was from Knox County, Chesley's family was from Anderson County, they were married in Knox County, and they lived in Anderson County after they were married.

Robert Nester and Sarah Yarnell were married 6 Aug 1840 in Knox County, Tennessee.  Sarah's marriage to Chesley J. Scarbrough lists her name as Sarah Nester.

Chesley J. Scarbrough married second my second great grandmother Vesta Clay England in 1885.  It was also Vesta's second marriage.  She married first my second great grandfather William Cole.  She is remembered in the family either as Grandma Vestie or as Grandma Scarbrough, rather than as Grandma Cole.

The 6 year old child was Jemima Nester, daughter of Sarah Yarnell and her first husband Robert Nester.  However, the 1850 census shows Jemima's surname as Scarbrough.  The two year old child was James A. (Alec) Scarbrough.

A transcription at the Knoxville Public Library erroneously shows the six year old child as James E., so that there are two James E. Scarbroughs in the transcription, a six year old and a two year old.  The correct data above is from the microfilm.

Chesley and Sarah were Wallace T. Smith's great grandparents.  Wallace's grandfather, Robert H. Scarbrough who married Martha Jane (Jenny) Peters, was not born until 1855, five years after this census.

Rebecca Peters was the daughter of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.  In 1850, she was the widow of Michael Clardy.  Her brother Tobias Peters Jr. was living next door in dwelling number 28.

One might suspect that Betsy J. Farmer was the sister of Henry Farmer who was living next door in dwelling number 26.  But I do not know why Betsy might have been living with the Clardy family.

Tobias Peters Jr. was the son of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.  Louisa Henderson was the daughter of William Henderson and Judith Martin.  Tobias and Louisa were married 4 Oct 1838 in Anderson County.

  • I cannot find any record for William Henry Harrison Peters age 11 after 1850, neither marriage, census, nor death.
  • John Farmer Conner Peters age 9 later married Nancy Jane Shinlever.
  • James Scarbro (Jim) Peters age 7 later married Martha Ann Martin.
  • Elizabeth Jane Peters age 4 later married William Wiley Shinlever.  William Wiley Shinlever and Nancy Jane Shinlever were brother and sister, so the children of John Farmer Conner Peters were double first cousins of the children of Elizabeth Jane Peters.
  • Judith Ann Peters age 2 later married Richard Michael (Michael) May.  Michael was the son of James Madison (Madison) May and the grandson of Michael May Sr.  Michael May Sr. was the brother of my fourth great grandmother Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May.

Henry Clark (Clark) Peters age 27 was probably the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  I have not been able to eliminate completely the possibility that Clark was instead the son of Thomas's brother Henry Peters Jr. and Henry's wife Jane England.

Perlina Ann Shilling age 22 was the daughter of Buford Shilling and Ann Hayes.  The marriage record was H. C. Peters to Perolina Shelton, Apr. 10, 1848 by Thomas Hale, J.P. (Apr. 13, 1848).  However, the more common (and probably more correct) spelling is Perlina A. Shilling.

I believe that Perlina was born in Virginia rather than Tennessee.  She is reported by Wallace T. Smith to have been 1/2 Indian (her mother was a Cherokee).  Other sources suggest that Perlina was 1/4 Cherokee, and that it was Ann Hayes who was 1/2 Cherokee.

Clark Peters is listed as the son of Thomas Peters by some researchers and as the son of Henry Peters Jr. by others.  Either way, he was a grandson of Henry Peters Sr.  He is listed as a son of Henry Peters Jr. by Wallace T. Smith, and Clark Peters is Wallace's line.

Henry Peters Jr. was the son of my fifth great grandparents Henry Peters Sr. and Mary Wiatte.  As such, Henry Jr. was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Thomas Peters.

Jane England probably belongs to one of my England families, but I can't yet figure out who she was.

Mary Jane Peters born 1827 was no longer living with the family in 1850, and probably had already married.  Francis was Francis Asbury Peters, born 1831.

I have three Peters lines.  'So far, it appears that all three of them lead back to Thomas Peters.  However, I cannot yet 100% rule out the possibility that one of my three Peters third great grandparents was actually a child of Henry Jr. rather than being a child of Thomas.

Given that this family was living next to so many Peters families, I wonder if Mary J. was Mary J. Peters. If so, she would probably be a granddaughter of Henry Peters Sr.  I have found a marriage for A.L. Davidson and Sarah Ann Peters on 18 Jan 1848, but I have not found a marriage for William C. Davidson and Mary J. Peters.  So this will have to remain idle speculation for now.

