Newspaper ArticleDaughter of Knox doctor and her husband killed in collision
The daughter of a prominent Knoxville doctor and her husband have been killed in a traffic accident while vacationing in Florida, authorities said. Lisa G. Smith, 26, and Norman Tom Smith, 30, of Old Clinton Pike were killed Sunday in Walton County, about one mile from Destin. They were traveling in a 1989 Mazda when it was struck head-on by a 1984 Mercury Cougar, according to Walton County Sheriff's Department dispatcher Emory Ellis. Ellis said the Cougar, which was registered to Athens, Ala., man but was being driven by a Panama City man, lost control on Highway 98 when a car ahead of it slowed to stop. The Cougar went airborne and landed in the front seat of the Smiths' car. A Baton Rouge, La., couple traveling in the Smiths' car were admitted to a local hospital and are in serious condition. The driver and occupants of the Cougar also were admitted to hospitals. Alcohol was involved in the accident and charges are pending against the driver of the Cougar, authorities said. Lisa Smith is the daughter of Dr. I Ray King, who is the physician caring for seven fertilized human eggs involved in a Blount County divorce case. The divorced couple are disputing the fate of the eggs -- the wife wishes to preserve and use the eggs; the husband does not desire to become a father. The case remains in the courts. King, who is affiliated with both St. Mary's Medical Center and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, said his daughter had worked in his office until six weeks ago. She then moved to the Fort Sanders administrative offices.