Henry Peters Sr. agd 81 was my fifth great grandfather.  Milly age 55 and Katherine age 49 were apparently two of his daughters who never married.  One wonders if they might have been widowed daughters-in-law or something similar, but their having been unmarried daughters seems more likely.

The fact of Milly being born in Virginia in 1795 and Katherine being born in Tennessee in 1801 is consistent with the family moving from Virginia to Tennessee in 1797.

Henry's wife Mary Wiatte died prior to 1830, and is therefore not enumerated in any extant census.

Alfred Carter Cross age 38 and Zipporah Peters age 38 were my third great grandparents.  Hulda Asberine (Asberine) Cross age 4 was my second great grandmother.  She married her second cousin John H. Peters and they were the parents of my great grandfather Alva Edward Peters.

Zipporah Peters was the daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England from dwelling number 150 next door.

Alfred Carter Cross was the son of William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy and William's wife whose name probably was Mary.

There were two Alfred Crosses in Anderson County at the same time, both about the same age.  The other Alfred Cross married Elizabeth Black and was the son of Brittain Cross.  Conventional wisdom is that Brittain Cross was the son of William Cross the drummer boy, so that the two Alfred Crosses were uncle and nephew.  But I think that there is considerable reason to doubt that Brittain was William's son.  I think William and Brittain were related, but that the relationship was more distant than father and son.

The unnamed twins age 1/12 were Josephine (Josie) Cross and Arvazine Cross.

Jacob died in the Civil War.  Dicy remarried and the family moved back to Tennessee.  Margaret Ann England married my second great grandfather Alexander L. Williamson in 1874 in Monroe County, Tennessee.

Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon was the son of Andrew Shannon and Elizabeth.  As such, he was the brother of Preston William Shannon, who played a prominent role in a number of legal documents associated with my Peters family.  Wright's wife was Sidney Viles (or possibly Voyls).

Charlotte was presumably the daughter of Wright and Sidney, even though Wright and Sidney were not married until 1849.  However, therein lies a mystery.

Charlotte used Shannon as her surname, and she married Thomas J. (Tom) Peters in 1873.  Tom was the brother of two of my third great grandmothers, Jane Peters and also Zipporah Peters.

Charlotte and Tom had a son named William Wright Peters.  The death certificate of William Wright Peters says that his parents were Tom Peters and Lollie Voyls.  Lollie is a nickname for Charlotte.  So I wonder if Charlotte Shannon was born Charlotte Viles/Voyls?

There are at least two ways that could have happened.  One way was that Charlotte might have been born out of wedlock and might therefore have taken her mother's maiden name of Viles/Voyls.  In this case, Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon might or might not have been Charlotte's birth father.  The other way is that Sidney might have married first a Mr. Viles/Voyls who was Charlotte's birth father, and then Sidney married Pleasant Wright (Wright) Shannon in 1849.

This is Preston W. Shannon and his first wife Elizabeth Wiatt.  He married second Elizabeth's sister Adeline, and married third Susan Emily Peters, daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.  Susan Emily Peters in turn married first Alva A. Oliver and married second Preston W. Shannon.

I wonder if the Wiatt sisters who married Preston W. Shannon might have been related to my fifth great grandmother Mary Wiatt who married Henry Peters Sr.  So far, the Wiatt family is a mystery to me.

Preston W. Shannon was mentioned or was a signatory to a number of documents associated with the Peters and Scarbrough families.  Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England were my fourth great grandparents and Mary J. Peters' sisters Zipporah and Jane were my third great grandmothers.

Of more significance, my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole age 10 was living with Preston W. Shannon and Susan Emily Peters in the 1880 census.  Sallie Jane Cole was the granddaughter of Jane Peters.  This was the first evidence I found suggesting that Jane Peters was the sister of Susan Emily Peters, and therefore suggesting that Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England were Jane's parents.  I have since found additional evidence confirming that Jane was the daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.

Alva A. Oliver was the grandfather of Alva Scarbrough.  Alva A. Oliver was married to Mary Emily Peters who was the grandaunt of Alva Edward Peters who married Sallie Jane ColeAlva Edward Peters and Alva Scarbrough were second cousins.  I believe that both Alva Edward Peters and Alva Scarbrough were named for Alva A. Oliver.

Priestly King (King) Scarbrough was the son of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough Sr. and Elizabeth Nunely.  King's wife was Nancy Temple Smith.

King Scarbrough and Nancy Smith were the parents of Tolbert Ross (Ross) Scarbrough who was born in 1864.  Uncle Ross later married Cordelia Rene (Cordie) Cole.  Aunt Cordie was the sister of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole.  Aunt Cordie's middle name was pronounced "Reen".

I do not know who Isabella Horton was, but it would be useful to find out.  I believe Isabella was the sister of Nancy C. Horton who was living in the home of Adison A. Leath and his wife Nancy Ann Cross.  Nancy Ann Cross was the daughter of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.

I believe there was some connection either between the Cross family or the Leath family on the one hand, and the Horton family on the other hand.

Vesta Clay England age 10 was my second great grandmother who married my second great grandfather William Cole.  They were the parents of my great grandmother Sallie Jane Cole.

John England and Jane Peters were my third great grandparents.  John England was the son of Titus England and ElizabethJane Peters was the daughter of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England.

For a long time I thought Jane was the daughter of John Peters and Sallie Clay.  However, I no longer believe that to be the case.  The Clay family name must have been passed down to Vesta Clay England some other way.  There were definitely Peters/Clay connections back in Virginia, and the Peters/Clay connection probably helps point to the ancestors of Tobias Peters Sr. and Henry Peters Sr.

John England and Jane Peters were married 23 May 1839 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Vesta's tombstone says that she was born in 1841, but the marriage date of her parents and her age in the 1850 census suggest that she was really born in 1840.  In addition, there was a female age 00-04 in the home in the 1840 census, again suggesting that Vesta was born in 1840.

Elizabeth age 55 was my fourth great grandmother.  In 1850, she was the widow of my fourth great grandfather Titus EnglandTitus was the son of John England and Vesta Zipporah (Zipporah) Choate.

I do not know Elizabeth's surname.  She is sometimes said to have been Elizabeth Stewart, but Elizabeth Stewart married a different Titus England.  Elizabeth Stewart was born about 1775 and was enumerated in 1850 in Benton County, Missouri as the widow of the other Titus.

The two Tituses were related, but were not of the same generation.  I have not worked out the exact relationship between the two Tituses, but they were probably uncle and nephew, or possibly first cousins once removed.  Many researchers have the two Tituses and the two Elizabeths mixed up.

My Titus and Elizabeth were the parents of William England from house number 181 and the parents of my third great grandfather John England from house number 180.

William Scarbrough was the son of David Scarbrough and Elizabeth Anderson.

James Wiatt was born about 1784 and died 23 Jan 1865 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Margaret Scarbrough was born about 1784 in Greenbrier County, Virginia and died 27 Jan 1872 in Roane County, Tennessee.  Margaret Scarbrough was the daughter of David Scarbrough and Elizabeth Anderson.  James Wiatt and Margaret Scarbrough were the parents of Elizabeth Wiatt who was the first wife of Preston W. Adison A. Leath was the son of Willis Leath and Ruth (Ruthy) Keith.  Nancy Ann Cross was the daughter of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War Drummer boy.  As such, she was the sister of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

William F. Leath age 13, Ruthy J. Leath age 9, and Willis A. Leath age 8 were clearly named for a grandparent.  This leads me to suspect that Mary Ann Leath age 12 was also named for a grandparent, and that therefore William Cross's first wife was named Mary.

It is not known who Nancy C. Horton was, but she bears further investigation.  There was apparently some connection between either the Cross family or the Leath family on the one hand, and the Horton family on the other hand.  I would suspect that Nancy C. Horton was some sort of niece or cousin either of Adison A. Leath or of Nancy Ann Cross.

In 1850 this family was living on 174 acres they had inherited from my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  This census entry valued the land at $300.

The land was involved in an 1888 lawsuit that provides a great deal of insight into Cross family relationships.  The land was located in a gap in Pine Ridge and extended north from the gap along the East Fork of Poplar Creek.  In modern day times, the land could be described as being where Scarbrough Road goes through the gap in the ridge and intersects with Illinois Avenue, just north of the east portal of the Y-12 plant.  For the most part, the creek itself is now carried in culverts under parking lots at strip malls, restaurants, and grocery stores.  Illinois Avenue follows the route of the creek, even though the creek itself is no longer very visible in its culverts.

Elizabeth Cross age 45 probated the will of William Cross in 1845.  I don't know exactly how she was related to William.  The possibilities seem to be that she was a daughter who never married, that she was a second wife who was much younger than William was, or that she was a widowed daughter-in-law.  It seems most likely that she was a daughter who never married.

Mary Cross age 37 was an heir of William Cross.  I don't know exactly how she was related to William.  The possibilities seem to be that she was a daughter who never married, that she was a much younger second wife, or that she was a widowed daughter-in-law.  It seems most likely that she was a daughter who never married.

I have listed Amanda Melvina Cross age 28 as the daughter of William Cross.  Amanda Melvina was too old to have been the daughter of Mary.  I suppose she could have been the daughter of Elizabeth.  But it seems more likely that she was the daughter of William.  She apparently died before the 1888 lawsuit and therefore was not mentioned in the lawsuit.  But she did pay taxes on William Cross's land in her later years.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Emilia Jane (Jane) Cross age 18 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 37 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Jane was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.

According to the 1888 lawsuit, Safrona C. (Froney) Cross age 7 was an heir of Polly Cross (Mary age 37 from this census entry).  If Mary was a daughter of William Cross and if she never married, then her heir Froney was probably a daughter who was born out of wedlock.  Froney married a William Scarbrough in 1877 in Morgan County.  This particular William Scarbrough was the son of Albert Allen Scarbrough and Mary Ervin, and appears not to have been a member of the Scarbrough family from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

John H. Cross age 8 wasn't mentioned in the 1888 lawsuit.  He apparently died between 1860 and 1870, which was many years before the lawsuit.  Because Jane age 18 and Froney age 7 were Mary's children, it seems likely that John H. probably also was Mary's child.

In 1860 Willis Leath was living with Elizabeth Peters and John Peters.  Also, Willis's son Adison Leath married Nancy Cross about 1836.  Nancy was the daughter of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  At one point, Willis Leath paid taxes on his interest in some of William Cross's land, although it is not clear how Willis obtained that interest.  Nancy Cross Leath was a participant in an 1888 Anderson County lawsuit over some of William Cross's land.

Scarbrough was the son of Jonathan Lupton Scarbrough Sr. and the brother of Priestly King (King) Scarbrough who was Ida Cole's father-in-law.  But I am still not quite sure why E.C. Scarbrough was so close to my Peters family.

Gabriel Stanifer (Lumm) Hackworth age 8 was the grandfather of Aunt Jo Peters.  Anne Jo (Jo) Hackworth married William Birchel (Birchel) Peters.  Uncle Birchel was the brother of my grandfather Ernest Lester (Lester) Peters Sr.

Larkin Hackworth was the son of Gabriel Hackworth and Mary Bonham.  So Lumm Hackworth was named for his grandfather Gabriel Hackworth.

The first three children were the children of Larkin Hackworth and his first wife Elizabeth Leath.  That Larkin Hackworth's first wife was Elizabeth Leath is proven in the will of Willis Leath.  Elizabeth Leath was the daughter of Willis Leath and Rutha (Ruthy) Keith.  So Rutha Ann Hackworth was named for her grandmother Ruthy Keith.

Francis Hackworth was the son of Larkin Hackworth and his second wife Rachel Smith, who were married 12 Oct 1847 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  My best guess is that Elizabeth Leath died about 1846.

Jesse C. Cross was the son of my fourth great grandfather William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  As such, Jesse was the brother of my third great grandfather Alfred Carter Cross.

Amelia (Milly) England was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.  As such, Millie was the sister of my fourth great grandfather Titus England and also the sister of my fourth great grandmother Sarah (Sallie) England.

Milly Cross signed an affidavit on 17 Feb 1872 as a part of Thomas Peters pension application for the War of 1812.  The affidavit stated that she had attended the wedding of Thomas Peters and Sarah (Sallie) England in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1812.

Permina Emaline McCart was the daughter of Robert McCart Jr. and Hannah, and the granddaughter of Robert McCart Sr. and Hannah Peters.  She married Wiley England on 25 Mar 1849 in Anderson County, Tennessee.

Wiley England is a little more problematic.  He was probably the son of my fourth great grandparents Titus England and Elizabeth, and the grandson of John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate.

Emilia Bray and Archelaus Huckaby were married on 22 Sep 1842 in Anderson County.  So despite the age differential, they were wife and husband.

Archelaus was listed in the settlement of my fourth great grandmother Jane, wife of John Bray.  Hence, it appears that Emilia Bray was an heir of Jane, probably a daughter.  Therefore, Emilia Bray was probably the sister of my third great grandfather Edward Payne Bray.

Solomon Disney and Sarah were married prior the establishment of the Anderson County marriage book, and there is no known record of their marriage.  They were evidently married in the early 1820's.

William C. Tunnell age 18 married Fanny Cox on 25 Sep 1861.  Fanny Cox married second G. B. R. Lea on 13 Oct 1870.  I originally had an interest in the family because I thought perhaps Fanny Cox married third William England on 14 Jul 1875.  I've been trying unsuccessfully to figure out which William England she married.  However, I have since proved that Fanny Cox did not marry a third time, and hence did not marry William England.  So William England and Fanney Lee remain a mystery.

Samuel Tunnell was the son of Col. William Tunnell III and Elizabeth Worthington.  Sarah C. McKamey was the daughter of John McKamey and Mary (Polly).

Alfred Cross was the son of Brittain Cross and Mary (Polly) Parks.  Elizabeth (Betty) Black was the daughter of Joseph Black Jr. and Ruby Catherine (Catherine) Henry.

There were two Alfred Crosses in Anderson County at the same time, both about the same age.  I am descended from Alfred Carter Cross, son of William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  This is the "other" Alfred Cross, the one who was not my Alfred Carter Cross.  The two Alfred Crosses were almost certainly related, but exactly how they were related is not known.  Which is to say, the parents of Brittain Cross are not known.  Some researchers list Brittain as the son of William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy.  If this were true, then the two Alfred Crosses would have been uncle and nephew.  But there are strong reasons to believe that Brittain was not the son of William the drummer.

Although this Alfred Cross listed his occupation as "farmer", he was also a lawyer and he served for a while as sheriff of Anderson County.

Mary is Mary McKamey.  They were married 21 May 1840 in Anderson County.  I wonder if Mary is related to Robert McKamey in dwelling number 569 (see below).

My interest in this family is Isabella England age 24 and Barsheba England age 18.  I suspect that they were sisters.  I also suspect that both of them might have been sisters of Frederick England from dwelling number 562 (see above).

Isabella England and Robert McKamey age 25 were married 17 May 1843 in Anderson County, TN.  Frederick England and Isabella England were born in North Carolina and Barsheba England was born in TN.  If these people are siblings, it would suggest that the family moved from North Carolina to TN between 1826 and 1832.

A Joseph England from Burke County, North Carolina lived in North Carolina until about 1827 and applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Anderson County, Tennessee in 1833.  Frederick, Isabella, and Barsheba are all of an age to have been grandchildren of Joseph.  Joseph cannot be located directly in the 1830 census of Anderson County.  However, there were two England men named Alfred England and William England living next door to each other in 1830 who appear to have been Joseph's sons.  It seems likely that Alfred and/or William were the father(s) of Frederick, Isabella, and Barsheba.  For example, Alfred could have been the father of all three, William could have been the father of all three, or Alfred could have been the father of one or two of them with William having been the father of the rest.  In the latter case, Frederick, Isabella, and Barsheba could have had cousin relationships rather than all having been siblings.

This was Elisah Long and his wife Elizabeth Landrum.  Elizabeth's parents were living in the home as well.

My interest in the family is Susan Elizabeth Long age 5 who later married Thomas Harvey Messamore.  Thomas Harvey Messamore was the son of James Messamore and Sarah (Sary) Heath.  As such, Thomas was the nephew of my third great grandmother Anna F. Messamore.

Some transcriptions list George's name as George Peters.  As a result, I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how he might fit into the Peters family.  But a careful investigation of the microfilm indicates his name was almost certainly George Petree.  His wife was Syntha Turner in any case.

Tate Milton 38 m w doctor $2500 TN

There is no direct connection that I know of between Milton Tate and any of my families.  I make note of this census entry because Milton was mentioned in the settlement of my fourth great grandmother Jane, wife of John Bray.  Milton received $13.00 in the settlement.  I would suspect that he had rendered medical care to Jane prior to her death, and that the $13.00 was in payment for said medical care.

Also, I make note of the fact that Jane's son Joseph H. Bray was living nearby in dwelling number 862 (see above).

I have not a clue who this Charles England was.  I would only comment that a free black person was unusual in Anderson County in 1850.

I am including this family only because Paul Frost appears to be the son of Joshua Frost and Anna, and because Charles England is living with Joshua Frost.
